Chapter 141: Half breed summoner [Mass release 3/4] "What faction would you join if you were strong enough to choose?" the young girl asked in a low, curious tone, gently tugging on the sleeve of her brother’s shirt. Young Mike, still merely a boy, blinked in confusion at her question. He tilted his head, placing a small hand beneath his chin as he pondered. Faction, she had said. He scrunched his nose, his lips pursing in deep thought. After a moment, he finally replied, "I guess I’d want to join the Thorne family... or maybe..." He leaned in closer, bringing his face to her ear and whispering quietly, "But the forbidden faction... the one no one talks about... that’s my favorite." Lyza tilted her head, visibly confused. Why would her brother want to join a faction that didn’t officially exist? A myth, a bedtime story at best. They had both only heard of it from their grandfather, an old, worn-out man whose mind seemed to teeter between fantasy and reality. He had once claimed to have served the Forbidden Faction before retiring. He described it with awe—a mysterious family shrouded in shadow, harboring power beyond comprehension. Joining them, he had said, was like touching the stars: rare, majestic, and nearly impossible. Yet those who did, became wealthy beyond imagination. More than that—they became the strongest. To Mike, who had heard these tales as a child, it was the stuff dreams were made of. "It’s just a story," Lyza muttered, a faint smile tugging at her lips. But Mike shook his head slowly, eyes distant. "I really doubt that. I believe that’s where Mum and Dad are. They must be waiting for us... waiting for us to get strong enough to join them in the Forbidden Family." Lyza glanced down at their hands, noticing how tightly Mike was now gripping hers. He tried to act strong, his expression calm, but his hand trembled slightly. The desire to see their parents again—she could feel it pulsing through him. Lyza leaned her head gently against his shoulder and smiled. "I can’t wait to meet Mum and Dad again." It was wild. A shared fantasy—an impossible dream born out of hope, pain, and longing. But the two siblings believed it with all their hearts. They clung to it. It was the only thing they had left. They knew their parents weren’t dead. They believed it. They had to believe it. But now... Lyza’s breath began to quicken, her chest rising and falling with visible effort. Her eyes dropped down to her own heart, beating wildly beneath her ribs. Then she looked to Mike. Her vision blurred. She could no longer focus. Her knees buckled. She gasped, trying to suck in air as though her lungs were collapsing in on themselves. She was dying. ’I’m sorry, brother... looks like I won’t be seeing Mum and Dad after all... so please... please... help me tell them... I love...’ Her voice faded, body going limp in Mike’s arms as life drained from her eyes. She was gone. Mike stared in disbelief, his body frozen in place. "Lyza!" he screamed, stumbling forward to attack the monster who had done this—Carlos—but his legs... they wouldn’t move. They trembled violently beneath him, locked in place. His body refused to obey. It wasn’t just fear—it was sorrow. A wave of loss so heavy it crushed his will entirely. ’Move! Move!’ he screamed within, tears now pouring freely from his eyes. ’You made a promise! You said you’d keep her safe! You said you’d protect her!’ "ARRRGHHHHH!" His scream shattered the air as memories came flooding back—painful, vivid, and all-consuming. The last time he’d seen his parents... he remembered it clearly. Every detail etched into his mind like a scar. His mother’s tear-streaked face. His father’s solemn eyes as he whispered to Mike, telling him they had to leave. Telling him to protect his sister. Telling him to get strong. Telling him to join the Forbidden Faction... when the time came. And he had promised. I promised them! I told them we’d be there... together. But now... Lyza’s body hit the ground with a dull thud. Carlos, smirking coldly, withdrew his bloodied hand from her chest and casually tossed her still-beating heart aside. He looked down at Mike with detached cruelty. "Now... your turn." There was no hesitation in Carlos’ movement. His gaze locked onto Mike with predatory focus as he lunged forward. Mike watched helplessly, the same hand that ended his sister’s life now racing toward him with blinding speed. He couldn’t react. He couldn’t even scream. It was pain. Pure, raw pain. Carlos’ hand pierced through his gut, blood erupting in all directions, the sickening sound of flesh tearing ringing in his ears. This... is my end... he thought. Dying without even avenging her. An unbefitting end... ’No! This is bullshit!—’ SPLOOSH! The blow had landed. But something was off. Carlos’ hand had indeed hit flesh... but not Mike’s. Rivet, who had been watching from a distance, stood frozen. His eyes bulged in horror as he tried to erase what he’d just witnessed. But he couldn’t. The image was burned into his mind. He wanted to move, to help. He should have moved. But he couldn’t. A faction could not interfere with another’s mission. That was law. To do so would ignite war. It was the only thing that kept the fragile peace. And yet... Kairos’ pleading eyes kept glancing toward him, silently begging him to do something. Rivet looked away. He had to watch. He had to punish himself with the sight. Carlos grinned, satisfied. Another one had stepped in. Another fool, sacrificing himself for Mike. He found it amusing. "How many people are going to throw their lives away for this insignificant idiot?" Carlos mused aloud, a twisted smile spreading across his face. "At least this time, it’s you I get to kill." Carlos twisted his hand inside the new victim’s gut, expecting a cry of agony. But Ravin, the one who had intercepted the blow, remained still. And then... he grinned. Mike stared at the bloodied figure in front of him. His lips trembled. "W—why? Why did you save me?" Ravin laughed, coughing up blood as he did. "What are friends for?" Mike’s heart lurched. Friends? He had never once considered Ravin a friend. He hated the man. Ravin had attacked the academy, experimented on him, forced him into missions he despised. But now... Ravin was dying in front of him. And he had done it to protect him. The memories started to flash—every word, every action. Suddenly, things made sense. He understood now. "You understand now, don’t you?" Ravin whispered, still smirking. "You understand my hate... for the factions, for the higher-ups who play God... You understand why I kept you alive. Why I did what I did." He coughed again, blood trailing down his chin. "Now you understand what I meant... about villains and heroes..." Carlos sneered. "When are you going to drop dead?" he asked, his tone venomous. But Ravin ignored him. He turned his gaze to Rivet Thorne in the distance. "I don’t have much time," he said, voice cracking, "but you need to know something. I’ve seen the future... twenty-nine times." A hush fell over the battlefield. "I am from the Thorne family," Ravin continued, eyes still fixed on Rivet. "Not a full descendant, no... a crossbreed. From your faction... and the Forbidden Faction." Gasps rang out. Even Carlos faltered for a moment, eyes widening.
