Chapter 400: Chapter 400 Nathan White is a little envious Dashiell just had this idea, but quickly dismissed it. Mostly because his good friend—and gaming buddy—Lucas Jennings had told him, school was tough. Really tough. Not only did you have to wake up early every day. You had to sit still and listen to lectures all day. And you couldn’t even play games. Almost immediately, Dashiell abandoned the thought of school. His life as a Flood Dragon just couldn’t go on without video games. Games were so fun. He had even bought several sets of gorgeous skins for the dragon pet in his game. When he undergoes Dragon Transformation, he plans to model himself after those skins. School would only delay his little in-game dragon from rocking the latest skins. Scarlett Jennings wasn’t aware that Dashiell’s thoughts had taken such a sharp turn in mere moments. She continued explaining absentmindedly, “Nathan White was adopted by the dean and grew up at the academy from a young age.” Hearing this, Dashiell instantly looked at Nathan with newfound sympathy. Studying was pitiful enough, but being stuck at the academy reading books from such a young age? What a tragic little hedgehog. At least Lucas could play some games during breaks. This hedgehog who had been studying since childhood probably hadn’t even seen a game, huh? Dashiell remembered how he had been the same way back in the mountains. No wonder he was so focused on eating little snacks earlier; he probably hadn’t eaten anything like them before. Dashiell immediately lost any interest in teasing the spiky ball. Seeing that Dashiell wasn’t malicious, Scarlett didn’t concern herself with them and went upstairs to pack her things. As soon as she left, Dashiell grabbed Nathan, ignoring his resistance, and claimed he was going to show Nathan the “outside world.” The first stop was naturally the pet house belonging to the little fox. Back then, Dashiell had been instantly smitten with it. He refused to believe the pudgy hedgehog wouldn’t be tempted by it. Sure enough, upon seeing the exquisite and cozy pet house, Nathan’s eyes were full of envy. Even though the dorms were a lot bigger than the pet house, still... Dashiell instantly caught sight of that hint of envy in Nathan and said casually, “When you go back, you can ask your dean to buy these for you! I’m also planning to persuade Samuel Chalmers to set me up with a recreational room.” A much bigger one than this little fox’s! Something tailored for a Flood Dragon, preferably with a built-in pool. Nathan stammered awkwardly, “I—I’m an adult now. I don’t need stuff like this.” Although... he did kind of like it. Dashiell, on the other hand, didn’t care. “So what if you’re an adult? Haven’t you heard one particular saying?” “What saying?” “Men remain boys till the day they die!” Besides, demons mature far slower than humans. Acting like a youngster for a few hundred years is perfectly normal, isn’t it? Nathan didn’t usually browse the internet, and when he did, he was mainly focused on metaphysical topics. So, he genuinely hadn’t heard of this saying before. But he had to admit, Dashiell made quite a bit of sense. Maybe he should ask the dean about it later... when he gets back. If the dean didn’t have the money, Nathan could pay for it himself. Not sure if a million would be enough. ... By the time Scarlett Jennings came downstairs, having packed her things, Nathan was no longer trembling like earlier. He was even sitting next to Dashiell, their heads close together, surfing the web. Scarlett was rather surprised and turned to Ashton Todd, asking, “What are they looking at?” Ashton chuckled, “Pet accessories.” From what Ashton had overheard, there were hedgehog brushes, fur-care powder, paw-care oil... Ashton felt his senior had fallen quite far. Scarlett, however, didn’t seem to mind much. If Nathan liked it, that was enough. As she called for everyone to head out, Nathan even accepted Dashiell’s friend request before leaving. Once outside, they went straight to the location of a Low Rank task posted on the Spiritual Affairs APP. Tasks on the Spiritual Affairs APP generally fell into three categories. The first were help-seeking posts from people online. The app would determine whether the posted incidents involved Shadow Energy or Ghost Energy to confirm if the person had truly encountered a supernatural event. If necessary, the help request would be synced to the app. The second type consisted of tasks released by the Security Bureau. The Security Bureau didn’t have branches in every city. More often than not, one branch was responsible for handling supernatural cases in multiple cities. When overburdened, they would post tasks on the APP, allowing certified Masters, Ghost Cultivators, or Demon Cultivators to take them on. Successful completions would be rewarded with points. The third type comprised tasks posted by regular APP users, which included more trading and exchanges alongside missions. Previously, Scarlett had sold talismans via this method. No matter who posted the task, they would roughly determine the task Level. Different Levels yielded varying amounts of points. The academy expected new students to take on Initial Rank tasks. This particular task was intended more as a form of social practice for the newcomers. “For this new student assignment, safety is the top priority... in principle, tasks ranked above Low Rank are not allowed.” Nathan briefly explained the academy’s requirements. Before they set off, he had already locked in their first task. A locked task remained inaccessible for another Master to accept for three days, to avoid duplicates. The three of them rode in a car arranged by the Jennings Family and arrived at a residential complex. “Last month, a tenant in the complex passed away, and starting this week, two households upstairs have reported seeing ghosts every night. The commotion has been quite alarming, and even talismans from the Taoist temple haven’t worked.” Nathan introduced the task details as he guided the group inside. For Nathan, this year marked his first time leading junior students on a task. Though he was a bit nervous, he was determined to fulfill his role as a senior. Ashton listened to Nathan’s explanation and couldn’t help baring his teeth. “This sounds a lot like a malicious ghost... Are you sure this is Initial Rank?” “I-It is Initial Rank,” Nathan defended himself hurriedly, his voice colored with urgency. “Although the ghosts caused quite a stir, they haven’t actually harmed anyone. Most of it’s just mischief.” That said, leaving such incidents unchecked wasn’t ideal. Minor mischief could eventually escalate into something worse over time. Scarlett carefully reviewed the task description and noticed an odd detail. “Only the two households upstairs were harassed, while their neighbors down the hall remained unaffected. Probably some unresolved grievances from life.” When they arrived at one of the haunted households, the resident’s first words immediately confirmed Scarlett’s suspicion.
