"Let’s go check the party venue," Anne said. Audrey grinned from ear to ear, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I am so excited. Let’s go." The afternoon sun slanted through the tall glass doors as Anne and Audrey stepped into the sprawling party venue. Staff members in black T-shirts embroidered with the event company’s logo moved with purpose — some arranging centerpieces, others stringing fairy lights along the ceiling beams. The scent of fresh lilies and orchids mingled with the faint smell of paint and polish as finishing touches were made. Rolls of satin fabric trailed across the polished floor, and crates filled with champagne flutes were being carefully unpacked near the bar. Anne’s eyes scanned the room as she stepped in. The stage was nearly complete, and the flower wall backdrop looked lush and picture-perfect. But several things were still undone — an open crate of candles sat beside the main arch, a few tablecloths were yet to be laid out, and the lighting team was busy angling spotlights. Audrey leaned in close, eyes wide with wonder. "This place is massive," she whispered, clearly impressed as her gaze wandered in awe across the hall. Anne said nothing. Her gaze drifted to the far side of the hall, where several male staff members were carefully hoisting a large crystal chandelier into place. And just beside them... stood Tania with a woman, who seemed to be the event planner. The woman beside Tania was holding a clipboard, issuing instructions with sharp gestures and a perfectly poised smile. But Anne’s eyes didn’t stray from Tania, who looked like she had walked straight out of a fashion magazine. Dressed in a tailored powder-blue jumpsuit, her hair sleekly tied back in a low ponytail, and a pair of designer sunglasses resting on her head even though they were indoors. Audrey noticed immediately and followed her gaze. "Well," Audrey muttered under her breath, "look who is here. Tania herself." Anne responded coolly, "Of course she is here. It’s her engagement, after all — she is the main attraction." Audrey nudged her with a sly smile. "Don’t be so sure. The party is also about introducing you to everyone. Trust me, you’ll be stealing some of that spotlight." Meanwhile, Tania turned and saw them. "Oh, Anne, it’s you," she drawled with a crafty smile on her face as she walked over to them. "What a pleasant surprise! I didn’t know you were coming. If I had, I would’ve come to pick you up myself." Anne also faked a smile. "That’s very kind of you," she said. "It was a last-minute decision. Augustine asked me to stop by, so I came." "You did the right thing. I was just talking to the event planner. Denis insisted on booking Sarah — she is the best in the city, you know. He wants everything to be absolutely perfect, something unforgettable." Anne nodded, clearly understanding Tania was trying to show how much Denis loved her. But she didn’t flinch. Denis no longer held power over her heart. Now that they were family, she had to endure him. That’s all – nothing else. "That’s nice to hear," Anne replied evenly, then turned to Audrey. "Come on, let’s have a look around." Just as they were about to move, Tania piped up again, trying to keep a grip on the conversation. "Why don’t you speak with Sarah and share your preferences? She’ll want to know what you think." Anne smiled tightly. "Sure." With that, she walked away, holding Audrey’s hand. Tania’s eyes narrowed, a sly smile curving on her lips. She had carefully orchestrated this moment, urging Denis to convince Anne to visit the venue. Though Denis had initially refused, in the end, he still did exactly as she wanted. "This is your first step into my trap, Anne," she whispered under her breath. Taking out her phone, she dialed Denis. "Where are you?" she asked, feigning urgency. "I’m not feeling well. Could you come and get me?" "Where are you now?" Denis asked, concern seeping into his tone. "I stopped by the venue to take a look, but I suddenly felt light-headed and started getting cramps. I’m really worried about the baby." "Tell Sarah. She can take you to the hospital. I’m in the middle of something," Denis responded flatly. "She is busy," Tania replied quickly, her gaze locking on Sarah, who was deep in conversation with Anne. "She is talking to Anne right now. Maybe getting her input on the decoration." There was a moment of silence on Denis’s end. "Anne’s there?" he asked, his tone shifting. "Yes. She came with a friend." Another pause. Then he said, "Alright. I’ll come." The line went dead. Tania stared down at her phone, her sneer deepening. "You refused to come for me at first," she muttered. "But the moment you heard Anne’s name, you jumped. It’s pathetic. She is your cousin’s wife, and you still can’t let her go. But don’t worry—whatever feelings you have left for her won’t survive for long. Soon, you’ll despise her." Masking her irritation with a polished smile, Tania strolled over to where Anne and Sarah stood. "Sarah, make sure the decorations reflect Anne’s preferences," she said sweetly. "We were just discussing that, but—" Sarah began. Anne cut in smoothly, "There is no need for changes. Everything is fine as it is." Taking the cue, Sarah gave a brief nod and stepped away, leaving the two women alone. "I’m glad you came," Tania said, her tone syrupy. "I’ve been managing everything personally. I don’t trust others with the details — not when it’s my engagement party." She emphasized the last words deliberately, aiming to jab Anne. However, Anne remained calm. Offering a composed smile, she said, "The team is doing a good job." "Of course they are," Tania replied quickly. Then, as if remembering something, she pulled out her phone. "Let me show you what Denis sent me last night. He told me to choose whichever one I liked." She angled the screen toward Anne. A dazzling diamond ring sparkled in the photo. "He didn’t want me to settle for anything less than perfect," Tania added, watching Anne closely for any flicker of emotion. "What do you think? Should I go for this one?" Anne barely blinked. "It’s your choice. If you want a bigger and flashier diamond, just tell him. He’ll get it for you." Tania’s smile faltered for a second, her chest tightening with silent annoyance. This wasn’t how she imagined it—Anne was supposed to look hurt, jealous. But instead, she remained unfazed, her indifference infuriating. Swallowing her frustration, Tania forced an even broader smile. "You are absolutely right," Tania said with a smug little smirk. "He can do anything for me. He loves me, you know." She flicked to another image. "Oh, look at this — the gown. Denis hired the best designer for it. Isn’t it stunning?" Anne glanced briefly at the picture: a flowing, pale gold couture gown with elaborate embroidery, delicate crystals stitched into the bodice. Beautiful. Expensive. Excessive. "Looks like a dream," Anne said with a gaping mouth as if stunned. But Tania wasn’t finished. "And," she added with exaggerated nonchalance, "after the engagement, we are heading off for a little pre-wedding honeymoon. Denis insisted. Said he wanted to whisk me away from the chaos of the city before things get hectic. Just us." She tilted her head slightly, eyes sharp with challenge. "So... when are you and Augustine going on your honeymoon?"
