Chapter 18 - Summoners Rematch Once everyone had taken a single textbook, they each moved to a designated platform to begin practicing the first technique, just as Sergeant Lloyd had instructed. The first step wasn't the Echo Walk, as many had expected, but rather a closely related technique known as the Instinct Swap. A powerful ability that channeled the raw instinct of the Summon into the Summoner—not primarily for dodging, but to heighten reflexes and create blindingly fast attacks that could barely be followed by the naked eye. Despite the number of platforms stretching across the massive training hall—each one occupied by a student eagerly attempting the technique—Sergeant Lloyd took his time moving from platform to platform, closely observing how each individual was faring. Many students struggled to grasp the underlying concept. Whenever he saw someone stuck, Lloyd would offer subtle but effective guidance. His pointers often transformed clumsy attempts into more refined performances before he silently moved on to the next. On one of the far platforms stood Kairos, frustration already creeping into his posture. He did his best to follow the instructions laid out in the textbook, trying to maintain a solid stance while activating his integration—but it was all too unfamiliar to him. "Instinct Swap!" He yelled, stomping a foot forward and unleashing a series of sharp punches into the air. But it was a failure. The punches were no doubt enhanced by the integration, faster and stronger than a normal human's—but they lacked the instinctual sharpness the textbook emphasized. "You are doing it all wrong." Sergeant Lloyd's voice rang out, sharp as a whip. He stepped up onto Kairos' platform, a look of disappointment etched across his face. "Many have already grasped at least fifty percent of the technique, but you? You're just swinging stupidly, kid." Kairos' jaw tightened as he frowned. "I know!" He straightened his stance again, breathing deeply. 'I don't need a partial instructor to help me... I'll get it eventually...' Lloyd didn't respond immediately. He folded his arms and silently watched as Kairos made another attempt—and failed again. The Sergeant sighed and walked up, placing a firm hand on Kairos' head in a surprisingly gentle gesture. "You have a very strong integration—maybe even stronger than most here. But if you keep wasting your time, talent won't save you. So listen carefully, kid." Kairos blinked, startled. "I'll show you the skill myself—and reveal the secrets to achieving it." Without waiting, Sergeant Lloyd moved to the center of the platform. His stance was wide, grounded, unwavering—radiating confidence. "First," he began, "you have to be confident in your stance. Make it wide—not just for stability, but so that you can shift backward even when under attack and still execute the technique. That's the reason for the wide base." "Secondly... What you must understand about Feral Sync Arts is this: it's not really you performing the technique. You're letting your beast take partial control of your body. You're allowing its instinct to guide your movements, to strike, to attack—like so..." With a sharp exhale, Sergeant Lloyd lunged forward. "Instinct Swap!" His fists moved like lightning. Each punch cleaved through the air, generating crackling bursts that rippled outward as though space itself was shattering around them. Then he stood upright and faced Kairos again with a subtle smile. "Is that so hard to understand?" Kairos stared, wide-eyed. 'He broke it down so easily... His explanation is even better than the textbook.' "Thank you." The words came quietly. It was strange. He had seen Sergeant Lloyd help others with brief advice, but never had the man performed the technique himself. Never had he taken this much time with someone. 'Could it be... he feels guilty about letting Rivet beat me up?' Kairos' thoughts ran deep, almost too deep to catch Lloyd's next words. "Come on, try yours," the Sergeant said, waving him forward. Kairos nodded. Straightening his posture, he took a deep breath. He began to recall each instruction Lloyd had given—envisioning the stance, the confidence, the surrender of control to his Summon. [Shadow Wolf intellect has grasped the concept] Kairos felt something stir within him, as though his blood had synced with another presence. He stamped his foot and lunged forward. "Instinct Swap!" He roared, throwing a flurry of punches into the air. They weren't as fast as Sergeant Lloyd's—but they carried weight, precision, and force. Each strike parted the air, the energy of his blows resonating with raw instinct. Sergeant Lloyd's mouth opened slightly in disbelief. "What the—" 'This kid... Just like when he fought Rivet. He learns techniques so fast, even without fully realizing it himself.' His awe twisted into a proud smirk. "I guess this is the ability of a LEGENDARY SUMMON... Good job, Kairos. You pass." With that, Lloyd turned and walked off toward another student. Kairos stood silently, his arms slowly lowering as he absorbed what had just happened. 'Did I really just do the technique? Wow... thank you, Shadow Wolf.' Still stunned but excited, Kairos continued to practice. Every repetition felt smoother than the last, more instinctual. It was no longer a struggle, but a flow—a bond between Summon and Summoner. An hour passed. Eventually, all students had gained some familiarity with the technique. At Sergeant Lloyd's command, they stepped off their platforms and gathered once more. "Now that we are done learning the first technique," Sergeant Lloyd announced, his voice echoing across the room, "you will have to learn the remaining techniques on your own, during your free time. However..." He paused, scanning the eager faces. "...since everyone here is learning the same thing, remember this: your technique must evolve. Tweak it to your own taste. Make it unique. Make it unpredictable." The students nodded, their spirits reignited. "Now—get into pairs of two. We'll have our usual sparring matches." Chaos broke loose as students scrambled to find partners. Kairos, however, wasn't interested in sparring his friends. He had already decided who he wanted to fight. Darnell, too, broke away from Carlos, his eyes locked on Rayla. The excitement of facing a faction member surged through him like fire. Carlos, calm and composed, simply waited. He knew fate would bring his opponent to him. Kairos shoved past students, many of whom tried to challenge him. After Rivet's public beatdown, they were confident they could best him too. But Kairos ignored them, moving like a man with purpose. He wasn't here for them. He was here for him. And then—he saw him. Rivet stood alone, a smug grin spreading across his face. Kairos looked around him. He had no partner. "I see you have no one to fight," Kairos said. Rivet laughed. "I had a blind thought you'd show up... so I kept the spot warm for you." Kairos grinned back, the fire in his eyes igniting. 'This time, I'll beat the arrogance out of you, brat.'
