Chapter 44: Summoners Hunt begin Kayla’s question hung heavy in the air—unanswered. To that sergeant Henry had simply ignored her, his stoic expression giving away nothing as he dismissed the class without a second glance. That, in itself, was the answer. A silent confirmation. It was clear now. There was a strong possibility the upcoming hunt might not take place on Earth after all. Everything they’d been told before now—might have been a ruse, a preparation for something far more distant. Another planet. A foreign terrain. One they weren’t ready for. Kairos couldn’t shake the heat bubbling in his chest. A simmering anticipation. His mind had latched onto one revelation—that his Summons could grow stronger from consuming monsters. That fact alone made his blood pump faster with adrenaline and hunger. He wanted the hunt. Needed it. As the classroom began to empty, students drifting out in scattered clumps, Kairos, Carlos, and Darnell remained seated, their expressions unreadable. This had become a routine. They waited until the noise died down, until the weight of too many eyes wasn’t pressing down on them. Then, and only then, did the three rise to leave, ready to discuss tactics and formations for the upcoming hunt. But before they could get far, two familiar figures stepped into their path. Carlos didn’t hesitate. "No. We’re a three-man team. We don’t need extra hands," he replied sharply, stepping forward with a glare. His voice was clipped and precise, making it abundantly clear he had no intention of being swayed. Lina’s expression darkened. Her brow furrowed, eyes narrowing in disbelief. She wasn’t used to rejection. Especially not from people she considered beneath her. She had come here expecting a simple yes, and the outright dismissal stung. But Kairos stepped in before things escalated. "Don’t worry, it’s fine, Carlos." His tone was calm, thoughtful. He didn’t trust Lina or Kaela—but he wasn’t blind to the advantage that came with numbers. It was better to have Lina at his side than plotting behind his back. Carlos gave him a long, measuring look, then backed down. "If you say so. Doesn’t mean I’ll trust them." Kairos nodded, understanding. He didn’t trust them either. Not completely. Darnell, meanwhile, stayed silent, his arms crossed loosely as he watched the exchange. His thoughts were clear as day. ’I don’t personally think we need more people. As long as I get to fight strong opponents.’ Then Lina pushed further. "Fine. I’ll join as the leader of the team," she announced, her voice firm and direct. There was a flicker of superiority in her tone, and Carlos’s jaw twitched at her words. She couldn’t understand it. Why was Carlos, a direct descendant of one of the great factions, taking orders from Kairos? ’If he can lower himself—I won’t.’ "Do you oppose this?" she asked, her voice rising with authority, expecting resistance. But what she got instead was silence. The three boys stared at her—unmoving, unblinking. Their cold, unreadable gazes pierced into her, and the silence that followed was suffocating. Her confidence wavered. The longer they stared, the more uncomfortable she felt. And for the first time, Lina realized something strange—these weren’t boys she could simply command. They were different. "I—In that case, we’ll meet tomorrow," she stuttered, the edge in her voice slipping as she turned quickly, grabbing Kaela’s hand and storming off. Only once they were gone did Carlos turn to Kairos, voice laced with sarcasm. "I kept silent thinking you’d speak up. Guess you’re fine with being ruled." Kairos shrugged. "I don’t like the spotlight. She’s a good front. I’ll guide her if I need to. We’ll be in good hands, as long as she listens." Darnell grinned. "I’m just glad there’s a hot girl in our group! She’s beautiful and strong—my type!" Carlos and Kairos both groaned. So that was what Darnell had been thinking this whole time. Truly, he was a simple man. --- The day of the hunt arrived. It was a big event, and all students had been given the morning off to prepare. Kairos used every second wisely. He dressed himself carefully, starting with the thick, dark hooded sweater he’d bought using his academy allowance. The same went for the durable dark trousers that hugged his frame comfortably. Both were made of high-quality material—ideal for hot or cold climates, just like they were taught in Environment Class. They hadn’t come cheap, but they were worth every credit. He laced up his academy-issued sneakers next, their soles built for terrain and endurance. Then, he slid on his gauntlet and carefully fixed his special ring onto his index finger before tightening the gauntlet over it. With minutes left before departure, he checked himself once more—mentally and physically. Everything was in place. Carlos and Darnell were already dressed when he exited the room. The three followed the academy map sent to all students, their steps quick and focused. The portal facility was located deep beneath the academy grounds. Descending a long flight of metallic stairs, they entered the vast underground chamber, and the sight that met them was both awe-inspiring and anxiety-inducing. A sea of students. A hundred voices murmuring, shuffling feet, the buzz of anticipation. And before them—dozens of portals, each glowing with a distinct color. Green. Red. Blue. Yellow. Each one radiated power and mystery. Kairos exhaled slowly, eyes scanning the portals with both curiosity and caution. They didn’t wait long before Lina and Kaela approached from the crowd. Lina looked expensive, head to toe in custom battle gear, her twin blades glinting on her back. She was dressed to kill—literally. Kaela, on the other hand, looked entirely out of place. She wore a simple gown and a wide hat, her expression blank, no visible weapons on her. Carlos frowned. "Hey, glad to see we’re all here. But are you seriously dressed for this, Kaela?" She didn’t respond immediately. Her face tilted slowly, her eyes resting on Kairos. "Your outfit is nice." Her voice was soft—unexpectedly so. And Kairos blinked, caught off guard. Was it her tone? Her timing? The way she barely spoke? Whatever it was, it rattled him. "Y–Yeah, you look... nice in yours too." A small gasp escaped her lips, and she quickly turned her head, her long hair falling like a curtain over her face. The air around them grew awkward. "Smooth, brother. Real smooth," Darnell chuckled, nudging Kairos with a sly grin. Kairos cringed, heat rushing to his face. ’Crap, I went out of line—’ He could already feel Carlos and Lina’s glances boring into him. Fortunately, salvation arrived in the form of a booming voice. "I am Sergeant Baron," the gruff military man called out as he stepped in front of the crowd. The room fell silent instantly. "I am not here to be your teacher, but to give one final briefing before the hunt." His voice was thunderous, filled with authority and weariness. "As you all know, do not delay before entering your assigned portal. And more importantly—there will be no student-on-student violence during this exercise. Just because we cannot monitor everything doesn’t mean there won’t be consequences." He paused, letting his words settle. "Help each other out there. You might not realize it now, but someone you save today might just be the one saving you tomorrow." A moment of silence. Then: "Now—enter any green portal close to your group. Do not stray. Do not enter the wrong portal. That mistake will be your last." With those ominous words, Sergeant Baron turned and walked away. One by one, the students began moving toward the green portals. Lina led their group, choosing one that was less crowded. She stepped in first without hesitation. Darnell followed her, then Carlos. Kairos paused for a second, glancing back at the other groups, at the swirling energy of the portals, at the unknown ahead. Then he stepped forward. "I guess this is it."
