Chapter 36: A Summoner’s Grand Plot Kairos kept his eyes locked on Ashen, his mind whirling with possibilities and calculations. This wasn’t just any fight—they were up against a senior. Someone with more knowledge, more experience, and worst of all, a dangerous summon and a core weapon. ’This is tricky... Shadow Wolf, do you think we can handle him and his beast?’ Kairos asked internally, his voice calm despite the storm inside. The golden voice of the Shadow Wolf echoed in his mind, low and growling. [His beast... It has a dangerous aura.] ’As I suspected,’ Kairos thought, his gaze narrowing. Now more than ever, he needed to be careful. The presence of a strong summon only solidified what he already knew—Ashen wasn’t someone he could take lightly. A rough plan had formed in Kairos’ mind, though he wasn’t fully confident in it. It was risky, but risks were necessary when facing someone with this level of power. "I’ll take the lead," Lina declared suddenly, stepping forward with a stance that showed she was ready to dash. But before she could take a step, Kairos raised his hand sharply in front of her, signaling her to stop. His eyes remained on Ashen. "You won’t get close with that weapon in his hand," he said flatly. "I’ll reach him first. When I create an opening... then attack." "Die, you bastards!!" Ashen bellowed, his voice loud enough to shake the air. His sword slashed violently, and a beam of concentrated energy exploded out from the blade, ripping through the space between them and flying straight at Kairos. But Kairos had anticipated the attack. His body moved before the beam could reach him. He leapt over it, letting the blast crash into the ground a few feet away. Dust and debris flew into the air as he landed gracefully, still on his feet, eyes locked forward. Ashen wasn’t done. Raising his sword again, he launched a flurry of beams, targeting both Kairos and Lina. The air was filled with slicing waves of energy—some came diagonally, some horizontally, others vertically—all converging in a chaotic, rapid-fire barrage designed to prevent any escape. Lina, nimble and composed, dodged her incoming beams with impressive agility. Kairos, however, wasn’t as fortunate. He struggled to dodge the first two beams, and the third one struck him directly. There was a bright flash—then an explosion. Dust shot up into the air, swallowing his figure. Ashen’s lips curled into a satisfied smirk. "That’ll teach you, bastard!" he jeered, relishing the impact. His confidence surged as he turned toward Lina. ’Now that he’s down, I can focus all my strength on her.’ He raised his sword high, preparing to unleash another barrage— But then he froze. A sharp pain pierced the back of his neck, and something—no, someone—shoved him forward. His feet stumbled over themselves as he nearly lost his footing. His balance faltered. Then, in the split second of confusion, a hand grabbed his wrist—swiftly and without mercy—and yanked the sword from his grasp. "What—?!" Ashen gasped, eyes wide with disbelief. He spun around, anger and confusion boiling inside him. And there stood Kairos, holding his core weapon with a smug, almost amused expression on his face. "How... how are you here?" Ashen stuttered. His heart raced, and in desperation, he turned his head back toward the spot where Kairos had been struck. But the figure lying motionless and bloodied in the crater wasn’t Kairos—it was a second-year student who had originally been seated in the audience booth. "Impossible!" Ashen screamed. In that brief moment of shock and fury, he failed to notice Lina creeping behind him. She launched forward like a blur, her fist clenched tightly. With all her strength, she slammed her punch into the back of Ashen’s skull. The force was monstrous. Ashen’s body was hurled across the arena like a ragdoll, smashing into the wall with a thunderous explosion of grit and debris. The entire ring shook with the impact. Kairos’ eyes lit up with a glimmer of awe. Lina’s strength was something else—he’d known she was strong, but this... this was beyond expectation. She had launched Ashen across the entire ring, farther than even Rivet or Darnell could. But it wasn’t just Lina’s strength that had shocked the crowd. The true surprise was Kairos. Lina, still catching her breath, looked at him in disbelief. ’He was just behind me a moment ago... How did he move so fast without me sensing it?’ ’Could it be his speed? No... Even if he was that fast, I would’ve sensed something. It must’ve been teleportation—but how? There was no portal. So what had he done?’ Kairos wore a victorious smile, basking in the wave of satisfaction washing over him. Just as he had practiced that day with Carlos, he had used two key skills he’d been honing. The ability to teleport—not himself, but another target. A short-range position switch. It was limited in range and came at a cost to his energy reserves, but the timing had been perfect. As the beam struck, he switched himself with the unconscious second-year student, allowing Ashen to lower his guard. From the shadows, he emerged, and with that distraction, he disarmed Ashen. ’Though I’m at my limit now... The shadow skill won’t work again,’ Kairos thought, his eyes lowering to the core weapon in his grasp. He could feel the energy radiating off of it, raw and immense. But he had no idea how to wield it. So, without hesitation, he threw the weapon far across the arena, letting it clatter on the far edge of the stadium floor. "Good work with the distraction," Lina said, a grin forming on her lips. Her tone had shifted to one of excitement. "Now that he’s unarmed, we can take him down." She glanced sideways at Kairos. "You’re really something. I acknowledge you—you’re strong." Kairos gave her a half-grin, then turned his gaze up to the audience stands. Some second-years were already on their feet, their eyes fixed sharply on the battle, ready to intervene at any second. He knew that look all too well. From the gutters. From the streets. Even if they won... they’d still lose once the second-years got involved. There was only one option left. Kairos turned to Lina, voice quiet but certain. "I’m not the leading type... but if we’re going to win, we’ll need all the help we can get." Lina understood him immediately. No further explanation was needed. ’He wants me to rile up the first-years... get them to fight the second-years, or at least stall them long enough to stop interference.’ Before they could make their move, the dust in the ring cleared with a sharp gust of wind. Ashen stood—barely. Blood streaked down his face. He clutched his head, staggering. It looked like he could pass out any second, a testament to Lina’s devastating blow. "You rat... from the end piles of dirt!" Ashen screamed, his voice filled with fury. "You fight without honour! You sneak up like a coward! How dare you?!" Kairos met his rage with cold indifference. "You speak of honour like it’s something I should model after. A win is a win." Ashen bit down on his lip until it bled. Not only had a first-year disarmed him... he had humiliated him. Ashen’s pride, his ego, was burning. No. He wouldn’t allow this. He couldn’t lose like this. Suddenly, thick blue smoke billowed from beneath his feet. The ground trembled as the summoning began. A creature began to form—a massive, grotesque spider-like monster. Its eight spike-like legs stabbed into the stone. Its face was covered with hundreds of twitching eyes, and worst of all, it had three mouths: one under its eyes, one on its abdomen, and another horrifyingly embedded into its forehead. "Garan... attack these brats!" Ashen roared. Meanwhile... Far away, at the academy’s upper chambers, Carlos pushed open the heavy doors to the Sergeant’s meeting room. He didn’t knock. Only three staff were present—Silver, the academy’s lead nurse; Professor Goldrics, the aging Beast Summons instructor; and Sergeant Fex. All were seated around a long, polished table. "Good day, teachers," Carlos began, trying to keep his voice soft. Silver stood abruptly, slamming her fist on the table. Her eyes flashed with fury. "How dare you come in uninvited and speak so casually?! Do you want to be punished, boy?" Carlos held her gaze, unfazed. He lowered his head respectfully. "I’m sorry... but there’s something you need to see. A place. It may help uncover the brutal truth about what’s really happening in this school." Goldrics chuckled, rubbing his beard. "Hohoho, I like this child. He speaks strangely." "That’s what you’re concerned about?!" Silver snapped at him. "Both of you," Sergeant Fex cut in, brushing back his silver-streaked hair. His calm tone carried authority. "Let’s listen to what the boy has to say." Carlos met their eyes. "Please... follow me. My friends are in danger—real danger. If we don’t act now... they might die." Silver went still. Her heart skipped a beat. It was an opportunity she had been waiting for—to uncover the truth, to stop the madness behind the rising brutality, to find out who killed Mike... and maybe, just maybe, prevent something even worse from happening. However a feeling in her gut told her they might already be too late.
