And I’m certain you’re intelligent enough to deduce why that is." He paused, allowing his words to ring in his mind before continuing, "But you, on the other hand, are vulnerable. At any moment, these creatures would get to you and turn you into their afternoon meal." White’s eyes narrowed, his lips curling into a sneer. "How dare a kid like you try to intimidate me?" he spat, his voice dripping with disdain. "Keep on talking, I will never contact Tasha." Dave’s expression hardened, his patience thinning. "Well, if you’re unwilling to do as I say," he said coldly, "then perhaps you’ll serve as a very delicious meal for these hungry beasts." With a subtle command through his mind, Dave directed his two hybrids to lift White’s chair. The hybrids moved swiftly with synchronized movements as they carried White, still bound to the chair, into the air. "Hey! What are you doing?" White’s voice cracked with panic as he was suspended above the ground, his legs dangling helplessly. The hybrids carried him effortlessly, placing him directly in the path of the approaching beasts. The creatures, sensing the proximity of their potential prey, had let out loud growls, as their eyes were fixed on White. Fear surged through White as he realized the danger. His voice trembled as he shouted, "Please, please! Okay, I’ll do it. I’ll call her! Just don’t let them get near me!" Dave stood motionless, his gaze unwavering. "Very well," he replied, his tone devoid of emotion. He gestured for the hybrids to return White to his original position. The hybrids complied, setting White back in his chair. Dave then approached him, his presence imposing. "Now?" he inquired. White swallowed hard, his throat dry. "I’ll do it," he muttered, his voice barely audible. "But you have to untie me first." Dave’s eyes narrowed. "No," he responded firmly. "But I can’t reach my phone while I’m tied up!" White protested, his frustration evident. Dave’s lips curled into a smirk. "Then I’ll retrieve it for you." He reached into White’s pocket, pulling out a mini walkie-talkie device. It was smaller than the normal walkie talkies as this can be carried around anywhere. It was almost the size of a 2g phone, but even smaller. "What line is she on?" Dave demanded, his voice sharp. "And you better say the truth." White hesitated, his mind racing. "Promise you’ll release me once I call her," he bargained. "As long as it’s Tasha you’re calling," Dave replied, "you’ll be a free man." White nodded reluctantly. "She’s on line 2," he confessed. Dave’s smirk deepened. "Good," he said. "Now, here’s what you’ll tell her." **** At the far end of the street stood a dilapidated building, its windows boarded up and its once-pristine facade now marred by time and neglect. Across from it, a large hospital buzzed with activity. Ambulances were lined up at the perimeter, but it wasn’t to transport patients, rather it was used as a blockage to prevent beasts from coming in. The air was thick with tension as medical personnel and armed guards moved around, their eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of danger. Unbeknownst to them, five individuals were observing them from the shadows of the abandoned building opposite them. Their eyes flicked between the hospital and the guards, calculating their every move. "We have no choice," one of the executives murmured, her voice low and urgent. "We have to pretend we’ve been attacked by beasts. We can’t just waltz in there and ask for medical supplies." Another nodded in agreement, her brow furrowed in thought. "Agreed. But we’ll need two volunteers. They must have injuries convincing enough to make them believe we’ve been attacked." Simbi let out a short laugh, though it lacked humor. "So, you want us to get attacked by beasts on purpose?" Her gaze swept over the group, searching for any sign of jest. But the seriousness etched on their faces told her they were not joking. Her eyes met each of theirs, and she saw only determination and resolve. The weight of their plan settled over her, and she fell silent. Suddenly, Tasha’s pocket buzzed softly, the vibration almost imperceptible. She instinctively reached for it, her fingers brushing the device before she quickly silenced it, ensuring the others remained unaware. She stood and excused herself, her movements deliberate and calm. As one of the senior executives, her departure went unquestioned. The others had grown accustomed to her occasional absences, never suspecting her intentions. Only Simbi had once inquired about her whereabouts, at the time when they had just split from the main group, but Tasha had offered no explanation, and the matter was long forgotten. Tasha exited the room, her footsteps echoing softly in the dimly lit corridor. She moved with determination, her heels clicking against the cold, tiled floor of the building as she made her way to a secluded office at the far end of the hall. The door creaked open, revealing a sparse, utilitarian space. Inside, she retrieved the mini walkie-talkie from her pocket, the small device cold against her palm. With a practiced motion, she adjusted the volume, the soft static filling the silence before a voice crackled through. "Hello, Tasha, are you there? Over." Her grip tightened around the device as she pressed it to her lips. "White, are you out of your mind? What do you think you’re doing calling me at this hour? I told you not to contact me unless I call you," she hissed, her voice laced with irritation. "I’m sorry, but there’s something urgent we need to discuss," White’s voice responded, tinged with urgency. "It’s about the kid we captured, Dave, right? We need to meet. Come to my lab tomorrow morning by six. Over." The line went dead before Tasha could even respond. She stared at the walkie-talkie in her hand, her breath shallow. "What the hell is wrong with him?" she muttered under her breath, a mix of frustration and confusion clouding her thoughts. Her mind raced, replaying White’s words. "What could have happened with Dave? Don’t tell me my plan failed?" The weight of the situation pressed down on her, but she forced herself to remain composed. She couldn’t afford to let her emotions dictate her actions now. With a deep breath, Tasha pocketed the device and exited the office. As she retraced her steps back to the meeting room, her mind churned with strategies. She needs to come up with a plausible excuse for her brief absence and prepare for the inevitable meeting with White tomorrow. Or the group will start suspecting her. She was curious to find out what happened to Dave.
