Chapter 144: CH 144: The big secretDave’s words echoed through the courtyard, loud and clear, leaving no one in doubt about what he had said. The option he had presented hung in the air, a choice between freedom and loyalty. For a couple of minutes, the crowd stood frozen, each person glancing at their neighbor, wondering what the others would do. But as the silence stretched on, it became clear that no one was going to leave. The tension dissipated, replaced by a sense of collective resolve. Dave’s eyes scanned the crowd, a hint of surprise flickering across his face. "No one is leaving?" he asked, his voice tinged with curiosity. And since no one was departing, Dave had nodded to himself, seeming to approve of their decision. "Alright, I’m glad you guys have decided to stay," he said, his tone turning serious. "This is the best option you’ve got, if you want to survive this apocalypse. Which is why I will be revealing a big secret to you all." He paused, his gaze sweeping across the crowd as he searched for signs of understanding, before he eventually proceeding with his words. "Our world, this world, is going through an apocalypse, and do you know the cause?" he asked, his voice laced with a hint of challenge. "Has anyone even thought of why this was happening in the first place? Why beasts are roaming our once peaceful home? Why meteors appear from the sky damaging our houses and gardens?" The crowd’s response was unanimous – a sea of shaking heads, a chorus of curious expressions. For a moment, Dave’s question hung in the air, unanswered. He then pressed on, his words probing deeper. "Has anyone ever thought of a way out of this apocalypse, except from the thought of killing beasts, surviving, triumphing over others who are weaker than us?" Again, the crowd’s response was the same – a mixture of guilt and ignorance, as they shook their heads once more. The silence that followed was heavy with anticipation, as Dave’s words seemed to hint at a deeper truth, one that only he knew. "The apocalypse, it didn’t start on its own," Dave said, his words dripping with conviction. "This is something out of a fantasy novel, yet it’s happening in our real world, and now we’re living in that fantasy." The crowd’s eyes furrowed as they processed the implications, the weight of his words settling in. Dave’s gaze swept across the crowd, his voice taking on a philosophical tone. "The powers we have, the things that are happening, the beasts, everything is all from a fantasy novel, yet it’s happening to us like we’re some characters from a novel." The comparison hung in the air, a mixture of wonder and unease. "But who could be the cause of all these things that are happening?" Dave asked, his question probing the very heart of the mystery. The crowd’s silence was palpable, as if they were collectively holding their breath. It was then that Jefar, the blonde-haired kid that Dave had walked up to minutes ago, had spoken up, his voice was loud as it carried out across the yard. "The Author?!" The word dropped like a bombshell, and every gaze turned towards him, before they had all burst into laughter. Dave’s expression turned thoughtful, he wanted to laugh as well but he decided to keep it in, and instead reply him, but before he could respond, Jefar had spoken up again. "Or, maybe it’s the writer?" Jefar said, his eyes sparkling with confidence this time. Dave shook his head. "No Jefar, that’s still the sa-" But Jefar’s enthusiasm wouldn’t be dampened. "Oh, he knows my name! No one knows my name, then you must be the one!" Jefar exclaimed, his face alight with joy. Dave’s confusion was evident. "Huh? Be the one what?" he asked, his brows furrowed. Jefar’s response was immediate. "You’re the one causing the apocalypse to happen!" He exclaimed. The crowd erupted into a mixture of murmurs and laughter, some people chuckling at Jefar’s enthusiasm, while others looked on in confusion. Dave’s expression was a picture of bewilderment, as if he had stumbled into a conversation he didn’t quite understand. A low chuckle rumbled in his throat as he shook his head. Peter then moved closer to Dave, who stood there looking both baffled and amused. "Sorry about that," Peter said, his voice low and explanatory. "The kid may look sharp, but sometimes his reasoning is kinda...somehow. He also has autism." Dave’s chuckle deepened, and he nodded in understanding. "Oh, I see," he said, "but he’s quite funny. I like him." Peter only just smiled, seeming to appreciate Dave’s reaction. He then turned to Dave, "Do you mind me addressing them for a little bit?" Peter asked. "Sure, no worries." Dave nodded, and Peter took the opportunity to speak up. "Hello everyone, can we please keep it down a bit and listen to what Dave has to say," he said, his voice firm but gentle. "And Jefar, I know your name, so please keep quiet till we’re done, okay?" Jefar nodded, looking slightly chastened, and Peter smiled. "Thank you," Dave said, his gratitude evident. He took a deep breath and began to speak again, his voice clear and commanding. "So, as I was saying before Mr Jefar interrupted me," A low chuckle was heard amongst the crowd. "The reason we’re facing all of these problems is because of one fellow," he said, his words hanging in the air. "And surprisingly, this fellow isn’t someone from down here. I’m from down here, so don’t think I’m the one," he added with a wry smile, and the crowd burst into laughter. Heeding Peter’s warning, they had immediately kept quiet to let him speak. Then, the atmosphere shifted, becoming more settled as Dave continued. "Now this is where it gets serious," he said, his voice dropping to a more ominous tone. "The fellow causing all of this is none other than a god. He’s called the god of apocalypse," Another murmuring had went off with mixed feelings and reactions from everyone, some believing his words, some not believing, and there are also those that didn’t fall in the two groups. They don’t know if they believe him or not. But Dave continued anyway, "Do you know that a mention of his name could summon him to our presence? You don’t believe me? His name is..."
