Chapter 227: Iris Learns Everything
Connecting this to the garrison’s weird shit,
Iris immediately got it:
"So that’s the deal—
The garrison is keeping this under wraps."
"The garrison?"
Iris explained:
"When I rolled up to Rock Sand City’s garrison today with my crew,
I found there was only one high-tier psychic in the whole damn place,
And the commander was nowhere to be found."
Carlos knew why:
"That’s because someone dropped an anonymous tip that Black Sinners would throw their ritual in District Four.
Rock Sand City’s heavy hitters, led by three Controllers,
Are currently camping out in District Four, trying to bag all the Black Sinners in one sweep."
Hearing this,
Iris smelled bullshit:
"That’s not right—how the hell could the Black Sinners’ ritual spot get leaked?"
According to the history books,
Black Sinners’ secret ritual locations were known only to a handful of Black Sinner big shots.
How could it get blown?
Looking at the entire track record of Black Sinner secret ritual failures,
There hadn’t been a single case of ritual locations getting exposed beforehand.
Either the Black Sinners got spotted by human powerhouses before the ritual,
Or the ritual started but got shut down by human powerhouses.
Seeing his sister’s confusion,
Carlos laid it out:
"Sis,
That’s because this is the Black Sinners’ con game—
They played Rock Sand City’s leadership with misdirection."
"Are Rock Sand City’s leaders really that stupid?"
Iris felt seriously pissed at Rock Sand City’s leadership.
Before this, the Golden Sand Society’s dirty deals with the Black Poison Faction
Went unnoticed for ages—it was her brother who sniffed it out, risking his neck alone in a foreign city to clean up their mess.
Now they were getting jerked around by Black Sinners.
She was starting to wonder whether these people truly didn’t know or were just playing dumb.
Carlos cracked a slight grin:
"Stupid?
Not necessarily.
When I wiped out a bunch of Black Sinners,
I accidentally stumbled on the fact that there’s actually a mole in Rock Sand City
Who fed Rock Sand City leadership’s classified orders to the Black Sinners word for word."
"A mole!!!"
Instantly,
Thick killing intent erupted from Iris.
Massive, terrifying psionic energy spread like wildfire.
The sand lake started churning without any wind, sand fish dove deep and stayed put, scared shitless.
"If there’s a mole,
Then everything makes sense!"
Iris’s mind was racing.
It was exactly because of this backstabbing mole
That the Golden Sand Society’s dirty deals with the Black Poison Faction never got discovered!
The Black Sinners could brazenly jerk Rock Sand City’s leadership around.
Though she wondered
How her brother knew all this stuff,
It didn’t stop Iris from believing him.
"Carlos, you haven’t spilled to Rock Sand City’s leadership about the mole, right?"
Rock Sand City’s leadership clearly still didn’t know about getting played by the mole, otherwise they wouldn’t have sent pretty much all their muscle to District Four.
Sis is so damn sharp!
Carlos nodded:
"Right—to keep from tipping them off, I planned to dig around quietly."
The key was that the Black Sinners’ invasion plan had been shut down by him.
Without False King-level firepower, even if they managed to crack it open, they couldn’t keep the ritual going.
"But today,
Rock Sand City’s security goons
Very conveniently nabbed a Black Sinner.
That Black Sinner confessed
The mole’s physical traits—pointed ears, suspected to be a half-elf."
"Half-elf?
No way—Rock Sand City doesn’t have any half-elves on the payroll."
Iris frowned.
What kind of bullshit was this? There was intel about a mole, but it pointed to some non-existent half-elf?
"No, sis,
This is most likely the Black Sinners’ scheme
Specifically targeting me to muddy the waters.
Though I’m not officially on the books, I know all the recent high-level orders against Black Sinners clear as day.
That stranger in the courtyard, Security Officer Willie, came specifically to drag me to some inquiry meeting."
Carlos shared his theory.
"The mole actually wants to frame you!"
Iris was seeing red:
"Too damn cocky!"
Psionic energy exploded,
The sand lake started boiling,
Sand fish floated belly-up on the surface, killed by this crushing psionic wave.
"Carlos, get your ass back to Ember City now.
Leave the rest to sis!"
In her rage, Iris couldn’t help sweating about her brother’s safety.
