Chapter 60: Summoners Finally Rematch The entire cave had turned eerily silent at Rivet’s entrance. He and his team walked in, senile smirks stretched across their smug expressions. They were four in number now—one less than before—but none of them seemed to care. In fact, they looked confident, dangerous even. "Don’t worry, Kairos," Rivet said, a crooked smile tugging at his lips. "I’ll make sure to put that video to good use... by uploading it for everyone to see." Maybe now he wouldn’t need to kill Kairos. Watching him suffer—the humiliation, the fear—would be far sweeter. Kairos gritted his teeth so hard it felt like they might snap. This... this was what he had desperately tried to prevent from the very beginning. His secrets—exposed. His abilities—revealed. And worst of all, it wasn’t friends who had discovered him, it was enemies—enemies who held the evidence in their hands. ’Of all the things that could have happened... Of all the bastards that could have arrived now,’ Kairos thought, his body trembling with suppressed rage. ’Why... why did it have to be you?!’ He couldn’t hold it in anymore. The words burst from his mouth, ragged and furious. "Why did it have to be you?!" he shouted, crouching slightly as his body boiled with fury. The sudden outburst caught Rivet off guard. For a brief second, his confident smirk faltered—but he quickly brushed it off with a laugh, interpreting Kairos’ anger as nothing more than pathetic barking from a wounded dog. At this point, none of Kairos’ teammates were in any shape to fight. Rivet knew it. They all knew it. Rivet shoved his hands deep into his pockets and began kicking loose stones across the cave floor casually. "I’ll admit it," he said, chuckling, "you’re strong, Kairos. Really strong. If we fought hand-to-hand right now... well, I’d probably struggle to win." His grin widened. "But you’re injured. Broken. All you can do now is bark like a helpless mutt." He licked his lips briefly, savoring the moment. "I almost feel like I wasted Ashen’s time getting these Apex Core weapons. Didn’t even need them, after all." The name ’Ashen’ sent a jolt through the group, as if a current of electricity had passed between them. Carlos, Kaela, and Darnell all visibly flinched. Darnell, in particular, wore the expression of someone who had just been stabbed. "You’re working with that bastard?!" Darnell roared, pushing forward recklessly. But before he could even take a step, the deep, stabbing pain in his gut flared up and overwhelmed him. He collapsed sideways, clutching his wound with trembling hands. ’Damn it...’ Carlos didn’t bother moving. He just tightened his grip on the Core of the Abyssal-ranked beast, silently enduring the chaos. First, the Apex Beast ambush. Then, the Abyssal Beast. And now this? He had long since run out of strength. His body was battered, his spirit exhausted. Kaela wasn’t much better—she was conscious, but barely. Her breathing was shallow, her body too broken to move. As for Lina, her eyes remained open, glassy and wide with fear, but her muscles were completely paralyzed by the lingering effects of the poison. She couldn’t even scream. This was the perfect moment for Rivet to strike. And he had planned it all too well. "I commend you," Rivet said mockingly, giving a slow, sarcastic clap. "Five against an Abyssal-ranked beast? Impressive. Really. And to honor such a glorious battle..." he paused dramatically, "I’ll be taking credit for the kill... and claiming that beautiful core for myself, isn’t that great—" "You talk too much," Kairos muttered under his breath, glaring daggers at Rivet. "Whether it’s you or that stupid senior of yours, you both yap too much. If you’re gonna kill us..." His fists tightened, his voice calm, collected—terrifyingly so. "...then do it. Stop using your filthy mouth. Come at me. Because I swear, I’ll kill every last one of you who saw me use my powers." It wasn’t a threat. It was a promise. One that, despite his condition, Kairos fully intended to keep. Rivet’s smile twisted into a snarl. "You always know how to piss me off, you damn bastard!" he barked, marching forward with murderous intent. His lackeys followed, slow and deliberate, drawing their weapons without urgency—there was no need to rush against broken prey. Kairos wanted to hide it, but deep down he knew—he had no plan. No way out. His shadow abilities were completely exhausted. His energy reserves—empty. Even summoning would be impossible now. His body screamed at him to collapse, but he forced himself to remain upright. ’I can’t think of anything... None of us can fight anymore. Damn it. This bastard... he really had this all planned out.’ Tightening his fists, he raised them to his chin, adopting a shaky martial stance. He would fight. He had no choice. Carlos suddenly groaned and pushed himself unsteadily to his feet. His body was bent awkwardly, but his fists were raised. "I’ll help you beat the shit outta these guys," he said, his voice raspy but burning with stubbornness. The four enemies burst into cruel laughter. Pathetic. That’s what they saw. Carlos was the first to be targeted. Rivet didn’t even bother drawing his blade yet—he simply stomped forward and slammed his foot brutally into Carlos’ already-injured gut. Carlos couldn’t dodge. The blow knocked him backwards, his body slamming against the cave floor with a heavy thud. His breath rattled painfully in his chest as he gasped for air. Rivet watched him writhe with sick satisfaction. "Man, I’ve always wanted to kill you," he sneered. "Son of the Forbidden Family, huh? My old man warned me about scum like you." He yanked his sword from its scabbard and without hesitation drove it down into Carlos’ thigh. The shriek that tore from Carlos’ lungs was agonizing. The wet, sickening sound of flesh splitting beneath steel echoed throughout the cavern. Blood pooled beneath Carlos, his hands flailing instinctively toward the blade—but the moment his fingers brushed the sharp metal, he recoiled in horror. "Hahahahaha! Look at him squirm!" Rivet cackled, his face alight with sadistic pleasure. This was his plan: to break them. To destroy everything Kairos held dear, piece by agonizing piece. ’Torture them. Make them suffer. Make Kairos watch helplessly. Then, when the time was right, release the video. Let the military turn Kairos into a guinea pig. His life would be a living hell.’ WHAM! A flash of motion. Kairos’ fist smashed into Rivet’s face with brutal force, sending him staggering backwards, his sword ripping free from Carlos’ thigh with a wet squelch. Everyone froze. Kairos stood over Carlos, chest heaving, eyes burning with raw, seething rage. "I fucking told you..." Kairos roared, his voice shattering the tense air. "I’M your opponent! Not him!" Without warning, he lunged at Rivet, throwing a punch with everything he had left—his left gauntlet flashing toward Rivet’s head. He wanted it to be fast. Deadly. But his injuries slowed him. Rivet smirked. With a sidestep and a grin— SWOOSH! The sound was unmistakable. The sickening, unmistakable rip of metal through flesh. For a moment, time itself seemed to stop. All eyes were locked on Kairos and Rivet. Kairos blinked. Once. Twice. His knees wobbled dangerously. Something sharp. Something burning. Something... wrong. Slowly, he looked down. And saw it. Rivet’s blade, rammed through his chest, jutting out of his back. The agony hit him a second later, crashing over him like a tidal wave. His vision blurred. His limbs turned to stone. Rivet leaned in close, whispering with a smug, triumphant hiss into Kairos’ ear. "I’m sorry," he said, his voice dripping with mock sympathy. "But in this rematch..." He paused, savoring the moment. "I win."
