Chapter 37: Vassals’ Master "No need to swear on your lives." The voice from under the helmet sounded genuinely surprised by how serious they were being. Sara thought to herself—big shots sure have a way with words, but damn if it doesn’t feel good to hear it. Then she heard: "I have only one requirement—your daughters need to become my sister’s vassals." "Vassals?" "Your sister’s vassals?" Yolanda and Sara exchanged glances—this sounded sketchy as hell. Vassals were basically followers who belonged to nobles. For a lot of Psionics from nowhere backgrounds, this was actually a pretty sweet deal. Nobles would hook up their vassals with spirit gear, magical potions, and even set them up with high-level folks to lead monster hunting parties. In return, vassals gave their complete loyalty. Usually, nobles were picky as hell when choosing vassals—they had to have killer talent and solid character. Otherwise their investments would go down the toilet. This golden opportunity had just dropped into the laps of their two daughters who’d barely awakened their powers. Especially since it was coming from the stranger who’d just saved their asses. This made both women seriously suspicious of traps or twisted motives, like... "Vassals! Vassals! Hell yeah, me and my sister are gonna be vassals!" The twins, without all those complicated adult worries, took advantage of the women’s distraction to break free and start celebrating. "Since you’ve agreed, stay close behind the black carriage and don’t leave the guards’ protection zone." "Wait..." Yolanda and Sara panicked—they never expected him to just take that as a yes. Just as they were about to speak up, the curtain had already snapped shut—no chance to back out now. Creaking sounds filled the air as the Purple Thornblade Skeleton Guards behind the black carriage stepped back several paces. They left space for the four women, with a crystal-clear vibe of ’follow or die.’ Both women sighed, feeling completely powerless against whatever fate had in store. They could only let the twins drag them along behind the black carriage. Time to hit the road again... At the back of the formation, the twins were buzzing with excitement as they studied the Purple Thornblade Skeleton Guards, chattering nonstop. Yolanda and Sara started their usual silent conversation through meaningful looks: "Are we really following this complete stranger?" "What choice do we have? We can’t take them in a fight..." "Isn’t there any way out of this?" Yolanda’s eyes were actually getting watery. Sara quickly dabbed them dry, her gaze rock-solid: "There is. Just wait for me to figure it out." "Okay!" Yolanda put on her gentle smile again, knowing her best friend would always come through, just like back in the day... The weak sun set and the blood moon rose, making the Withered Lands’ monster packs even more vicious. Normally, Psionics wouldn’t spend nights in Dark Mist territories—they’d usually take turns keeping watch unless they found a really secure spot. But Carlos chose to camp out in the open like he owned the place. He pitched a tent and got a bonfire going. He had one Purple Thornblade Skeleton Guard rotating a fat sheep on a spit while two others stood guard behind him. He spread out nine more Purple Thornblade Skeleton Guards around the perimeter to handle any monsters that got too close. The four women sat on the opposite side of the bonfire, pulling out some trail rations to munch on. Soon the fat sheep was roasted to perfection—golden brown on the outside, juicy on the inside, and smelling good enough to make anyone’s mouth water. Sure enough, the twins kept sneaking glances over—the tasty trail rations their mom had carefully packed suddenly didn’t seem nearly as appealing. Meanwhile, Yolanda and Sara kept up their silent back-and-forth: "He’s gotta take off that helmet to eat, right? Wonder what he looks like under there?" "I bet he’s some seriously handsome brooding type." "My money’s on an old geezer. Haven’t you figured out those scary skeletons are summoned creatures?" After traveling all day, both women were bored out of their minds. Sure, they were way safer now, but they couldn’t stray from the black carriage’s vicinity, and every monster they ran into got demolished by those terrifying skeletons in seconds—no chance to fight, so obviously they were going stir-crazy. Now they pretended to sip water constantly, using their peripheral vision to watch for when the armored guy would remove his helmet. The twins were totally fixated on that fat sheep with its special spice rub, watching without any pretense. Carlos didn’t give a damn—he had nothing to hide anyway. He slowly removed his iron helmet... Slightly pointed ears, intense eyes, features that looked like they’d been carved by the gods themselves. Emerald green eyes that gave off a naturally warm, approachable vibe. But if you looked closer, you’d catch the deeper coldness and nobility that nobody could ever touch. Made you want to get closer while knowing you’d never be able to reach him. By the bonfire, the moment Carlos removed his helmet, dead silence fell. The twins’ attention, originally glued to the fat sheep, couldn’t help but get sucked into Carlos’s emerald gem-like eyes, totally mesmerized. Even Yolanda and Sara, who’d been roughing it in the wilderness for years, accidentally got caught up staring. Carlos sliced off a big chunk of mutton with his knife and started enjoying his meal. Sweet Yolanda’s eyes lit up: "Someone this gorgeous can’t possibly have bad intentions toward our daughters, right?" Usually no-nonsense Sara got mesmerized for a few seconds, then snapped back to reality. "Dangerous, way too dangerous—I almost got sucked in. But hold up, he looks kind of familiar?" The twins, who’d been drawn to beautiful things since they were little, had their black and white pupils practically sparkling. "He’s so beautiful, like a prince from a fairy tale!" "Did you come to sweep Riley (Anna) off her feet?" Deep in those black-and-white mismatched eyes, two mysterious dark runes faintly glowed. Carlos naturally caught all four women staring, his mouth barely curving upward—this was exactly what he’d expected. Had to admit, killer good looks could break the ice with humans real fast. What could he say? Humans were visual creatures who loved beauty and couldn’t stand ugliness. "Ladies, care for some roasted mutton?" Carlos timed it perfectly, tactfully letting them know he’d noticed their staring and they should probably dial it back. "Yes!" "Yes!" Before the two grown women could even respond, the twins bolted over and plopped down right next to Carlos without a second thought. The whole time, their big eyes stayed glued to Carlos’s face without looking away for even a split second. Carlos pulled out four sets of silverware. The Purple Thornblade Skeleton Guard by the bonfire carved up four pieces of mutton, divvied them up, and handed them to the four women. The twins grabbed their mutton, quickly split it in half, and started feeding each other. But they never looked at each other once, relying completely on their twin telepathy. Their bright eyes kept smiling as they stared at Carlos, not wanting to miss a single second. Carlos’s eye twitched—he mentally kicked himself that the effect might be a little too strong. His already drop-dead gorgeous looks had been getting refined since childhood by the Demigod Mark’s influence and the Child of Nature transformation when he awakened his powers. Even though he still had some youthful innocence, he was already otherworldly and at the absolute peak of perfection.