Though Carlos’s three companions were pretty badass, Carlos himself was the weak link.
The mole working with Black Sinners in such blatant framing.
Iris just wanted Carlos to immediately bail from this shitstorm.
"No,
I can’t go back to Ember City."
Without Red Spirit’s abilities to help, tracking down the mole wouldn’t be easy.
Leaving Red Spirit to pitch in seemed pointless too.
Wait,
Everything got discovered by him.
Bailing out now,
The credit calculations would get seriously shortchanged.
He still needed to trade for quality Death Herald gear from Rock Sand City’s stash.
"No,
You’re going back.
It’s way too dangerous here!
This isn’t something a low-tier should be messing with!"
Iris shot him down hard.
Right now,
She couldn’t let her brother be stubborn.
If the Black Sinners managed to crack open the portal again this time, what awaited here would be a bloodbath.
Iris just wanted Carlos far away, even though his strength was already pretty solid.
She’d never expected
All her planning had missed this angle.
"Sis, there’s not much danger.
Besides, we still have teleportation scrolls as backup."
Carlos pushed back.
Catching moles,
Crushing Black Sinners—such major shit had been investigated this far. How could he duck out?
Iris pinched Carlos’s cheeks:
"Be good,
Listen to sis,
When this mess is over,
You can hang out in Rock Sand City as long as you want."
Her voice was gentle but her tone said ’no arguments.’
"..."
This kiddie talk made Carlos’s teeth hurt.
Damn,
Looked like sis was dead set on keeping him out of this.
"Fine."
Carlos gave in.
"Perfect—I knew you wouldn’t make sis worry."
Iris lovingly tapped Carlos’s forehead in approval.
Carlos got it.
With sis handling it plus Red Spirit’s backup, theoretically there shouldn’t be problems.
As for the credit exchange issues, having sis handle it was just as good.
"But Red Spirit has to stay.
It’s got special abilities to sniff out high-tier and below moles."
As he talked,
Carlos waved Red Spirit over.
"Chirp!"
Red Spirit floated over. Getting its master’s orders,
It immediately felt bummed:
"Chirp!"
Leaving master!!!
Its red eyes showed a totally heartbroken expression.
Carlos sensed Red Spirit’s funk
And hyped it up:
"Red Spirit, I know your abilities are incredible.
The whole mole thing depends completely on you!"
"Chirp!"
Immediately,
Red Spirit’s dejected mood vanished, replaced by massive pride.
It beat its little ribcage, showing no problem leaving it all to him!
Iris looked curiously at the little monster floating above her brother’s head:
"It can sniff out moles?"
Her tone sounded skeptical.
"Yep!
Red Spirit has crazy emotional perception. If someone’s got guilty thoughts, it can definitely spot them!"
Carlos put a spin on Red Spirit’s abilities.
After all,
The ability to decode soul frequencies
Would cause major chaos if it got out among humans, a race that was super protective of mental privacy.
Though telling sis Red Spirit’s real abilities probably wouldn’t risk exposure,
This mind-reading ability was way too perfect for interrogation.
If sis knew,
Nine times out of ten she’d borrow Red Spirit for grilling duty.
His future plans needed Red Spirit in tons of places—it couldn’t get borrowed long-term.
"Incredible—
Abilities like that actually exist in the world."
Iris was half-convinced.
If this little monster could really spot bad actors,
That would be amazing!
Not just Rock Sand City, but surrounding city-states, even Ember City—
Iris felt an urge to thoroughly investigate everywhere.
"Carlos, if there’s nothing urgent,
Get out of the city now, quietly.
I’ll handle everything else."
"..."
This was way too fast...
Carlos was blown away by Iris’s lightning-quick decisiveness.
Iris gently touched his cheek,
Comforting:
"Rock Sand City is ground zero right now.
The sooner you bail, the safer.
Be good,
Listen to sis."
"Alright, sis.
But there’s some details I need to fill you in on."
Can’t fight city hall.
Carlos reluctantly went with this plan.
He could conveniently hunt for materials needed for the shield guards’ next evolution.
Iris nodded.
Leaving was smart.
With Black Sinners and human moles gunning for him,
Getting out of the crosshairs was definitely the safest play.
