The uneven rhythm of their steps rang like warning bells in the night, ricocheting off the cracked stone surfaces. Two academy students—Carlos and Lina—moved with haste, weaving through the jagged passageways near where the Titan had previously rampaged. Though they tried their best to keep up, the colossal beast had vanished ahead, far faster than they had anticipated. Neither of them expected the Titan to move with such terrifying speed. The very ground trembled from the residual presence it left behind. This realization came as a bitter surprise, particularly to Carlos. Darnell’s summon... it was said to be legendary. The files he had read over and over again made that much clear—Darnell possessed a summon powerful enough to be classified as uncontrollable. That was the primary reason the military had kept him under strict watch. A threat contained. But what Carlos hadn’t known—what no one had disclosed—was that the summon in question was a Titan. Seriously, how many surprises am I going to get tonight? Carlos thought bitterly, paranoia crawling under his skin like ants. His eyes flicked left and right as if something might jump from the darkness at any moment. Beside him, Lina was struggling in a different way. Though her expression remained composed, a hardened mask as always, exhaustion gnawed at her insides. Her limbs were beginning to protest with each movement. She hated this. Not the mission. Not even the danger. No—she hated being used like a weapon by her family. Hated doing their bidding, which inevitably led to chaos, destruction, and pain. It wasn’t that she felt sympathy for the weaklings they crushed along the way. In her eyes, they were irrelevant—collateral in a game of power. But war, ruin, and the endless cycle of bloodshed? That, she detested. She despised how these complications kept haunting her steps, dragging her deeper into the same cycle she wished to escape. And this situation now... it was shaping up to be just that. A downward spiral of insanity. As they pressed on, the Titan was now completely out of sight. All they could follow was the trail of destruction it had left in its wake—buildings crumbled, vehicles overturned, the ground gouged out in deep scars. This made their pursuit slower than they had hoped. Determined to speed things up, Lina took a risk. She initiated her integration—focusing her energy into extending her senses outward, searching for any remnant trace of the Titan. It took time. A long time. The strain crept up her spine and threatened to burn her mind out from within, but finally... finally, her range expanded enough. What she sensed made her eyes widen in shock. She gasped aloud, grabbing Carlos’ attention instantly. He turned toward her sharply, his voice carrying the weight of urgency. "What?!" Lina grit her teeth. She opened her mouth as if to speak, then hesitated, lips parting and closing again. The silence stretched, charged with suspense. Carlos clenched his fists. Eventually, she spoke, each word hesitant but firm. "The Titan... was defeated." Carlos blinked. Defeated? The air around him seemed to still. Even he couldn’t have brought down such a summon in so short a time, not even on his best day. And yet, it was gone? She continued, her voice lowering, strained from mental fatigue. "I could only sense a bit more before I burned out completely. But... I believe Kairos was the one who did it." Carlos’ heart dropped for reasons he couldn’t immediately understand. Kairos? There was a tension in his jaw, and before he realized, his lips were bleeding from how tightly he’d bitten them. Was he jealous? No. No, that couldn’t be it. Or maybe... Was he envious? Before the thought could develop further, Lina’s expression turned grave. "A strange energy is there. It’s a man, but... he doesn’t have just one aura. He has... about a dozen. I think... he has a dozen summons." Even saying it aloud felt ridiculous. Her voice trembled, and the tension between them grew thick and suffocating. Carlos’ throat ran dry. He didn’t need to speak to know what this meant. If that man decides to act... then Kairos is in big trouble. Meanwhile... High above the clouds, far removed from the chaos below, Goldrics continued his slow, pained ascension into the sky. His body drifted with a sluggish motion, like a dying ember struggling to rise with the last flicker of heat. He was barely conscious now, slipping in and out of awareness. Blood leaked freely from the massive gash down his abdomen, dripping from him in a thin stream that vanished into the clouds below. Each pulse of pain reminded him that he was walking a razor’s edge. If he didn’t act soon, he would die. He knew it. A sudden stillness overtook him. Mid-air, he halted and hovered, his gaze locking onto the vastness of the sky above. Reaching into his tattered coat, his fingers trembled as they clasped around a small metal container. Inside were several shimmering pills, glinting like gemstones. He poured all of them into his mouth at once. He tried to swallow. But the pain surged suddenly, violently, as if his own body rejected the notion of recovery. The pills spat themselves back out, hitting his tongue with a bitter sting. Again, he tried. And again, the pain was too much, too insistent. No... no, dammit! Fear, real and raw, flashed across Goldrics’ face. He didn’t hesitate. Driven by instinct—and sheer madness—he reached for his throat and clamped his hand tightly around it. With a brutal force born of desperation, he squeezed, crushing his own windpipe. A sickening crack echoed in the air. His breath halted. His gag reflex stopped. The pills went down. And immediately, he released his grip, coughing violently. Then, he raised one arm toward the heavens, hand trembling. A moment passed. Then—CRACK! A lightning bolt formed in the sky, streaking downward like divine punishment. It struck Goldrics directly on the head. And yet—he was unaffected. Instead, the energy spread through his body in radiant currents. Sparks danced over his limbs, across his chest, along his back. The effects were near-instant. Wounds began closing. The massive hole in his abdomen pulled itself together. Flesh reknit, bone snapped back into place, muscles surged anew with power. His arms flexed. His throat straightened. His entire body shimmered as it underwent rapid regeneration. In mere seconds, he was whole again—no, not just whole. Better. Stronger. His limbs moved with a new fluidity, his skin toughened, his heart pounded with purpose. "Thank you... Elteth," he whispered, eyes narrowing with newfound focus. Ravin’s words echoed in his mind: ’Since we don’t have the pretty nurse on our side, we’re going to need our own healing agent. And the best thing I could make is something that heals you within seconds... but takes ten years off your life in return.’ Goldrics hadn’t thought he would need it so soon. But he was grateful it had worked. He clenched his fists, the lightning still crackling faintly around him. "Now... I’m ready for the next round."
