Chapter 9 - Summoners Class Choice After all the students had taken a single handbook, Sergeant Henry wished them the best of luck before leaving the classroom, allowing them the freedom to explore and choose classes that suited them the most. As they flipped through the handbook, many students quickly figured out their preferences and registered their choices using their academy phones. Once this task was completed, they had the entire day to themselves, free to do whatever they pleased. However, Kairos and his friends took a different approach. Instead of making immediate selections, they decided to take a tour of the academy, using the handbook as a guide to explore their options thoroughly before making a decision. Their first stop was the classroom for Summons Study. It was an enormous hall, resembling a grand library, filled with towering bookshelves lined with thick, ancient tomes. The scent of old paper filled the air, and rows of desks and chairs occupied a section of the room, creating a studious atmosphere. The thought of spending hours buried in books every day made the boys feel lightheaded. Reading was not for the weak. After glancing at each other, they unanimously agreed that none of them would be selecting this class. With that decision made, they proceeded to the next location. The next stop was the Summons Combat Class. Unlike the previous class, this one was a vast metallic arena with multiple numbered platforms similar to the one they had been tested on upon entering the academy. The moment they stepped inside, a palpable energy filled the air as students engaged in combat, testing their summons against one another. Darnell's eyes lit up with excitement at the sight. The opportunity to engage in battles with other summons was too good to pass up. He could barely contain himself. Carlos, though equally interested, maintained his calm demeanor. Without a second thought, he unlocked his phone and selected the class. Darnell followed suit without hesitation, his eagerness plain to see. However, when they turned to Kairos, they noticed that he hadn't even taken his phone out. "What? Aren't you going to pick this? You have one of the strongest summons! This should be your top priority! And besides, we haven't had our rematch yet!" Darnell exclaimed, trying to persuade Kairos to choose the class. But Kairos simply shook his head, glancing at the number of students crowded around the battle platforms. "And who gave you the idea that I even want a rematch?" His voice was cold, cutting through Darnell's enthusiasm. "I'd rather check out all the classes before making a decision. Besides, I have more important things to learn than just fighting in a summon battle class." His words hit Darnell like a slap, silencing him. With that, they moved on to the next class. The Summoner Martial Arts Training class was similar in size to the combat class, but instead of battle platforms, there were multiple weapons neatly stacked in racks. Some of them looked ancient, radiating an aura of wisdom, while others were so well-crafted that they almost seemed divine. There was no hesitation this time. Without a word, all three of them selected this class. The energy within the room was contagious. Many students had already picked this option, their excitement barely contained as they discussed what kind of training they might receive. "Well, since we've already chosen our classes, I'll be heading out to explore the academy on my own," Darnell said with a casual wave. There was a slight edge to his tone, a lingering bitterness from Kairos' blunt words earlier. He didn't wait for a response before walking away. Carlos, as usual, was silent. He simply gave a thumbs-up before turning on his heels and leaving without another word. Kairos didn't mind. If anything, he welcomed the silence. It's not like we're friends or anything, he thought to himself. Just because they're nice doesn't mean they're good people. With that, he continued walking, making his way to the last class on the list. The Environment Survival Class. This class was located in one of the quieter areas of the academy. The hallway leading to it was almost empty, and by the time Kairos reached the classroom, he found only one other person standing there. A girl. She was staring into the room through the massive windows, seemingly lost in thought. Kairos stepped beside her and peered inside. Unlike the other classes, this one was filled with various advanced machines and equipment, as well as a few shelves stocked with books and supplies. It wasn't as grand as the library-like Summons Study class, but it had an air of importance that few would recognize. Most students would probably overlook this class. Why waste time learning about environmental survival when summon battles existed? The majority would choose combat over survival, and to them, it was the obvious choice. But to Kairos, it was different. He knew the pain of going days without food, of shivering through cold nights with no shelter, of falling ill without access to even the most basic remedies. He had lived through suffering that could have been avoided if only he had the knowledge. In a world at war, this skill was just as valuable as combat. His eyes flickered toward the girl beside him. She had long brown hair—perhaps even too long, as it covered most of her face, concealing her features and giving her an eerie, almost ghost-like appearance. Yet, unlike the others, she was also selecting this class. Kairos watched as she pulled out her phone and registered Environment Survival as her second choice. His eyes trailed downward instinctively, and before he could stop himself, he blurted out his thoughts. "Man, they're huge." The words had slipped out before he even realized it. There was no regret in his tone, no hesitation. The girl let out a small gasp but remained silent. Kairos smirked, unfazed. "You should really consider cutting some of your hair," he remarked. "You look like a ghost that just crawled out of the underworld. Trust me, it'd make you look a lot more decent and presentable." Still, she didn't reply. He shrugged and turned to leave after selecting his class. But then— A firm yet unexpectedly gentle grasp wrapped around his wrist, stopping him in his tracks. Her grip was surprisingly tight. "Your summon... it's incomplete." Her voice was soft, almost soothing, but her words were strange. Kairos stiffened. His eyes narrowed as he turned back to her. "It's failed, not incomplete." She didn't move. Though her face was still mostly hidden, Kairos caught a glimpse of her eyes—glowing emeralds, piercing through the veil of her hair like something unnatural. His instincts flared. Okay, scratch the ghost part. She's weird. Probably insane. And yet, despite her eerie presence, there was something else. Standing this close to her, he didn't feel threatened. Instead, he felt... calm. As if their souls were intertwining in a way he couldn't explain. "I am Kaela Voss." Her grip loosened, and a small, crooked smile formed on her lips. Kairos reciprocated with a smirk of his own. "Kairos Veyl..." he introduced himself before thinking, Crazy girl. With a simple wave, she turned and disappeared down the hall without another word. Kairos watched her go, his mind racing. Who exactly is she?
