Chapter 140: Not the right Summoner [mass release 2/4] Kairos felt his legs buckle beneath him. Blood seeped from the fresh wound in his stomach, the blade still embedded there, his fingers trembling with every movement. His breathing grew shallow, each gasp harder than the last. The loss of blood and his already depleting stamina took a heavy toll on his battered body. ’Not again... Fuck, do I have a habit of being stabbed?’ Kairos groaned internally, a grimace etching across his face. His legs finally gave in, and he collapsed onto the ground with a heavy thud. The metallic clatter of the blade echoed faintly as it slipped from Mike’s trembling hand. He stood frozen, staring at Kairos in disbelief. His breath came in short, panicked bursts, and he tried—desperately—to hide the tremble in his hands. "I did the right thing... He needed to die... Right?" he whispered to himself, attempting to find reassurance in the act he had just committed. But the weight of what he had done pressed down on him harder than he had expected. Stabbing Kairos had not brought relief or justice—it had only deepened the pit of despair and trauma inside him. Standing nearby, Ravin Elteth calmly slid his hands into the pockets of his long coat, his eyes surveying the scene with eerie indifference. "I expected a more deliberate attack," he said smoothly, as if speaking of a mere inconvenience, "but I’m sure that served its purpose." The air thickened with tension. Carlos stiffened in shock, his eyes narrowing in fury as he turned from Kairos to Mike, then to Ravin with a glare that could melt iron. Rivet stood frozen beside him, teeth clenched tightly, fists curled as if ready to strike—but he kept his calm, though barely. "How are you able to predict this far ahead? Everything... it’s all happening too perfectly for you," Rivet said, his voice laced with suspicion. "Why is that?" He didn’t care about Kairos being stabbed—not really. What bothered him was that this entire event contradicted what he had foreseen. As a Thorne, someone who could glimpse into the future, he knew this was not the way things were supposed to go. Someone had changed the outcome. But how? Unless... ’Unless someone else can also see the future... But that should be impossible. That ability only exists within the Thorne family...’ Carlos stepped forward, his expression hardening. "It’s just all too perfect and comfortable," he said coldly. "You anticipated our arrival—at the Academy, and even here. You’ve been one step ahead every time. It’s almost like... you can see the future." Ravin simply smiled. That smug grin on his face made Carlos’s blood boil. Carlos gritted his teeth and turned to face Mike again, who was still frozen in place, horror etched onto his face. "You!" he snarled, balling his fists tightly. Sparks of electricity-like energy began crackling around his knuckles, dancing up his arms with a furious intensity. "I’ll kill you first!" In an instant, Carlos lunged forward. Just three thunderous steps and he was in front of Mike, fist flying straight for the boy’s chest like a missile. Mike barely managed to jump back, avoiding the punch by mere inches. But even that slight movement made his lungs seize up, and goosebumps formed across his skin. ’Did he miss on purpose? No...’ Mike thought, eyes wide. ’He’s brimming with killing intent. There’s no way he held back. But then... why am I still alive?’ The bull-like aura surrounding Carlos should have paralyzed him, and yet somehow Mike had moved. Barely. Carlos snarled and stamped his foot into the ground, sending a small shockwave across the terrain. With swift, brutal precision, he flung another fist at Mike—this time, aiming for his face. ’Too fast!’ Mike’s heart pounded violently in his chest. He had no time to dodge. All he could do was raise his arms to block. The impact was thunderous. Carlos’s fist collided with Mike’s forearms, and the bones cracked audibly beneath the force. Mike was thrown backwards, staggering as he cried out in pain. ’My arms... It feels like they’re disconnected. The pain is everywhere—unbearable. I’m trying to think of a way out... but it’s happening so fast. Too fast—maybe this is it...’ Death seemed like the only outcome now. Carlos took a step forward, his eyes cold and devoid of hesitation. His left fist pulled back, a dark, shadowy energy now coursing around it instead of the usual electric glow. This punch was different. More focused. More precise. It was a killing blow—aimed straight for Mike’s gut. Mike could barely move. Barely breathe. And then— Out of nowhere, a blur shot between them, grabbing Carlos’s wrist at the last second and halting the deadly punch mid-air. It was Kairos. "Don’t do it!" Kairos yelled, his voice raw and desperate as he fought to restrain Carlos, even in his bloodied, weakened state. Mike’s eyes widened in disbelief. Guilt tore through his chest like a blade. ’I stabbed him... And still, he saved me...’ But his instincts screamed at him—he had to run. Mike turned and broke into a sprint, adrenaline pushing him past the pain. Yet even then, he knew it was futile. He was only human. And humans were slow—especially compared to summoners. Carlos’s fury boiled over. "What the hell are you doing?!" he roared, driving his elbow into Kairos’s face with such force that a loud crack echoed across the battlefield. Kairos was sent flying, collapsing to the ground, blood dripping from his nose and mouth. "Do not interfere with my mission," Carlos snarled. And then Kairos remembered. Carlos wasn’t himself. He was under direct orders—orders to eliminate Ravin, and anyone aiding him. Mike included. "Remember when I told you I can’t disobey my family..." Carlos muttered darkly, his voice heavy with restraint. The memory hit Kairos like a dagger to the heart. There was no stopping him now. Carlos burst into motion again. Within seconds, he was right behind Mike, launching the same killing strike as before, dark energy coiled around his fist. Mike didn’t even see it coming. SPLOOSH! A scream tore through the air—raw, high-pitched, and blood-curdling. "AHHHHHHHHH!!!" Everyone froze. The battlefield fell silent. Carlos’s fist had pierced clean through flesh—straight through the chest and out the back. It was a lethal strike. Even a summoner couldn’t survive that. But... Mike wasn’t the one hit. He lay face-down on the ground, stunned but alive. Gasping for breath. How? He looked up slowly. "Mike..." The voice was faint, trembling. His heart sank. He knew that voice. Slowly, painfully, he pushed himself up into a kneeling position, blood still dripping from his arms. Then he turned around. His face went pale. Under the haunting glow of the moon stood Carlos... and a girl. A girl who had pushed Mike out of the way. A girl who now stood with Carlos’s hand buried deep through her chest, his arm covered in blood. Her body trembled, her breath shallow. She was young. Not tall. But her presence radiated warmth and care. And now— Her heart, still faintly beating, was cradled in the ruthless grip of Carlos. "No... no, no, no..." Mike whispered, his lips quivering, eyes wide in disbelief. The girl looked up at him. Her large, pale-blue eyes glistened with unshed tears. "You protected me for so long..." she whispered, her voice so soft, so broken. "Now... I’ll protect you... You—brother..." A soft exhale. Her head fell forward. Still. Unmoving. Dead. It was Lyza. His sister. His world shattered. "AAAAAHHHHHHH!!! AAAAAHHHHHH!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!" Mike’s scream split through the air like a jagged blade, tearing into every soul on the battlefield. His veins bulged, his face contorted in anguish, his soul seemingly ripped from his chest. His sister... The last person he cared about. The reason he lived was Gone.
