Chapter 24: Ch 024: Group distributionSimbi and Dave stepped into the meeting room, joining the other executive members who were already seated and engaged in hushed conversations. As they entered, multiple gazes swung their way, and Dave felt a familiar sense of unease wash over him. Just like the first time he had walked into a room full of strangers, he sensed that all eyes were on him, their gazes lingering on his face as if trying to read his thoughts. It was a strange, discomforting feeling, but he steeled himself to endure it, at least for the time being. Simbi, seemingly oblivious to the attention, led him to an empty seat at the back of the room, where the two of them sat together, nestled in the relative anonymity of the rear row. Dave felt a twinge of gratitude toward Simbi; with her by his side, the number of curious glances he would receive might decrease, allowing him to blend in more easily. It seemed that Simbi, too, had noticed the glances and had purposely chosen the back seat, perhaps to spare Dave the discomfort of being the center of attention. As Dave settled into his seat, he took stock of the room, his eyes scanning the familiar faces of the executive members. However, he couldn’t help but notice the absence of some people, particularly those he had interacted with in the past few hours. Anthony, the leader of the base, was noticeably absent, and Dave couldn’t help but wonder if he was running late or attending to some urgent matter. Tasha’s absence, on the other hand, didn’t come as a surprise to Dave. Given her recent outburst, it was understandable that she might want to avoid the meeting, or at least, lay low for a while. Her behavior had been erratic, to say the least, and Dave suspected that she might be feeling embarrassed or vulnerable after her emotional display. Gunther, the third absent member, was someone Dave hadn’t had much interaction with, but he seemed like an important part of the executive team. His reserved demeanor and thoughtful expressions had left a positive impression on Dave, who wondered what insights Gunther might bring to the meeting. Just as Dave was starting to feel a bit concerned about the absent members, the door swung open, and a group of people walked in. To Dave’s relief, Anthony and Gunther were among them, and they quickly took their places at the front of the room. Anthony, in particular, seemed to exude an air of confidence and authority as he made his way to the whiteboard, where he began to set up his presentation. With a few swift motions, Anthony started hanging up cardboard sheets and papers, creating a makeshift display that seemed to be a mix of notes, diagrams, and maps. He scribbled some key phrases on the board, using a marker that squeaked as he wrote. The sound was familiar, and Dave found himself watching with interest as Anthony’s presentation began to take shape. "Alright, all done," Anthony announced, clapping his hands twice to signal the completion of his preparations. With a confident smile, he turned to face the members, his eyes scanning the room to ensure he had everyone’s attention. "For tomorrow’s expedition, we’ll be dividing into a separate group, distinct from the original main group. We have a vast amount of ground to cover, and it’s essential we work efficiently." Anthony paused, surveying the room before launching into the details of the plan. "First, we need to visit the restaurant on Willow’s street. We’ve received intel that they might have some useful supplies, and we need to investigate." He gestured to a map on the board, pointing out the location. "Secondly, we’re running low on clothes, so we’ll be sending two groups to shopping malls in different areas. We need to stock up on essentials, especially warm clothing and sturdy footwear." Anthony’s expression turned serious as he addressed the next point. "Thirdly, our gas supplies are dwindling rapidly. We need someone to take a large bus to fill up our gas cans. This is a critical task, as we can’t afford to run out of fuel." He glanced around the room, his eyes locking onto several members. "I’m counting on you to get this done efficiently." The room was silent, with all eyes fixed on Anthony as he outlined the next task. "Another crucial mission requires bravery and stealth. We need a team to head to the big hospital and gather more medical supplies. The details of what you’ll be collecting will be handed to you shortly. This is a high-risk task, but it’s essential to our survival." Anthony’s voice dropped to a low tone, his words measured and deliberate. "And finally, we have a reconnaissance mission. Gunther will lead a team to a specific location, where you’ll be spying on a group suspected of hiding in the area. Listen carefully: do not engage with them, and do not make your presence known. Your sole objective is to gather intelligence and report back to us. Do you understand?" The room erupted into a chorus of nods, with every member acknowledging Anthony’s instructions. The air was thick with anticipation, and Dave could sense the weight of responsibility settling onto the shoulders of each team member. "Great, for that last task, you guys are to meet up at TT junction after completing your individual tasks," Anthony explained, his eyes scanning the room to ensure everyone understood. "If a certain group hasn’t returned within the given time frame, the others are to track them down to ensure their safety. Once everyone has completed their tasks, you’ll all meet at TT junction and head out together for the final mission." Gunther stepped forward, distributing sheets of paper with the names of members and the places they’ll be heading to. When Dave received his paper, he glanced down to see that he’d be heading to the restaurant on Willow’s street, along with two other members: a male and a female. Simbi peered over at his paper, her eyes widening slightly. "Oh, you got the restaurant. I got the hospital." Dave’s brow furrowed in concern. "Isn’t that dangerous?" he asked Simbi. "Most beasts would have traced the scent of blood to that area, so they must be rampant over there." Simbi’s expression turned serious. "Yeah, but the restaurant isn’t safe either. There’s a chance you’ll encounter a group of survivors who might not be willing to let you in. Food is scarce, and they won’t just allow anyone to take their supplies." Chris, who had been quietly observing their conversation, chimed in. "Believe me, everywhere is a risk. Not during an apocalypse, but in general." He flashed a wry smile. "Where’d you get assigned?" Simbi asked him. "The mall," Chris replied, prompting Simbi’s face to contort in a mock pout. "Easy..." she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Chris chuckled. "No way, there’s danger lurking around every corner. No place is easy or safe." Ella, who had been listening in on their conversation, joined in. "Says the one who got the easy assignment," she teased, glancing at Dave. "Even Dave didn’t get an easy one. We’re both stuck with the scary restaurant on Willow’s street." Simbi’s eyes widened in surprise. "Wait, you guys are going to the same place?" Ella nodded, and Dave realized that Ella was indeed one of the team members assigned to the restaurant mission, along with a male companion. "Lucky," Simbi said, pouting again. "I’m stuck with Tasha and two more adults." Ella chuckled. "Haha, your future in-law." Simbi’s eyes flashed with mock warning. "Don’t you dare say that again. I will never be her in-law." She shot Dave a glance, her expression softening slightly before she looked away. "I guess the hospital is indeed a high-risk zone, considering they’ve assigned four people to that group," Dave said, his brow furrowed in concern. Simbi chuckled nervously in agreement, her eyes darting around the room as if searching for potential escape routes. After a few more explanations and final instructions from Anthony and Gunther, the meeting drew to a close. The leaders bid the group goodnight, emphasizing the importance of getting a good rest before the challenging expedition ahead. With that, the members began to disperse, heading off to their respective quarters to prepare for the next day. Since the initial sleeping area assigned to Dave was still bustling with people eager to meet with him, the executives had arranged for him to sleep in a different location. This new quarters was typically reserved for some of the executive members, and Dave felt a sense of gratitude for the consideration. After bidding Simbi and Ella goodnight, as they headed off to their own quarters, Dave made his way to his assigned bed. He was exhausted, both physically and mentally from the events of the day. As he lay down, he couldn’t even muster the energy to check the system message that kept popping up above his face. The message flashed repeatedly, its words blurring together as Dave’s eyelids grew heavy. [You have exceeded a day without completing your daily quest. You will now face the penalty of your actions] Dave’s mind registered the warning, but his body was too worn out to respond. With a soft sigh, he let sleep claim him, the system message still flashing ominously above his face.
