Chapter 221: The Monster Is Coming
Chief Security Officer Freeman was buried in paperwork. Hearing his subordinate’s confusion, he didn’t even bother looking up,
Coolly asking back:
"Todd,
You got any clue what this whole show is really about?"
Todd jumped right in:
"Frame Carlos Valois, hit him before he can hit us,
Pin the whole mole mess on his doorstep!
That way,
We’re in the clear."
The more he talked, the smoother it rolled off his tongue.
He felt like he’d found the perfect fall guy.
Once the charges stuck,
His jumpy nerves would finally settle down.
Chief Security Officer Freeman slammed the files shut, looked up with eyes like he was staring at village idiot:
"Todd, I gotta say I gave you way too much credit for brains."
"Sir, I..."
Todd’s jaw dropped. Where’d that insult come from?
He thought he’d hit the nail on the head.
Chief Security Officer Freeman:
"You actually think Carlos Valois is the mole?"
Todd was floored.
Think? What think?
Weren’t we in cahoots with the Black Sinners to frame the guy?
I’m the damn mole!
Seeing his dense subordinate was actually this thick,
Freeman felt like banging his head against the wall.
But being dumb as a box of rocks made him easier to puppet around.
"Let’s say you knew jack squat about this.
When you heard that Black Sinner prisoner’s sob story,
What would you think?"
Todd shot back without thinking:
"Only a complete moron would buy Black Sinner bullshit!"
Good,
Not totally brain-dead.
Freeman actually cracked something resembling satisfaction.
"Even a blockhead like you wouldn’t swallow it.
The other captains, deputy directors, security officers, hell, even Marin and Nelson’s reactions are easy to predict."
Todd connected the dots:
"They’d all think
Going after Carlos Valois is pure garbage!"
Wait... what’s this ’even I believe it’ crap?
I’m a high-ranking District One Security Officer, damn it. Don’t I rate a little respect in this comparison?
After it sank in,
Todd had fresh questions:
"Sir... boss, if the Black Sinners’ trash talk won’t stick,
Why bother with this circus?"
Chief Security Officer Freeman said matter-of-factly:
"Ever hear the tale of ’The Monster is Coming’?"
"..."
Todd stared blankly.
Freeman felt like talking to this numbskull was pure torture.
"Out on Rock Sand City’s edge,
There used to be this little village.
Some troublemaker kid
One day started hollering: The monster is coming!
The villagers bought it hook, line, and sinker and hauled ass with their families.
When they figured out it was the brat’s prank, they beat the snot out of him and moved back.
Next day, looking for payback,
The kid screamed monster again. The villagers half-believed it and ran off again, only to get played for fools and laughed at by the little shit.
Third day, the kid started shrieking in pure terror that the monster was coming.
But this time not one villager gave him the time of day.
They beat him black and blue. The kid could only run for his life, bawling his eyes out.
Turns out,
The monster really did show up.
Except for the kid who got the hell out of dodge, every last villager got chomped up by the monster."
While spinning this yarn, Freeman’s usually stone-cold face showed a flicker of pain before going back to normal.
Todd had a lightbulb moment:
"Holy shit, I remember now!
I heard the old-timers tell this story when I was knee-high to a grasshopper.
Later that kid supposedly became some kind of psychic,
Pretty gifted from what I heard.
But weird thing is, nobody seemed to know the kid’s name."
Freeman’s voice turned to ice:
"You getting the picture now?"
The Chief Security Officer clearly didn’t want to jaw about that kid anymore.
Todd grinned sheepishly:
"Sir, I got it.
You mean,
Just like ’The Monster is Coming,’
That Black Sinner prisoner’s crap about Carlos Valois being the mole obviously won’t fly with anyone and will end up proven as total horseshit.
So when Carlos Valois claims
He got wind of Rock Sand City having a mole from those Three-Fork Mountain Black Sinners,
Everyone’s gonna think it’s just more dying Black Sinner garbage!"
Only now did Todd wrap his head around
His boss’s real game plan!
This was pure genius!
If he wasn’t actually the mole himself,
After this whole song and dance, he’d be wondering if the Black Sinners were really just blowing smoke up everyone’s ass.
"Sir,
Your plan is bulletproof!
Layer after layer—my respect flows like a raging river, roaring like thunder..."
Through a string of ass-kissing, even Freeman, famous for being cold as winter, couldn’t help but smirk a little.
After running his mouth till it was desert-dry, Todd finally shut up.
Then something hit him:
"Sir, there’s one thing that’s got me scratching my head.
Even with the whole ’Monster is Coming’ angle,
Why’d we jump the gun,
Making folks think we’re chomping at the bit to grill Carlos Valois?
Wouldn’t it be slicker to sit tight and let everyone else handle the dirty work?"
Chief Security Officer Freeman was genuinely shocked that Todd had spotted this wrinkle.
He didn’t answer right away but got up and strolled to the window:
"Todd, you know
In this world, truth is always truth.
No matter how deep you bury it, fate’s gonna dig it up eventually."
His tone was all kinds of complicated.
"..."
Todd was speechless. At a time like this, you’re still playing word games? Can we cut to the chase?
But as a lackey, he had to play along, acting ’confused’ and waiting for more.
"Sir, I’m lost."
Freeman’s dark eyes stared into the distance, his mouth twisting into a cold grin:
"But as long as whoever finds the truth takes a permanent dirt nap, everything gets buried again!
Until the next truth-finder pops up!"
With those words,
Bone-chilling, massive psionic energy slammed down on the area.
Todd felt like he was drowning in quicksand, life and death totally out of his hands.
His eyes went wide as saucers:
"You... you want to ice... ice Carlos Valois!!!"
Freeman was honestly surprised that Todd had figured out his angle.
"Todd, gotta hand it to you,
You’re firing on more cylinders this time."
After getting the Chief Security Officer’s nod,
Todd’s forehead instantly turned into a waterfall of cold sweat.
This was way worse than teaming up with Black Sinners for some mud-slinging. That was just talk that could definitely get cleared up later without causing too much of a shitstorm.
But if Carlos Valois caught a case of the deads in Rock Sand City, all hell would break loose!
Forget everything else, just Silver Sword Duke Iris Valois would definitely pull out all the stops hunting for answers and payback.
Once things went nuclear, the Weaver Lords from Ember City might roll up personally.
Then...
Todd shivered like a leaf. He stammered:
"Sir... boss,
We ain’t there yet.
If Carlos Valois buys it in Rock Sand City, the fallout..."
Freeman spun around, thinking his subordinate’s brain power was truly hopeless:
"Who said we’re the ones pulling the trigger?"
"As long as it ain’t us doing the deed. As long as it ain’t us."
Todd’s tight expression loosened up big time.
