Chapter 147: Black Sand King After leaving White Poplar Desert, Carlos made a quick pit stop in White Poplar City before blazing through the sky at breakneck speed toward the Desolate Desert... ... Several days later, Carlos made it back to the Desolate Desert and found a reasonably hidden sand dune to hole up in. He pulled out an unused Fantasy Equipment—the one he’d snagged from taking down the dark mist node boss Mineral Ant. Originally Carlos had planned to use this baby to devour the Sun Emperor’s Sword, but wouldn’t you know it, he ran into the dark mist node boss One-Eyed Sand Giant along the way. So he used the Fantasy Equipment from killing that beast to devour the Sun Emperor’s Sword instead. This left the original one gathering dust. "Missing one earring—perfect for copying ’Blessing of the Dead.’" Black goo wrapped around the black crystal earring. Before long, Carlos was holding an exquisite hollow skull, pitch-black and crystalline, giving off an eerie bone scent. Then Carlos waved his hand, calling up the Shield Guards, the twenty-eighth skeleton soldier, and Purple Vortex. "Roar!" The second Purple Vortex showed up, it pointed at Red Spirit floating in mid-air and let loose with a string of roars. Why aren’t you in the summoning space? Purple Vortex was completely baffled, with a sinking feeling in its gut. "Wah!" Of course I’m out here keeping master company! Red Spirit stuck its tongue out at Purple Vortex, then turned away with its nose in the air while lovingly circling around its master. Purple Vortex went pale as a ghost on the spot, its brain stuck on repeat with Red Spirit’s answer... Out... outside... keeping master company!!! Said like it was the most natural thing in the world! Purple Vortex completely lost it. It had been sitting like a chump in summoning space while that red showoff got to stick by master’s side! Jealous rage burned through its soul, mixed with crushing defeat. It had dibs on master—why did the red pest get to stay outside, always tagging along with master! I want that too! "Roar!" Purple Vortex’s inner desire erupted like Mount Vesuvius. "Purple Vortex?" Carlos looked at his retainer with a puzzled expression. Usually when summoned, before getting orders, it would either dig around in the sand or scavenge for parts. Now standing there like a statue was downright weird. "Roar!" Hearing its master’s voice, Purple Vortex immediately responded with earth-shaking roars that could wake the dead. Carlos cleaned out his ears—this reaction was way over the top. Something was definitely up. "Spit it out, what’s eating you?" Could it be some kind of rejection from the pure white eyeball? Carlos instinctively figured his retainer might be having health issues. Purple Vortex hung its head in embarrassment without making a peep. It was torn up inside. What if master shot it down after asking? Once master said no, it would basically be announcing Purple Vortex’s massive, epic, colossal failure! No doubt that red pest would jump at the chance to rub it in! Wrestling with this fear, Purple Vortex’s heart ping-ponged all over the place: Ask! Don’t ask! Ask! Don’t ask! ... Its head and eyes started spinning like a top, completely lost in its own mental tornado. "This is serious!" Carlos sized up the situation and shot Red Spirit a look. "Wah~~" Red Spirit caught on immediately, quietly floating over to Purple Vortex’s side to pick up its soul vibes. A few seconds later: "Wah! Wah! Wah!" Red Spirit ’innocently’ and ’loudly’ spilled a certain retainer’s deepest thoughts. After just one sentence, Purple Vortex went ballistic: "Roar!!!" It desperately fired up Dark Purple Force Field, trying to shut Red Spirit up! "Hold on there! Let Red Spirit finish!" Master had spoken. Purple Vortex reluctantly pulled back the Dark Purple Force Field, though the air around it got thick enough to cut with a knife. Its glare locked onto Red Spirit, trying to make it understand some things were better left unsaid. Red Spirit stuck its tongue out at Purple Vortex again: "Wah! Wah! Wah!" It spilled everything Purple Vortex was thinking, including but not limited to: Being green with envy over the red pest, Also wanting to stick by master’s side all the time, What if master said no way, Monster life would be darker than a coal mine... With each revelation, the crushing pressure around Purple Vortex lightened a bit as its toes dug trenches in the ground. Head down, a feeling it had never experienced before hit its brain like a freight train, making it want to dig a hole and disappear forever! "Huh?" So that was the deal. Carlos found it pretty entertaining. "Purple Vortex, unless I really need you back in summoning space, if you don’t want to go back, then don’t." "Roar!" Master’s sudden green light was like water in the desert, instantly bringing the mortified Purple Vortex back to life. It raised its head with pride, snorting at Red Spirit with thick smugness written all over its face: Bet you didn’t see that coming! Master said yes! This round goes to me!!! Red Spirit rolled its eyes, not wanting to deal with this blockhead. Did it even get what "unless necessary" meant? It wasn’t about to spell it out. Without looking back, it returned to master’s side. After sorting out Purple Vortex’s mood crisis, Carlos randomly picked six Shield Guards and started handing out assignments: "You’ll work in teams of two, each leading three skeleton soldiers to hunt monsters. When they’ve soaked up enough death energy, bring them back and teach them the ropes with Bone Swordsmanship and Bone Shield Tactics!" "Roar!" Six Shield Guards immediately took off with their three skeleton soldiers each. "Other Shield Guards and retainers, go wild—hunt whatever you can find!" "Roar!" "Wah!" Purple Vortex and Red Spirit locked eyes, sparks flying. This round, I’m definitely taking the win! ... Several days later, Carlos had gained three shiny new Tulip Shield Guards, wrapped up his downtime, and started heading toward a particular destination... ... Desolate Desert, some towering mountain. Years of wind and sand had stripped the entire mountain bare—not a speck of green anywhere. "Talk about time changing everything—what used to be a lake island is now a mountain peak." Even today, halfway up the mountain, you could still make out faint traces of where the old island had been chewed up by seawater. The mountaintop, being the former island, had pretty straightforward terrain—flat edges with a ’little mountain’ off to the east. Carlos soared high and took a bird’s-eye view. On the little mountain and all around it sat countless black tents set up in strict military formation. Red Spirit looked down with curiosity: "Wah?" "This is the final dark mist node in the Desolate Desert: Black Sand Military Camp!" According to the old stories, way back in the day, one pitch-black night, the freshly pitched Black Sand Kingdom army suddenly got hit with terrible misfortune. Not a single soul in the entire army made it out alive, and every last corpse turned into creepy sand sculptures. Leading this army was the Black Sand Kingdom’s ruler—the Black Sand King himself! After the dark mist rolled in, this army ’came back to life’ all over again!
