Chapter 216: Walking on Eggshells
The head was covered with wrinkles,
Age spots and creases—totally looked like someone who’d reached the end of the line.
But Jeff was clearly in his prime—she’d seen him just recently.
"No... no way, how could it be Lord Withered’s power!"
Luckybe’s face looked like hell—she still couldn’t wrap her head around it.
Even weirder,
The expression left on Jeff’s head wasn’t despair, but a hopeful smile like he was waiting for rescue.
Combined with Lord Withered mysteriously going MIA this morning,
Luckybe went quiet, her pupils dilating. Not knowing what she was thinking, she muttered:
"It can’t be... impossible... how could..."
She actually believed most of it in her heart,
Because the timing of Lord Withered’s disappearance
Matched up perfectly.
She was basically falling apart.
"Sir, I’ve already sent new teams to double-check."
The mid-tier Black Sinner said quietly.
Luckybe snapped back to reality:
"No, I’ve gotta go myself!"
She had to see for herself whether this was really what was left of Lord Withered’s power!
"Si... sir,
Today’s plan..."
The mid-tier Black Sinner reminded her—right now was crunch time for luring human powerhouses.
If Lord Luckybe went to investigate, who would run the show?
Luckybe snorted:
"Without Lord Withered backing us up,
Everything we’re doing now is pointless!
We need to figure out the truth behind Jeff and the other clansmen getting whacked first!"
In just a few seconds, Luckybe’s head cleared up.
If it really was Lord Withered who took out Jeff and the other clansmen, there had to be damn good reasons.
Without getting to the bottom of it,
What if someday she and her people also screwed up somehow? They might follow Jeff’s path before scoring any points.
"Set it up—today’s mission gets postponed!
Everything waits until I get back!"
"Yes, Lord Luckybe!"
The mid-tier Black Sinner immediately got moving and went out to pass along orders.
Before leaving, Luckybe nervously took one last look at the withered statue at the ritual’s center.
"Lord Withered, what the hell are you trying to pull?"
Jeff and the other clansmen getting tossed aside like used hunting dogs
Made Luckybe feel seriously threatened. Without getting to the bottom of this, she couldn’t chill out.
....
Rock Sand City, District Four, Human Secret Command Post,
"Young Master Carlos, you actually showed up."
Garrison Captain Barossa looked pumped seeing the approaching figure.
Though this operation was run jointly by three Controllers, Carlos packed considerable punch.
His underlings Purple Vortex and Red Spirit were definitely peak high-tier powerhouses—more muscle meant better odds.
"Barossa, what’s the situation?"
Carlos was escorted into the command post by soldiers, Red Spirit spinning overhead, constantly reading nearby soul vibes.
Behind him, Purple Vortex and Ginya flanked left and right, watching for trouble.
"Everything matches what was in the tip-off letter almost exactly.
We’ve found traces of major Black Sinner activity.
We just wait for them to show up, then we can bag them all at once!"
Barossa seemed relaxed—this feeling of having everything locked down was pretty sweet.
Carlos checked out his surroundings.
Nearly half of Rock Sand City’s high-tier powerhouses were here.
Some meditated with their eyes closed,
Some cast spiritual techniques watching the outside,
Others looked curiously at him...
The three Controllers weren’t here—he didn’t know if they hadn’t shown up yet or were somewhere else.
Perfect—
Without Controllers around, Red Spirit could totally cut loose, flying around the command post,
Freely reading these high-tier powerhouses’ soul vibes, hunting for the mole hidden in Rock Sand City.
That mole had passed along Rock Sand City leadership’s plans
In complete detail to the Black Sinners—definitely one of the high-tier psychics...
...
Red Spirit finished making the rounds and flew back to its master, shaking its head.
’Not here?’
Carlos got Red Spirit’s message.
The mole wasn’t among this bunch of high-tier psychics.
"Barossa, where are the other captains, security officers, and deputy directors?"
Barossa thought Carlos was worried about how the Black Sinner encirclement was going and answered:
"Following the Controllers’ orders, they went ahead to block off several key routes."
Carlos frowned a bit.
This way, having Red Spirit ID all the high-tier psychics today was basically impossible.
"Captain Barossa, when they get back, give me a heads up."
After saying that,
Carlos took off without hesitation.
He still needed to hunt down the other Black Sinner hideout—
The group actually plotting the portal ritual.
"???"
Barossa looked totally lost.
How did he bail right after getting here?
Why did Young Master Carlos want to see them?
He had a feeling something big was about to go down.
...
Three-Fork Mountain,
A red-eyed crow
Carefully slipped through the sand waterfall
And got into the cave behind it.
"Withering aura!"
Through the ’magic eye,’
High-tier Black Sinner Luckybe could clearly see the leftover power in the cave.
Her expression was grim as hell.
The whole cave had withering traces everywhere.
Luckybe’s magic eye flickered back and forth.
Going deeper,
She saw corpses of clansmen, aged and lifeless, scattered all over the cave.
A bone-deep chill crept up in her heart.
Taking a deep breath,
She’d seen this nightmare scene countless times before,
But those had all been clan enemies.
This time it showed up on clansmen.
"Why the hell did Lord Withered
Slaughter the clansmen!"
No matter how much she didn’t want to believe it,
The facts told her
This was all Lord Withered’s handiwork—
Killing Jeff and all his underling clansmen.
She couldn’t figure out what massive screw-up Jeff and the other clansmen had made to meet such a brutal end.
Right then,
She totally got a human saying—
What it meant to be walking on eggshells.
Luckybe searched everywhere with a racing heart, trying to find leftover clues to explain all this.
"The clansmen showed no signs of fighting back."
As she went deeper into the cave, Luckybe’s grim expression got even nastier.
There wasn’t a trace of battle anywhere in the cave.
This was pretty obvious—
Facing Lord Withered, the clansmen couldn’t even think about disobeying, let alone fighting back.
"Not just Lord Withered’s leftover power,
But also some terrifying mysterious power, deep and impossible to read!"
Following this remaining power
To the cave’s deepest part, the red-eyed crow instantly freaked out,
"Dark... dark mist aura!"
Flap flap,
Under pure instinct,
The red-eyed crow desperately beat its wings, flying toward the exit.
After flying halfway,
It realized:
"Wait, that seems to be just leftover dark mist aura..."
Carefully looking back,
It was indeed just traces of dark mist aura—whatever caused it had long since split.
