Chapter 128: CH 128: A Bomb (WMR6)From his high vantage point, Dave watched the crowd with a cold, calculating stare. Despite Peter’s desperate shouts, despite the truth spilling from the mouths of the three men who once stood beside these people, the crowd still clung to denial. Only a few of them moved. But it was expected since after all, their loyalty ran deep towards the masked men who had saved and protected them. Their judgment had been compromised; blurred by gratitude, loyalty, and the illusion of protection. These people had trusted the masked men, followed them, even revered them. To them, the danger was Dave who stood before them. They couldn’t see the rot growing in their own midst. But Dave would make sure they did. He could have just walked away, left them to their own blindness, had it not been for Peter’s words about who Kim Hyun really was. Moreover, Dave was given a warning and a quest from the system. [A bomb has been set, rescue the people and prevent them from being killed] ’Just like before,’ he thought, his grip tightening on the rifle. ’He’s planning to do the same thing again.’ Kim Hyun wasn’t just spreading chaos, he was repeating it. And Dave couldn’t bear to see innocent lives get killed, so he was going to make sure he prevent any death from happening. "I’m not the type that like heroism, but I have no choice. I have to rescue my wives, so why not save some innocent people as well. Besides, with their beast taming powers, they would be a good addition to my faction." The civilians still didn’t understand what was going on. They stood in clusters, tense but loyal, unaware that the men they trusted were slowly encircling them like wolves. The masked men moved subtly, slipping behind the crowd, using them as cover, weaving through bodies as if they were nothing more than human shields. And the people let them, thinking they were trying to take down the enemy. Though, they still don’t understand why Peter, Jeff and Kurt had told them to get away from them. They still believed that the danger was Dave, who wouldn’t stop shooting at their protectors. Dave’s jaw clenched, his expression hardening. "Fine," he muttered under his breath. "If they can’t see the truth... I’ll just carve it out for them to see." He raised his rifle again. The weapon moved with practiced ease, as the barrel glide like a predator’s eye, scanning for weakness, for deception. From atop his massive Berad beast, he had the high ground. Every movement in the crowd below was visible to him, every flicker of fear, every shift of confusion. Dave’s finger hovered over the trigger. "No more warnings. No more levity." It was time to show them what they were truly standing beside. Through the chaos, his eyes locked on a masked man crouched behind a slender young civilian, barely more than a boy, his face pale and frozen in confusion. The masked man thought he was safe, as he nestled behind an innocent blood. But Dave could still see him, just enough of a profile, the glint of a blade, the edge of the black mask, peeking from over the boy’s shoulder. "They must think I can’t take the shot since they’re hiding behind those people," Dave muttered under his breath. A small smile ghosted across his lips. They thought hiding behind these people will shade and hide them from Dave. But they don’t who they’re messing with. The rifle whispered a soft click as Dave’s finger settled against the trigger. And then, a sharp crack tore through the air. The bullet ripped through the space between them in a heartbeat, slicing past the civilian by mere inches. The masked man’s head jerked back violently as the shot struck dead center between his eyes. His mask shattered in an instant, splintered into jagged fragments that flew into the air like shards of broken illusion. His body collapsed in a heap behind the startled boy, blood already soaking the ground beneath him. Gasps and shouts rippled through the onlookers as they witness the scene of another masked men ending up dead. The boy turned, slowly and shakily, his breath catching in his throat. His wide eyes locked onto the corpse now crumpled at his feet, blood pooling around the fragments of a shattered mask. For a long second, silence hung thick in the air, until the boy staggered backward, his expression shifting from shock to dawning horror. Others gathered near him, people who had once stood shoulder to shoulder with the masked man. As the light hit the unmasked face, recognition struck like a wave breaking against a seawall. Murmurs broke out. Gasps. Then words. "A...are you seeing what I’m seeing?" a man said, his voice rising in disbelief. "That’s... That’s Sebastian, isn’t it? The guy from the bombing..." A teenage girl stepped forward, her voice trembling. "It is. I remember him, his name stuck with me because it matched one of my favorite cartoon characters. He’s Sebastian. One of the criminals from the Westernmore attacks." Eyes widened around her. The name sent ripples through the crowd; Sebastian, the bomber. One of the key figures in the coordinated assault that turned three peaceful towns into smoldering graves just last month. The posters. The viral videos. The government-issued bounty. His picture had been placed everywhere. And now he lay dead at their feet, revealed and exposed as a predator hiding beneath the mask of a protector. Tension crackled like static as the realization began to spread, breaking the spell the masked men had cast for so long. The remaining masked fighters shifted uneasily. Their leader barked something sharp under his breath, and they began to move backpedaling, changing formation, attempting to retreat into the crowd again. But they were already too late. Another sharp crack echoed through the compound. A second masked man dropped. His body hit the ground with a dull thud, his mask splintered, fragments scattering across the dirt like spilled secrets. Gasps rang out again as the second face was revealed. Older, hardened, but unmistakable. People whispered his name. He was one of the twenty most wanted criminals in the region, his face printed on posters, splashed across social media warnings, burned into the minds of everybody in the city, due to how dangerous they were. The crowd recoiled. Their saviors were monsters. The ones who had given them purpose and power, but have been hiding behind their collective masks. And now, the veil was falling, as the bullet from Dave revealed their faces one at a time.
