Chapter 26 - Summoners Evolution Kairos was disappointed in himself for the reply he had given back on Mike's call. His words had sounded so much better in his head—cooler, more collected. But the moment they left his lips, they lost that edge. Still, it didn't matter now. His plan had gone almost too well—so well, in fact, that he considered it luck. The real challenge in confronting Mike wasn't Mike himself—it was his friends. Kairos's original plan had been simple. Carlos would engage the group, drawing their attention. Mike, being the kind of person who liked control, would no doubt send his friends after Carlos, isolating himself. That was when Kairos would strike. Alone. One-on-one. But things had shifted in the most unexpected and perfect way. Mike had broken away from his group all on his own. And by sheer luck, Kairos had caught him just in time—in an abandoned alleyway, narrow and worn, a place no one would pass through at this hour. It was perfect. Absolutely perfect. The idea to use bags as masks to conceal their identities had been Carlos's. He hadn't been joking when it came to staying anonymous. He even gave Kairos very specific instructions: break the rules, and he'd be hunted down and killed. The plan had been simple. Carlos would handle Mike's two friends. Kairos would take on Mike. And now... it had begun. "Fine! If you don't tell me who you are, then I'll tear off that mask from your corpse!" Mike barked. His voice was furious, trembling with fury and pride. He clasped his hands together and slammed them to the ground. A wave of thick red smoke rose beneath him, coiling upward like a stormcloud. From the depths of that smoke emerged a terrifying form— A red fox-like summon, almost the same size as Mike, with five swaying tails set ablaze with unnatural fire. The summon didn't burn, but it exuded heat and power. Just one look, and Kairos understood why Mike had been able to cast that earlier fireball. 'Fire against Shadow... That's not great odds.' Kairos gulped and then—without a second thought—sprinted forward. Full speed. No hesitation. His body glowed slightly as his summon's integration boosted his momentum. "Are you mocking me?! Where is your summon?!" Mike roared, outraged. He thrust a hand outward and the red fox instantly obeyed, launching forward. Kairos didn't flinch. He continued sprinting, straight toward the flaming beast. It stunned Mike. Who in their right mind charged a summon barehanded? Everyone knew that was suicide. But hey—if this guy wanted to die, who was Mike to argue? "Flames, Red Fox!" Mike commanded. The fox halted its charge just long enough to swing one of its burning tails toward Kairos. From that tail burst a massive crescent-shaped flame, too wide, too fast. Almost unavoidable. Kairos didn't stop. In the split second before impact, he crouched and leapt high into the air. The flames roared just beneath his heels as he narrowly escaped, the heat licking at his boots. He landed nimbly in front of the Red Fox, breathing heavily, but not burned. "What is this?" "Is that supposed to be an attack?" Kairos asked, voice cool and taunting. Mike's expression twisted in rage. The longer this masked man spoke, the angrier he became. "You think that's an attack?! I'll show you!" He waved a single hand again—no words—and the Red Fox understood. It lunged at Kairos with ferocity. Claws sliced through the air— Kairos barely dodged, jumping back a few feet. But the beast was quicker now. Before Kairos could stabilize, the fox lashed out again, this time swiping him across the side. WHAM! Kairos was sent flying. His body slammed into the side of the building with a loud crack. "Ahhh!" He hit the ground hard, falling to his knees. Blood dripped from his side—deep red, hot, and fast. He clutched the wound, gritting his teeth. 'This guy's trained... and that summon... it moves on instinct.' 'If I hadn't been so close during the attack, I'd probably be dead.' "That's what you get for being cocky, bastard!" Mike grinned wide, confidence returning. At the start of the fight, he'd been unsure. The masked man's entrance, his boldness—it had shaken him. But now? He was sure the guy was weak. He probably didn't even have a strong summon. "Red Fox! Final att—" "Hahahaha!" Kairos's laughter cut through the air like a knife. "If I were you..." he said between breaths, "I'd watch my back." The words hit Mike hard. He spun around, eyes wide— Too late. Behind him stood a massive, shadowy beast. A wolf—twice the size of the Red Fox. Its fur wasn't fur—it was thick, rolling smoke, oozing with darkness. Its eyes gleamed with crimson fury, and when it stared into Mike's, all he could see was hatred... And death. "AHHHHH—!" Mike screamed as the Shadow Wolf slashed its massive claws across his back. Blood sprayed. He collapsed, groaning. The Red Fox turned at the cry of its master, ready to help— Wrong move. The Shadow Wolf vanished instantly— Only to reappear behind the Red Fox, a black blur in the night. Before the Red Fox could react, the wolf lunged, sinking its enormous fangs into its throat. The Red Fox bucked and thrashed violently. Flames burst from its tail, scorching the ground. But each time, before the fire could reach its attacker, a barrier of shadows rose, absorbing the heat like a void. The battle of beasts continued, locked in a vicious struggle, until— Smoke. The Red Fox began to dissolve into red mist. Mike, tears running down his face, dismissed his summon. He was done. Defeated. Kairos walked forward, his expression now cold but oddly calm. Mike lay on the ground, crawling away, trembling. His pride, his power—shattered. His sobs turned into desperate whimpers. "I won't kill you," Kairos said, stopping just beside him. Mike didn't stop crawling. "I—I didn't do anything to you... Why are you trying to kill me?!" Kairos chuckled softly. But then— [Summon Connection Formed] The voice echoed in his mind. He froze. Then—something began to form beneath him. From the ground, dark smoke rose. It wrapped around his legs and slithered toward Mike. Kairos staggered. 'What the hell is this?' The smoke was warm, unnervingly warm. It pulsed like it had a heart. Kairos couldn't move. Neither could Mike. The smoke wrapped around them both—and Kairos could feel everything. Mike's heartbeat. His pain. His soul. Even his summon. Arrrghhhh! Kaaah! Mike screamed again as the black smoke enveloped him. His body started to twist and contort. Bones snapped, joints cracked, his screams rising with each movement. "HELP ME!" He screamed until his voice broke. But no one came. It was almost curfew. He was alone. And for some reason—he regretted it. He regretted ever stepping out. He regretted going back... ...just for chocolate. The smoke surged into him, like boiling oil through his veins. He clawed at the ground, his face twisted in agony. Finally, mercifully—the smoke began to recede. Kairos dropped to the ground, his energy gone, his vision blurred. He grabbed his head. His heart was pounding too fast. "W—What just happened?" Then the voice returned—clearer now. [Shadow Hound has taken its target.] [You have successfully consumed the life force of a summon.] [Evolution will begin now.]
