Chapter 229: Like Walking on Thin Ice
"Congrats—looks like you hit the jackpot with that blood bat."
By all rights, since that ’deal,’ the two of them shouldn’t have had any more contact.
Now this woman had shown up on her own—had something gone sideways with the blood bat?
Carlos tried to figure out what Sabina was really after.
Hearing this,
Sabina set down her tea, crossing her hands under her chin:
"That’s right—the payoff was huge,
Way beyond what I expected..."
Carlos didn’t jump in right away
Because under the table, a soft bare foot kept brushing against his leg, that light touch sending distracting thoughts racing through his head.
Sabina’s eyes held teasing amusement as her upper body unconsciously leaned forward, showing off her snow-white swan neck like carved jade—perfect and flawless, totally mesmerizing.
"Little Bee, whatever reward you want, I can give it to you..."
Her mouth curved upward as the blood bat on her shoulder silently breathed out faint red mist, helping its master’s seduction game to set the mood.
Carlos pushed down his inner chaos, his emerald eyes lifting as he said without missing a beat:
"If possible, spirit gear that boosts skeleton summoning..."
Since you want to hand out goodies, naturally he should ask for what he needed.
Spirit gear made for Death Heralds—having more couldn’t hurt, especially stuff that juiced up skeleton summoning.
Sabina’s expression suddenly went ice cold:
"Spirit gear, always spirit gear."
I’m like this and you don’t even react?
In all these years, she’d never been blown off to this degree.
Pissed as hell, she ’viciously’ kicked Carlos and shot to her feet.
"Take it!"
Three pieces of spirit gear radiating serious spiritual energy suddenly appeared on the table—definitely top-shelf stuff.
"Take your damn spirit gear and get lost!"
The second those words left her mouth, the fuming Sabina immediately realized what she’d said, getting embarrassed and even more pissed:
"You’ve got me so rattled I don’t know what the hell I’m saying."
Snorting coldly, she spun around and stormed out of the hall, huffily marching toward the main gate...
After leaving the hall, Sabina’s angry expression suddenly went calm:
’This way, little Bee should feel guilty as sin about me.’
She knew that rushing things screws everything up.
Little Bee was too young—he might not have developed those kinds of thoughts yet, but she had to stake her claim on prime real estate in his heart.
When he eventually developed... in the future...
Sabina couldn’t help licking her lips, quietly swallowing...
.....
In the hall,
Carlos’s attention got completely sucked in by the three pieces of spirit gear on the table. By the time he snapped out of it, Sabina had already vanished.
"She bailed too fast—was she really that steamed?"
Honestly,
In his book, Sabina, who’d been around for god knows how long, shouldn’t get her panties in a twist so easily over stuff like this.
But... the proof was right here.
"Damn, I’ll make it right next time we cross paths."
Looking at the three incredible spirit gear pieces on the table,
Hand on his heart, Carlos decided their relationship absolutely couldn’t go to shit.
Since he couldn’t catch up with her, he’d check out these three spirit gear pieces first.
He eagerly dove in,
First, a pair of deep green boots
Flickering with spiritual light and carved with badass patterns—definitely not your run-of-the-mill gear.
[Death’s Nubian War Boots (1/2)]
[Quality: Light Gold]
[Durability: 42]
[Equipment Requirements: Spirituality 9/Death Herald Path]
[Special Enhancement: Skeleton Revival level +3, Poison Coating +3]
"Holy shit, actually light gold quality war boots!"
Carlos was over the moon.
Light gold quality was already rare as hen’s teeth, and those made for Death Heralds were even rarer.
Most importantly, these were boots that brought serious defense to the table.
Generally, boots and other armor-type spirit gear were mostly hammered out for Guardian paths.
Those made for Death Heralds, Arcane Practitioners, and similar ranged attack paths were few and far between.
After all, if Death Heralds or Arcane Practitioners got rushed by enemies,
The defense from a pair of boots was jack squat—better to stay light for easier dodging.
"Each one can boost Skeleton Revival +3, Poison Coating +3!"
Sabina had really put some thought into this.
Death Herald path spirit gear had all kinds of enhancements, but those boosting skeleton revival were especially perfect for him.
"Poison Coating—wearing a pair gives level 6 poison coating.
Pretty solid firepower."
[Poison Coating: Burn psionic energy to add deadly poison to weapons. Toxicity goes up with level.]
Nothing fancy to say—another trick up his sleeve. It would be damn useful against poison-weak enemies down the road.
After slipping on these war boots, Carlos grabbed the third piece of spirit gear.
This was a dark blue shoulder guard giving off cold vibes. Just touching it briefly had formed a layer of frost on his hand.
[Frigid Emperor Thermos’s Shoulder Guard]
[Quality: Light Gold]
[Durability: 46]
[Equipment Requirements: Spirituality 9/Death Herald Path]
[Special Enhancement: Skeleton Revival level +3, Chill of the Dead +3]
"Light gold again!"
And it was a rare shoulder guard that could boost skeleton summoning.
He now had another special trick.
[Chill of the Dead: Release massive death-cold air in one breath, freezing all life’s vitality. Power affected by level.]
Combined with previously scored spirit gear enhancements like Bone Spear,
Even without investing in other Death Herald spiritual techniques, Carlos could perfectly pass himself off as a ’normal’ everyday Death Herald.
"Three whole light gold quality Death Herald spirit gear pieces—
This gift is way too generous."
Carlos hadn’t forgotten the [Death Necklace of Bones] Sabina had given him before—also light gold quality.
Put together, that was four light gold spirit gear pieces,
All perfect for Death Heralds and incredibly suited for skeleton summoning enhancement.
"Just providing blood bat intel, no matter how big her gains, couldn’t be worth more than four light gold quality spirit gear pieces."
One piece could barely make sense, two could be chalked up to appreciating a promising kid.
As for three... hell, even four...
Without some special agenda, it would be impossible.
Paying such a steep price—what was it for?
From Sabina’s moves, Carlos already had a pretty good idea.
"Is this enough?"
Carlos couldn’t help weighing whether this was enough to sell himself out.
Obviously impossible.
But if someone asked him to ditch the spirit gear he’d scored, that was even more impossible.
"Take them for now, deal with the rest later..."
Later... when he couldn’t put it off anymore, Carlos figured he’d be of age too.
At that point, she could have her way...
"Damn, my whole life being hunted by others—like walking on thin ice!"
Pushing down his thoughts, Carlos pulled out a black fluid mass—
The fantasy spirit gear dropped by hunting the Black Sand King, perfect for copying shoulder guards.
Two shoulder guards could be equipped.
Placing [Frigid Emperor Thermos’s Shoulder Guard] on the black fluid...
