Chapter 17 - Summoners Training, a few martial arts Kairos' question had come with no answer. There was nothing from the once-audible voice—only the shadow hound, which stepped closer and gently rubbed its dark mane against his leg. [Shadow Hound... Wanna play...] It was strange enough hearing the voice of his summon, but what struck Kairos even harder was the intelligence behind the words. His summon wasn't just mimicking speech—it was communicating. 'Oh my God, what is happening...' Kairos calmed his rising anxiety and placed a hand beneath his chin, thinking through the situation as carefully as possible. So this was what the voice had meant by Growth. Thanks to Sergeant Henry's teachings, Kairos was able to connect a few important dots. The longer he held the summon, the more strain he placed on it. That strain, in turn, forced evolution. His shadow wolf had grown—no longer an infant creature of instincts and darkness—it was now approaching the consciousness of a child. That revelation alone answered several questions, but it also raised many more. Then, as though reading his thoughts, the voice returned. [Since your summon has grown considerably, your integration has grown stronger.] Kairos smiled inwardly. Finally, some clarity. He leaned forward slightly, engaging deeper with the connection. He had more questions. Many more. "What kind of increase do I have now?" he asked, his voice low but clear in the mental space. The voice didn't reply immediately. A moment passed. Then it answered. [Heightened speed and strength. Swift. Senses sharpened. Grow more... and gain shadow control, along with more of the Shadow Wolf's abilities.] 'So the more you grow... the stronger I become.' A small smile bloomed across Kairos' face. The logic behind it filled him with an unusual excitement. Growth wasn't just about summoning anymore—it was about synchrony. Luckily, today was another Summoner's Battle Class. He would finally have the opportunity to put his newfound strength to the test. Kairos slowly pulled himself back from the shadow realm—the mental plane where his summons lingered—and returned to the real world. Around him, his classmates sat in rapt attention as Sergeant Henry continued with his lecture. "—At first, all summons might seem the same," Henry said, his voice echoing off the walls of the open training hall. "But in the long run, as you grow your summon to its peak, their individual characteristics will diverge. The Mythic can be differentiated from the Advanced, the Legendary too... and the Evolving." He let the words settle before continuing. "That is when the true strength of a summon reveals itself. This is why you will go on two hunts this year. The goal is to elevate your summon from Infant to Juvenile. Then, your second year will serve as the true measure of your strength and potential." With that, Sergeant Henry let out a breath, his stern expression softening just a bit. "This concludes today's class. Please proceed to your next." Chairs shuffled. Murmurs rose. The students began breaking into groups, dispersing with the excitement of the lecture still fresh on their faces. Kairos and his group waited patiently for the larger crowd to leave before making their move. His companions were still mulling over the lecture, confused by some parts but intrigued overall. Kairos, however, who had missed much of it while deep in mental communion with his summon, remained silent—his mind already far ahead. He wasn't thinking about lectures. He was thinking about combat. Strangely enough, he wanted to fight. "Hey, Kairos Veyl?" A voice rang out from the far side of the room, causing the group to pause mid-step. A girl stepped forward—Rayla Verdant. She walked with a proud posture, chin slightly raised, her gaze sharpened with disgust as it met his. Every step of hers felt like it was leading toward confrontation. "I can't believe someone ranked above me ran from the Summons Battle Training. For what reason?" she hissed, scanning him from head to toe. Kairos shook his head calmly. He felt a confidence growing inside of him, deeper than ego—it was the weight of progress. "I'm going to do it as a subclass," he replied smoothly. "Don't panic." Darnell, watching from the sidelines, recalled Carlos' warning words. Still, he found himself curious. He wanted to test his own strength against one of the elite faction members. 'I wonder how strong she really is...' "In that case," Rayla spoke coldly, "I challenge you to today's spar in the Battle Class." So that was her game. She had planned this from the beginning. She must've doubted her ability to beat him before—but after watching how easily Rivet had defeated him, she saw her chance to humiliate him just the same. However— "No. I won't fight you," Kairos said plainly, turning away. "I have a rematch... and this time I'll repay that bastard in double for disgracing me." Rayla didn't protest. She simply stood there, watching him walk away, her face expressionless—but her eyes held something else. Something ancient. Something... intrigued. 'There's something about the scent he possesses...' she thought, trying to place the familiarity clawing at her memory. She knew it. She knew it... but from where? --- Later that day, the students gathered once more—this time for the long-awaited Summoners Battle Class. All stood in anticipation as their master, Sergeant Lloyd, arrived in front of them. "Today," Lloyd said, stepping forward, "I will be teaching you a technique that will define your growth far beyond just summoning." He spread his feet into a deep stance and raised his arms into a distinct position—each finger, each limb, placed with perfect intent. "This is the Feral Sync Arts—known in the ancient tongue as the Ryushin Ferale. A technique that blends physical combat with the energy of your summon. A higher evolution of martial arts. Karate, Kung Fu... these are child's play compared to this." "It is essential to at least understand the basics. Watch closely." Lloyd crouched, his body tensing. "Echo Walk!" In a flash, his figure vanished—only to reappear five meters ahead in less than a blink. He delivered a swift, blinding kick into the air, the speed alone creating a sharp gust. Then he returned to a firm stance as if nothing had happened. "Whoa! I didn't even see that!" "That's unreal!" "How did he move so fast?!" Gasps and shouts filled the air. Darnell's eyes widened. "How is he that fast? That's not human, is it?" he muttered. Kairos narrowed his eyes. "If that was an actual battle... and his opponent was a summoner? That kick would've killed." The awe in the crowd was thick—except for a few from elite factions who had seen advanced techniques before. Still, none were as fast, as precise, or as deadly as what Lloyd had just demonstrated. "The Feral Sync Art is the most advanced physical technique you'll be taught. Only here—at Titanfang Academy. And only by me." His eyes scanned the crowd, firm and unyielding. "If you doubt its power... it's what I used to take down an entire fleet of Nyxaris. I came out alive—with less than fatal wounds." The awe turned into reverence. The students' excitement was now almost feverish. "Now... come forward," Lloyd said, gesturing toward the table at the front, where stacks of thick books rested. "These materials contain the fundamentals of the five Feral Sync arts. They will be your foundation during your first year." "Take one... and begin your practice now."
