After sending off Mr. and Mrs. Silva, Donovan’s third aunt also mentioned the dinner originally planned for tomorrow. That dinner was specifically prepared for Scarlett’s homecoming, to formally introduce her to the people in their social circle. But with her gone, they didn’t know if the party could still happen tomorrow. Everyone silently turned their gaze to Old Sir Jiang, hoping he would make a decision. Old Sir Jiang squinted his eyes slightly, then spoke, “The dinner will go on as planned.” He then looked at Lucas and the other young ones, “You all, go and personally bring your sister back tomorrow. If you can’t persuade Scarlett to return, then don’t bother coming back yourselves.” The group of them widened their eyes in disbelief upon hearing this, unable to fathom that their grandfather would say such a thing. Could Scarlett, a granddaughter they had only met a few times, really be more important than the three grandsons? Even if Lucas was an exception, Adam and Chase were mad. Adam was the same age as Scarlett, and Chase was older than her. For them to apologize to Scarlett, did they not have any dignity? Up until now, they didn’t think they had done anything wrong. They were family; arguing over some words to the point of leaving home, wasn’t she just making a mountain out of a molehill? Despite these thoughts, they dared not show any of it and were about to speak when Luca Jennings spoke up, “Tomorrow, I’ll go with them to find Scarlett.” Luca always remembered the look in Scarlett’s eyes when she said she wanted to move out. Especially since Donovan had pointed out, it was the room they had prepared for Scarlett, and yet, they asked her to vacate it just as she finally had a place to call home. During that moment, Scarlett must have been disappointed in him. Over the years, he had focused solely on work, and since Donovan had always been outstanding, he had never had to worry about him at all. So when Scarlett came home, he hadn’t paid special attention or arranged anything for her. It wasn’t until Donovan’s reminder that he realized he didn’t know how to raise a child. This time, he had to make amends. Fortunately, though Luca appeared stern and cold on the outside, he was not stubbornly traditional. He didn’t feel that, as an elder, he shouldn’t apologize to the younger generation. In his view, if you did something wrong, you should admit it and do your best to make up for it. Moreover, this was the daughter he had neglected for eighteen years. So the next day, when Scarlett had just woken up, she saw four people standing outside her door, each tall and imposing, as if blocking a mountain at her doorstep. It was at this moment she suddenly understood why Donovan had suddenly taken her back to the rental place last night. He had thought even if Donovan let Scarlett leave, he would have settled her somewhere, but Scarlett actually lived in a place like this? Scarlett glanced at Luca and the three people behind him with complex expressions, pursed her lips, and silently stepped aside to open the door. “Come in.” Scarlett’s living room was not large, and with Luca and the three men entering, there was almost a feeling of the room being filled up. The expressions on Lucas, Adam, and Chase’s faces instantly became more complicated. The community Scarlett rented in was considered a mid-level one, mostly occupied by recent graduates and some junior professionals. The environment was not bad, but it couldn’t be called great either. What was considered average to ordinary people appeared to be exceptionally lacking in the eyes of the upper-class young masters like Chase and the others. The living room was even smaller than the bedrooms at home. How could Scarlett live in such a place? “You—even if it’s temporary, you didn’t need to find such a shabby place, did you? It’s not like the family is short of money...” Adam frowned, convinced that this was Scarlett’s trick to make them feel guilty. No way was she getting that. Scarlett merely cast him a dull glance and ignored him. Adam was about to say more when suddenly a snow-white fat fox darted out from the corner pet house and scurried to Scarlett’s side. Only then did they notice the pet house and toys in the corner of the living room and, seeing the wear and tear marks, realized that this was indeed where Scarlett had been living for some time. It finally dawned on them this was the place she called home. Impatiently, Lucas spoke up, “Weren’t you living at the Garrison Family’s place all this time? How come you ended up renting a place here alone?! Were you kicked out before?” There was a clear anger in Lucas’s voice. Even though he indeed opposed this so-called cousin returning home, that was his own feeling. Still, Scarlett was the eldest daughter of the Jennings Family, and no outsider should treat her so disgracefully. Adam and Chase’s faces turned a bit unsightly too. They felt like the Garrison Family’s actions were slapping the face of the Jennings Family. Scarlett only thought of how peculiar it was that the three brothers’ attitudes changed as quickly as flipping a page. Just yesterday they couldn’t stand her, and now they were suddenly acting indignant on her behalf? “The Garrison Family doesn’t allow pets, so I rented this place separately for the fox.” Scarlett spoke those last three words slowly, her eyes staying on Lucas and his siblings. The group was suddenly reminded of yesterday morning when they had forbade her from keeping the fox at home. Their expressions became indescribable. Luca Jennings had also heard from Donovan about Scarlett wanting to keep a fox at home and immediately said, “Donovan has prepared a pet house for the fox. You can keep it at home, I assure you, no one will have any more issues because of it.” “No need, it’s quite comfortable here,” Scarlett paused for a moment and said calmly, “It’s used to it.” The “it” referred to the little fox, but also seemingly to herself. Luca Jennings only felt a stabbing pain in his heart. After seeing Emma White’s face, he should have guessed Scarlett had not had the life they imagined at the Garrison Family. They assumed that since the Garrison Family was also well-off, Scarlett must have been coddled and cherished, forgetting she wasn’t their daughter. For a child who wasn’t their own, how could the Garrison Family truly care for her? Thinking of this, Luca’s regret over what he said yesterday grew, “Scarlett, about yesterday, I was wrong, and I apologize to you. Can you forgive me?” Scarlett was briefly stunned by these words. She had already guessed that Donovan had them come to the rental to make her show her hardships. She wasn’t the type to silently endure all wrongs done to her, but she hadn’t even started doing so yet. How did this lead to an apology? Seeing Luca, a person who commanded respect and influence externally, lowering his head to her without hesitation, Scarlett didn’t feel pleased at all. Everyone thought what she said yesterday were just angry words, but she knew it was her true intention. With a quiet sigh, Scarlett said, “I was never angry with you, so there’s no need for forgiveness. You don’t need to apologize.” Pausing, she added, “I’m an adult, perfectly capable of independent living. You don’t have to worry about me. Moving out is simply because I want to.” The underlying meaning was that she wasn’t going back. Luca Jennings furrowed his brows slightly at her words and was about to speak when Adam quietly mumbled, “Then I’m an adult too. Isn’t it just because the family won’t let me live elsewhere that I’m not living out on my own?”
