Chapter 40: CH 040: How is he alive? (MR4)Mass Release For Wednesday! **** Although, Dave didn’t try to gain Ella’s affection or anything, still it seemed like it was her who developed feelings for him. Compared to Simbi, he had impressed her by saving her and the group, causing her affectionate level to increase. But Ella’s own had increased voluntarily without Dave having to do anything. Was that possible? He read the rest of the system messages, and he realized that he had received some exp from completing his second daily quest, the one having him to kill ten beasts in a day. The system must have counted the boulderback beasts he killed back then. But now, he still have the mandatory quest to complete, maybe after the punishment ends, he’ll work on that. But then he remembered that he still needed some energy points to make that possible. At that moment, his thoughts had been interrupted as they approached a site with gruesome beasts laying anyhow on the ground. The truck rumbled along the road, its tires slowing down before it eventually came to an abrupt stop. The sudden halt jolted everyone inside, and those in the cargo area wasted no time in reacting. Curiosity mixed with anxiety, and they swiftly scrambled to exit out of the truck. Simbi was the first to leap out, her feet hitting the ground with a sense of urgency. Ella followed closely behind, her expression a mix of confusion and concern. The rest of the group was right on their heels, each of them eager to understand why the truck had turned around and why they had headed back towards the very place they’d just barely escaped from. As they approached the front of the truck, they saw Silas stepping down from the driver’s side. His face was unreadable, but the tension in his posture told them something was off. Simbi didn’t hesitate for a second. Her eyes narrowed as she strode straight towards him, her frustration bubbling over. "What’s going on?" she demanded, her voice sharper than usual, a rare edge of anger in it. "Why did we turn back? What did you do to Dave?" Without thinking, her hands shot out, grabbing the front of Silas’s shirt and yanking him toward her. The force of the action was enough to push him against the side of the truck, his eyes widening in alarm. "Hey, hey! What are you doing?" Silas stammered, his voice tinged with fear as he tried to wriggle out of her grasp. "I didn’t do anything to Dave!" Simbi’s grip tightened instinctively, but before she could say another word, a voice from behind them cut through the tension. It was Dave. Simbi froze. She turned just in time to see Dave stepping out of the truck, his expression a mix of confusion and surprise. He had been watching the entire scene unfold, his eyes widening as he realized what was happening. His gaze flickered from Silas to Simbi, and for the first time, something in his chest fluttered, an unfamiliar warmth spreading through him. ’She really does care about me.’ The thought hit him harder than he expected. Simbi’s eyes widened too when she saw him. Her hands immediately released Silas, taking a small, startled step back. She didn’t quite know what to say, her heartbeat suddenly quickening. The intensity of the moment shifted, and she suddenly felt a little embarrassed by her own actions. "Dave," Simbi said softly, her voice almost apologetic now as she looked at him. Her cheeks flushed slightly, a hint of awkwardness slipping into her words. Dave didn’t know how to respond. He opened his mouth, then closed it again, his mind racing. For a brief moment, he just stood there, watching Simbi, still trying to process the fact that she had cared enough to act the way she did. It was surprising, and yet, it felt... nice. With a quick glance at Silas, who was still rubbing his chest where Simbi had gripped him, Dave spoke up. "Are you okay?" His voice was calm. "No I’m not!" Silas replied. "I’m not asking you." Dave replied back, as his question was directed at Simbi. "Yeah, I’m fine actually. I thought he did something to you." She said, her face reddening as she revealed her concerns. "No, no. I’m fine. Nothing happened to me." Dave replied. "See, I told you." Ella had spoken up, and for a moment, but Dave’s eyes and hers had met. But Dave had winked at her before she could turn to look away, her face also reddening at this. While the two girls blushed at Dave’s action, the rest of the group whose curiosity was peaked, couldn’t help but demand an answer to the one question that seemed to hang in the air. "Why did we stop?" someone finally asked, their voice filled with anger and concern. Before Silas could say a word, Dave spoke up, his tone steady but carrying the weight of the unbelievable news he was about to deliver. "Gunther’s alive," Dave announced, his voice cutting through the tension. The group froze, disbelief painted on every face. Gunther...alive? But they had all seen him swallowed whole by the boulderback beast. It seemed impossible, a twisted joke of fate. But just as doubt began to settle, a large, familiar figure appeared on the horizon, making his way toward the truck. "Gunther!" Several voices called out, disbelief and relief tangled together as they saw him approach. Kim was beside him, his arm around Gunther’s shoulder, helping him forward with a careful but firm grip. Gunther looked at each and every one of the members. His shirt was torn in several places, and bruises was all over his skin. His jeans, though scratched, had withstood the worst of the damage. Despite the evident exhaustion, there was a smile on his face, it was wide, genuine, and full of relief. "Boy, am I glad to see you all," Gunther said, his voice strained but warm. He glanced around at the group, his eyes locking with each one of them. "I didn’t think things would end up this way, but I’m glad I’m still here to see you guys again." "I thought I wouldn’t see you again after that tortoise swallowed you up," one of the younger boys remarked, still in shock. "Yeah, me too," another added, shaking his head. But before the conversation could continue, Gunther let out a soft chuckle. "Well, they’re not tortoises," Gunther corrected, his expression serious but light-hearted. "They’re turtle-like beasts, much different from a tortoise. Tortoises are slow, right? But turtles, they may move slowly, but they can swallow their prey with impressive speed, whether it’s on land or in water. These beasts, well, they’re like an evolved, more dangerous version of that." The group exchanged looks of realization, slowly nodding as they processed Gunther’s words. Their attention turned to the girl who had brought up the tortoise analogy. "What? I thought it was a tortoise. Who knew there’s a turtle too!" She said and they all chuckled and laughed at this. But the main question bugged everyone’s mind, how was Gunther alive? How did he survived?
