Chapter 387: Chapter 387: Two Identical Living Souls After being caught in the act, Scarlett Jennings didn’t show a shred of guilt or make any move to let go. Instead, she said, “I’m holding onto you to keep us from getting separated in the crowd.” Samuel Chalmers glanced at the moderately busy but far from crowded street ahead and lightly curled his lips. “Mm,” he replied. The pair walked steadily forward, leaving behind the din of the crowd, and arrived at the base of an old apartment building. The only sounds around were the noisy squabbles coming from inside. There were parents sternly questioning their kids about what 3+6 equals, children wailing as they fought over toys, and quarrels between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law, as well as between spouses. The cacophony was almost surreal in its intensity. Scarlett Jennings followed the address given by Caius Carew to reach a door on the second-floor landing. From inside came the sharp voice of a woman berating someone, “All you do every day is eat and crap! Am I expected to do nothing but serve your old mother all day? She’s your mom, not mine! Why should I have to deal with all of this? You come home and just lie around without even caring about the kid! Is this supposed to be just my home to manage alone?” “I told you not to rent out the second-floor unit! The kitchen’s flooded again—how many times has it been just this month?! I spend all day cleaning up your mother’s excrement, and now I have to clean up this mess too! I must’ve committed unspeakable sins in a past life to end up married to you!” “Shut up!” Samuel Chalmers listened as the man inside finally roared angrily, followed by the sharp crack of a slap. His brows furrowed, and soon, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed out from within. Samuel Chalmers pulled Scarlett Jennings aside, pretending the two of them were just passersby. A moment later, the rusty security door flew open with a loud clatter. The woman inside burst out, cradling her face and running off without even glancing at the two people standing in the stairwell. Taking advantage of the open door, Scarlett Jennings caught a glimpse of the grim scene inside the apartment. In the cramped living room piled high with miscellaneous junk, a narrow single bed was positioned directly opposite the entrance. Lying on the bed was an elderly woman with a crooked mouth and unfocused eyes, immobile with her head tilted to the side. Her gaze was locked on a toppled half-filled bowl of porridge on the nearby table. With one look, Scarlett Jennings immediately recognized her as the Living Soul she had wrested out of Grandma Jennings’ body. But she still had that Living Soul in her possession—so what was going on with this elderly woman here? Without wasting time pondering further, Scarlett Jennings stood at the doorway and quickly pulled out a sheet of Talisman Paper, using it to investigate the state of the old woman’s Living Soul from the distance. With just one glance, Scarlett Jennings’ pupils trembled slightly. The old woman’s Living Soul was still intact. Moreover, the soul’s energy was identical to the Living Soul she held in her hand. Could there really be two identical Living Souls in this world? Perhaps it wasn’t an isolated case. Jacob Zimmerman was probably dealing with the same type of situation. ... Descending the stairs, Scarlett Jennings still wore a contemplative expression. She couldn’t be sure if this was also a manifestation of the Evil God System’s capabilities. But one thing was clear: something was decidedly unnatural about all of this. Scarlett Jennings didn’t say much, and Samuel Chalmers didn’t press her. As they walked out onto the street, Samuel’s phone chimed with a message. He glanced at it briefly before putting the phone away. Turning to Scarlett Jennings, he asked, “Should we head back now?” Still preoccupied with thoughts of the two Living Souls, Scarlett Jennings didn’t react immediately. “Hm?” Samuel Chalmers clarified, “Donovan told me to make sure I get you home early.” In fact, the message Donovan had sent was more specific—”Make sure my sister’s home by ten o’clock at the latest!!” Dating was one thing, but staying out overnight? Out of the question. Upon hearing it was Donovan’s message, Scarlett Jennings didn’t think much of it and was about to respond when a muffled, stifled sound caught her attention from the nearby alleyway. The sound was faint, like someone’s mouth being covered forcefully. Scarlett Jennings’ expression immediately grew serious; Samuel Chalmers obviously heard it too. Seeing Scarlett prepare to rush toward the alley, Samuel frowned and pulled her protectively behind him. Turning his head, he shot her a warning look with his deep eyes. Charging in blindly without assessing the situation—did she really think she was invincible? Stay behind me. Scarlett Jennings sheepishly complied but didn’t argue with him. No problem. She could protect him just fine even from behind. Casually pinching a Talisman between her fingers, Scarlett followed Samuel Chalmers into the alley. The entrance was pitch dark. From a distance, they could faintly make out a woman whose mouth was being covered by a man as he attempted to drag her toward a corner. It was too dark to see their faces clearly, but the situation warranted no hesitation. Samuel Chalmers and Scarlett Jennings were just about to intervene when Liora Gold and Araminta Gold suddenly appeared out of nowhere, blocking their way. The two little papermen gestured confidently: leave it to us. Without waiting for a reply, the two scraps of Golden Light zipped forward in a flash, heading straight for the man in the shadows. A scream of agony rang out the next instant. “What the hell?! Ah! Ghosts! Ah! Stop hitting me!” Samuel Chalmers and Scarlett Jennings rushed over to find the little papermen bouncing aggressively on the man’s body, their movements accompanied by crisp, noisy whacks. The woman who had been dragged to the ground was so stunned that she forgot to flee. Without wasting any time, Scarlett Jennings hurled an Immobilization Talisman directly at the man. “Freeze!” As the Immobilization Talisman landed, the man froze in his tracks, unable to move despite his earlier frantic struggling. Liora Gold and Araminta Gold, who had been coordinating their dodging and punching, exchanged a glance and then decisively continued their attack with newfound vigor. Each took a side of the man’s face—whipping one cheek with a sharp smack, then crossing over to leave a stinging slap on the other. Within moments, the man’s face had swollen into a disfigured, pig-like mess. The woman on the ground stared in complete shock. Her wide-eyed gaze shifted to Scarlett Jennings and Samuel Chalmers, who had suddenly materialized, her expression marked with both fear and embarrassment. Scarlett Jennings took one look at the woman and hesitated briefly. It was the same woman who had earlier stormed out after being slapped. What was more alarming was that traces of her recently alleviated death aura still lingered faintly on her face. Scarlett Jennings narrowed her eyes. In other words, had they not shown up tonight, this woman might have actually died. With that realization, Scarlett Jennings didn’t hesitate and immediately pulled out her phone to dial the police. Hearing her start to call 110, the woman on the ground seemed to jolt upright, frantically scrambling with her words. “No! Don’t call the police!” Her voice wavered between desperation and panic. She looked at Scarlett Jennings with pleading eyes. “He didn’t succeed, so... let’s just drop it, huh?” If the police got involved and the incident blew up, whether innocent or not, she’d never escape the reputational damage. Her family back home—especially her husband—would likely make things far worse for her. Her life was already messy enough. Scarlett Jennings met the woman’s pleading gaze but remained impassive. Slowly, she asked, “How can you be sure it was just attempted assault and not attempted murder?” Her words left the woman frozen in place. Without answering further, Scarlett Jennings resumed talking to the dispatcher. Calmly, she reported, “Hello, this is the alleyway near the complex at XXX block, building XX. My boyfriend and I have just interrupted what appeared to be an attempted robbery and murder. The suspect has been subdued. Please send officers as soon as possible.” Hearing Scarlett Jennings describe the incident as “robbery and murder,” the woman gave an imperceptible sigh of relief and remained silently slumped. The immobilized man’s face was pale with fear as he stared fixedly in Scarlett Jennings’ direction, unable to say anything in his defense. Meanwhile, Samuel Chalmers checked the time discreetly. The hour had indeed passed Donovan’s strict ten o’clock curfew. Not a problem, though. It didn’t matter.
