Chapter 31: CH 031: Fighting as a team (Mass release 2)The beasts were closing in, their eyes gleaming with hunger as they moved in slow, deliberate steps. The ground trembled under the weight of their massive bodies, their jagged teeth bared in snarls that sent shivers down everyone’s spine. Gunther’s hand tightened around the hilt of his large sword, the blade glinting ominously in the fading light. Its curved edge gleamed, promising a swift end to any creature unlucky enough to be in its path. With a deep breath, he unsheathed the weapon in one fluid motion, the sharp sound of metal scraping against the sheath echoing in the tense silence. His eyes flickered to the others, who were already preparing their own weapons. Some drew axes, others pulled out cutlasses, and a few checked their guns, all of them fully aware of the danger ahead. They had no choice now, they had to fight. "Everyone, attack!" Gunther’s voice rang out, authoritative and commanding. His words sparked an immediate response from the group. Without hesitation, they charged in and Dave had also found himself moving with them, his heart pounding in his chest. The weight of the situation was heavy in the pit of his stomach. This wasn’t just a training exercise, it was real, and they were facing creatures unlike anything they’d encountered before. Yet, despite the fear bubbling in his chest, he couldn’t deny the adrenaline coursing through his veins. He was in this now, and there was no turning back. ’Heck, is this how it feels as an ordinary human? Is this how the others had felt during all of their expeditions? I must say, they are really brave. I don’t thinkv Chris, who had fallen into step beside Dave, glanced at him and spoke in a low voice, as if trying to steady the others. "Although they are beasts, they don’t seem too dangerous. Look at their slow movements, we should be able to take out the majority of them without too much trouble." His words were meant to reassure, and in a way, they did. The beasts weren’t charging at them with wild, unpredictable speed. Instead, they moved like slow, lumbering giants, their claws scraping against the earth as they inched forward. It made them seem less terrifying, almost manageable, despite their size and strength. Gunther was the first to make his move, his sword slicing through the air with a practiced grace. The edge of his blade gleamed as it struck one of the beasts, cutting through its neck like butter. There was a sickening sound as the blade met the creature’s neck, severing it in one swift strike. The head fell to the ground with a dull thud, the body collapsing shortly after. A spray of dark blood splattered across the dirt, marking the beast’s swift demise. "Let’s deal with these annoying little monsters!" The others followed suit, their weapons flashing as they attacked from all sides. Chris and the others moved quickly, targeting the creatures from behind. It was as if they had practiced this before. Their movements was fluid and synchronized, each of their strike was landing with precision. While Gunther’s group took the brunt of the assault from the front, their weapons finding the weak points of the beasts, the necks especially, where the thick muscle seemed to give way the easiest, the others worked swiftly to flank them. The first few beasts dropped quickly, their bodies collapsing in a heap, but there were still hundreds more. The air filled with the sounds of battle, grunts of exertion, the sharp clang of metal on beast hide, and the occasional roar of a creature in pain. Dave swung one of his weapon, a heavy makeshift axe at the nearest beast, his hands trembling with the force of the blow. He felt it connect, the axe embedding itself in the beast’s side. The creature let out a guttural growl, spinning in place to face him, but Dave didn’t falter. He pulled the axe free and swung again, this time aiming for the creature’s throat. It wasn’t easy, nothing about this was, but he felt the rush of adrenaline as his axe finally cleaved through the beast’s neck. It could be stated that he’s acting solely on his fear of death, hence the adrenaline. The creature’s body crumpled to the ground, its lifeless eyes staring up at the sky. Beside him, Simbi was already engaged in her own fight, moving with speed and efficiency as she dispatched one beast after another. The air around them was thick with the scent of blood and the sound of bones cracking under the weight of their strikes. Despite the chaos, there was a rhythm to it, a strange harmony in the way they worked together to take down their foes. Gunther’s eyes remained locked on the advancing beasts, as he calculated his next moves. They couldn’t afford to let their guard down. With each beast they took down, another seemed to take its place, the line of attackers seemingly endless. Yet, with every strike, with every beast they brought down, their confidence grew. The slow-moving creatures were formidable, yes, but they were far from invincible. And if they kept their wits about them, they just might make it through this battle alive. As the beasts closed in, their snarls growing louder and more frantic, Dave tightened his grip on his axe and braced himself for the next wave. The fight had only just begun, but for the first time since the punishment started, he felt a glimmer of hope, maybe, just maybe, they could win this. The battle raged around Dave, a chaotic blur of movement and noise. He had thrown himself into the fray, as he switched from his axe to his sword. This time, swinging and slashing through beast after beast with precision. Even though he didn’t have his usual strength or speed, the sword seemed to be aiding him so much in the fight. With its light weight and sharp blade, he had been able to fair even much more better than when he was using the axe. The sword was a gift from Anthony before he left the casino base, he had handed it to him, entrusting him to help ensure everyone’s safety. It was a short sword, scarred and worn from past battles in far-off lands, particularly Japan. The hilt was smooth, well-worn by the hands of the previous owners, and though it looked simple at first glance, it had a certain elegance to it. Its blade was slender, sharp, and perfectly balanced, an ideal weapon for Dave in the heat of a battle. Dave found himself grateful for it now. The weapon, despite its age, was lightweight and responsive, making it easy for him to weave through the mob of beasts around him. With every swing, the sword danced through the air, cutting down a creature with each precise strike. The beasts were large, but they were slow, lumbering, and that made them easy targets when approached with the right technique. His blade slashed across a creature’s throat, sending a spray of dark blood into the air before the beast’s body crumpled to the ground in a heap. For the moment, Dave felt like he was in control. His mind, clouded by fear at first, had settled into a rhythm. Strike, block, move, each move felt natural, almost instinctual. He was able to keep his head above the storm of chaos unfolding around him. But as the battle wore on, not only him, but the confidence that everyone had, has began to waver. The numbers of beasts were overwhelming, far greater than he had anticipated. While he and the others had been successful in taking down the initial group, the next wave had arrived, and it was clear that the fight was far from over.
