Chapter 147: Megan and Lorie’s meeting Anne’s heart thudded uneasily. She sensed it immediately — something wasn’t right. The tension radiating from the butler only deepened her anxiety. "Is... is everything okay?" she asked. "Please, madam." He gestured toward the open car door. "You will understand once you get there." Anne hesitated for a moment longer before finally sliding into the back seat. The butler quickly closed the door behind her and climbed into the passenger seat. Without another word, the driver pulled away from the curb. Anne gripped her bag tightly on her lap, staring out of the tinted windows as the city blurred past. A knot twisted in her stomach. She didn’t know what was waiting for her at the mansion. Across the street, Lorie stood still, her sharp eyes locked on the scene unfolding before her. Quickly raising her phone, she snapped several pictures of Anne getting into the car with the elderly man. Her lip curled in contempt as she muttered under her breath, "How shameless you are. Already clinging to Augustine, and now throwing yourself at an old man for money." Bitter fury burned through her veins. "Because of you," she seethed, nails digging into her palms. "I ended up marrying that bastard, Robert. I lost my job. Got blacklisted from every major firm. You destroyed my career, my life." Lorie’s eyes darkened with venomous hatred. "And I swear — you will pay for it. I’ll make sure of it." Spinning on her heels, she stormed toward a nearby café. She chose a secluded corner table, her whole body taut with anger as she waited for Megan. Minutes later, Megan arrived, her graceful movements commanding attention. She approached Lorie with a cool, assessing gaze. Lorie forced a smile and rose quickly. "Miss Megan," she greeted respectfully, giving a slight bow. "Please, have a seat." Megan slid elegantly into the chair opposite her, her posture poised. "So the rumors were true. You were fired." The smile slipped from Lorie’s face. Her shoulders stiffened, and she dropped heavily back into her seat. "It’s all Anne’s fault," she spat bitterly, her hands curling into tight fists on the table. "She bewitched Mr. Augustine, made him believe lies about me. I was forced to play along, forced to clear her name publicly. I even took the blame to avoid bigger trouble." Her voice cracked as she tried to hold back her rage, but a broken sob escaped. Tears shimmered in her eyes. "But after everything I did, I still lost the job. They dismissed me without mercy," she choked out. "I didn’t even lie. I saw her seducing him with my own eyes. And now she is with an old man. I have proof." With that, she thrust the phone toward Megan, showing her the photo she had just captured outside the café. "Take a look at this." In the picture, Anne stood beside an older man, who looked to be in his fifties, near a sleek, high-end car. "She didn’t even hesitate to throw herself at an old man just for money." Lorie sneered. "She has been selling herself all these years." Megan took the phone and examined the image closely, her lip curling in disdain. "What a disgrace," she muttered. "She has got Augustine eating out of her hand, and now she is running around with some wealthy old guy too. Shameless." From the polished luxury car and the man’s well-groomed appearance, Megan could easily tell he was someone with money and status, but she had no idea he was actually the Beaumont family’s butler. Lorie’s face twisted with bitterness. "My mom and I always wondered how Anne managed to afford my father’s expensive treatments for so many years," she said with scorn. "We suspected she was doing something dirty behind the scenes to get that kind of money." Anger surged through her. "Now it all makes sense," she spat. "She has been sleeping around with rich men to fund it. If Dad ever wakes up and finds out the truth, it’ll kill him from the shame. After everything we did for her — raising her like our own — this is how she repays us." Megan clenched her jaw as the memory of Augustine’s cold rejection resurfaced. She knew, without a doubt, that Anne was the reason. Her father had been eager to see her married to Augustine, but that dream had crumbled the moment Augustine rejected her. The humiliation burned in her chest, and she refused to accept defeat, not to someone like Anne. Forcing a calm, composed smile onto her face, Megan said, "Thank you for showing me this photo. I’ll need your help from now on. Keep a close eye on Anne — follow her, track her movements, and report everything to me. And don’t worry about money. I’ll make sure you are well compensated." Lorie’s eyes lit up instantly, a gleam of hope flickering across her face. "I won’t disappoint you," she said eagerly, practically vibrating with the chance to strike back at Anne. Megan leaned back, a calculating look flashing in her eyes. "Once Anne is exposed, I’ll make sure you get a good job. " Lorie’s face beamed with gratitude, her heart swelling with renewed determination. "Thank you, Miss Megan. Thank you so much," she said, bowing her head slightly. With Megan’s backing, Lorie felt powerful, her mind already envisioning Anne’s downfall. ’Anne, you ruined my life by forcing me into a marriage with Robert, she thought viciously. Now it’s my turn. I’ll drag you into hell with me. Just wait.’ Her fists clenched under the table. This time, Anne wouldn’t escape. Inside the private VIP room of the casino... Augustine’s phone buzzed on the table, catching his immediate attention. He picked it up instantly as he saw the number of the guard he had assigned to shadow Anne, his face darkening as he listened to the report from the other end. "The Beaumont family’s butler came to fetch her. Madam is now at the mansion." The news tightened something cold and sharp inside Augustine’s chest. Without uttering a word, he stood up abruptly, and the tension radiating from him was palpable. Gustave, who had been seated nearby, noticed the change instantly. His instincts kicked in. "What’s wrong?" he asked quickly, his eyes narrowing with concern at the rigid set of Augustine’s shoulders. "I have to go to the mansion," Augustine said tersely, slipping the phone back into his pocket with a clipped motion. "Should I come with you?" Gustave offered, already half-rising from his seat. Augustine shook his head once, sharply. "No. Focus on the tasks I gave you." Without another glance back, Augustine strode out of the room.
