Chapter 20: I’m already married. Denis shut his laptop and glanced at his wristwatch. The hands pointed to half past ten. A frown appeared on his face as he wondered if Anne was still at her desk, working on the report as he had ordered. Curious, he stood and strolled out of his office. As he reached the main floor, his eyes immediately landed on Anne still in her desk, absorbed in her work. ’She is still here.’ Satisfaction curled in his chest. Anne had obeyed him, just like always. No matter how much she fought, no matter how fiercely she resisted, in the end, she followed his words. This was the Anne he preferred—the one who worked diligently, who listened, who submitted to him, not the fiery, rebellious woman who challenged him. He wanted her like this—soft, compliant, within his reach. A quiet chuckle escaped his lips. "Since you’re working so hard, I’ll reward you," he murmured. "Tonight, I’ll make it up to you. I’ll erase all your complaints." He dialed the housekeeper at his villa. "Listen carefully. I’m bringing Anne home tonight. Prepare her favorite dishes. And I want the patio transformed into a romantic setting—candles, flowers, everything should be perfect. Do it fast. We’ll be arriving in an hour." Ending the call, he tucked his phone away, a sense of anticipation filling him. Denis strode toward Anne’s desk, his expression cool and unreadable. "Are you not done yet?" he asked coldly, hiding his real intent. Anne’s head snapped up, her glare sharp. "Don’t worry, Mr. Beaumont. It’s almost done." Denis studied her for a moment, then gave a curt nod. "Alright. Once you finish, give me a call." Without waiting for a response, he pivoted and walked away, the corners of his lips curling ever so slightly. ’You’ll like the surprise I have for you,’ he mused. ’I can’t wait to see you surrender to me.’ Anne finally finished her job. She exhaled slowly and pressed the save button, a sense of accomplishment washing over her. Stretching her arms above her head, she rolled her stiff shoulders and rubbed the back of her neck. Hours of work had left her body aching, but a small, satisfied grin tugged at her lips. The report was finished. Denis’s words from earlier flashed in her mind. She typed a short message: ’It’s done.’ Turning off her laptop, she stood up and headed toward the restroom, unaware that someone was waiting for this exact moment in the shadows. Becca, who had been hiding in shadows, finally found the chance she had been waiting for. Moving swiftly and silently, she approached Anne’s desk. She reached for the laptop and powered it on. Anne had trusted her. Over the years, they had grown close—close enough for Becca to learn her password. With practiced ease, she typed it in, unlocking the screen within seconds. Her eyes gleamed with malice as she navigated to the folder containing the report. ’Goodbye, Anne.’ With one decisive click, she hit the delete button. The file vanished. Becca let out a quiet chuckle, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear as she whispered mockingly, "It’s over. Let’s see how you explain this." Her eyes darted around the empty office, ensuring no one had seen her. Satisfied, she carefully turned off the laptop, closed it as if nothing had happened, and slipped away into the shadows. Moments later, the restroom door creaked open, and Anne emerged, walking back to her desk. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a figure hurrying away. She frowned. ’Becca?’ Anne came to a halt, her brows knitting together in confusion. ’Hadn’t she left already?’ Doubt flickered in her mind. Had she really seen Becca, or was exhaustion playing tricks on her? Shaking her head, she dismissed the thought. "I must be too tired," she murmured. "I need to get out of here first." She smirked. Anne gathered her belongings, stuffing them into her bag before stepping out of the office building. The cool night air greeted her, but before she could take a breath of relief, she came to an abrupt halt. Denis stood in front of her, leaning casually against his sleek Bentley. "I’ve been waiting for you. Get in." He gestured to his car. Anne froze. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. Something about this felt off. Denis let out a small chuckle. "What are you looking at me like that for? It’s late. Let’s go home." "Home?" she echoed. "Which home, Denis? The one where you cheated on me and had sex with Tania?" His features hardened. "Anne..." But she cut him off before he could say another word. "That house is no longer my home," she snapped. "The moment you betrayed me, the moment you disrespected our relationship, that place lost all meaning to me. I’m not going back there." Turning sharply on her heel, she tried to walk past him. Denis grabbed her arm, yanking her back. "I explained you," he said through clenched teeth. "That night—I was drunk. I wasn’t in my right mind, and something happened. It was an accident. Why are you still fighting me on this?" Anne let out a bitter laugh, yanking her arm free with a sharp jerk. She muttered a curse under her breath, which only fueled the fire burning in his eyes. "Don’t ignore me." His hand shot up, fingers clamping around her jaw as he forced her to look at him. She slapped his hand away. "Don’t touch me. You disgust me." A dangerous heat surged through him, the urge to lash out, to hit her nearly overwhelming. But he forced himself to restrain it. He rolled his hand into a fist, trying to calm his raging mind. Anne was angry, and if he wanted her back, he had to play this carefully. Taking a deep breath, he loosened his posture, softening his tone. "I agree that I made mistakes. But I’m willing to make it up to you. Let’s go home. I’ve arranged a surprise for you." Anne let out an exasperated sigh. "Don’t you understand human language, Denis?" she snapped. "I already broke up with you. We are over—finished, done." She waved her hands animatedly. "There is no way we can get back together. You have Tania—the woman carrying your child. And me?"
