We’re of different tongues!’’ Hal froze right after calling the entire party of C- and B-ranked creatures idiots. He just felt satisfied that his plan had worked and that he had been able to get both Liora and his dear little Loki out of danger, momentarily forgetting that he was still in grave danger himself. The seething anger raging in the orcs’ eyes told him that escape wouldn’t be easy... As if to confirm what was on his mind, the brutes’ skin turned reddish, translucent red smoke billowing from their mouths and nostrils as they charged at him. ’Sh*t!!’ Hal cursed, disappearing just as the Orc Captain reappeared in front of him. He unhesitatingly used another charge of [Blink], emerging a few dozen meters to the left, hidden behind the thick body of an oak. Hiding turned out to be useless, as the shaman quickly called upon the power of thunder, obliterating the oak and nearly taking Hal with it. The orc warriors and the furious captain immediately gave chase the moment they saw him dash away. Before his hiding spot was destroyed, however, Hal had already swapped both [Weak Mana Blast] and [Fireball] for the physical enhancement spells [Swift] and [Enduring]. He cast them simultaneously in the next moment, his legs faster and his breathing significantly lighter. Hal managed to buy himself a bit more time. However, despite the boosts, the seven orc warriors and their captain were still slowly closing the distance. Only the shaman was getting left behind. The scrawny orc struggled but still managed to keep up by using spells like [Blink] and [Zephyr Step]. Clearly, it wasn’t only the human race who could master the rarer spells. Hal was glad that all nine were on him, though. At least he didn’t have to worry about one of them catching Liora and Loki. Minutes passed as Hal and the orc party rushed deeper and deeper into the forest, weaving through trees and other natural obstacles as they played cat and mouse. ’Damn it! Damn it all!’ Hal cursed inwardly. It would be ideal if he could wound the damned captain, but he had a feeling that it was impossible for him in his current state, and that trying would only waste his spell card charges. The leader of the brutes soon caught up again, toppling an oak with a mere shoulder tackle before swinging its massive axe down at him. But Hal was ready this time. Chains suddenly burst from the ground, latching onto the Orc Captain’s arms. To Hal’s horror, the common-tier restriction spell did absolutely nothing. It didn’t even delay the attack for a single millisecond before snapping and scattering to the four winds as silvery-vermilion particles. "Sh*t!" he cursed, forced to use another charge of [Blink], gaining a fair bit of distance once again. He could only cast the spatial repositioning spell five more times... But would his entire deck even matter if he died? Hal swapped his [Fireball] card back in, launching projectiles of fire and ice as he cast the fire elemental spell alongside his trusty [Glacial Shard]. The Orc Captain was not threatened in the slightest and simply ignored the spells. It was already too late when the brute leader realized that they were aimed at his subordinates. The flaming ball and the lethal shard viciously crashed into the body of the orc warrior just behind the captain, erupting into gray smoke and icy fragments, leaving Hal smiling as he immediately turned and continued dashing away. But when he glanced back, his eyes widened in utter disbelief. ’What the hell do you mean these bastards’ skin is tougher than that snake’s smoldering, armor-like scales?!’ He cursed. His [Glacial Shard] hadn’t even managed to pierce the skin. This meant that he could only use [Uncommon]-tier spells and above before even thinking of dealing damage. ’So be it, then!’ In the next moment, Hal swapped both [Fireball] and [Glacial Shard] for stronger elemental spells of the same type, though he couldn’t cast them immediately due to the slotting buffer for higher-tier spells. And so, for a few seconds, he continued his desperate dash, hoping to buy as much time as he could for himself. ’Yeah, just keep chasing, you bastards...’ He couldn’t wait to get payback by killing one of the seven underlings. Suddenly, Hal turned around, and dark hands emerged from the ground, firmly holding one orc warrior down. "Die, dumb brute!" he roared. The next moment, he thrust his left palm forth and pointed two fingers skywards, summoning a ruthless [Glacial Rain] and a [Flame Tornado] at the Orc Warriors, with the immobilized one right in the middle. A cacophony of anguished roars rang out the next instant, tickling Hal’s ears like sweet, sweet music, though he couldn’t relish it while standing still. He could only laugh madly as he ran. The Orc Captain and the Orc Shaman, on the other hand, were a different kind of mad. They were absolutely fuming. Meanwhile, Hal was beaming with delight. [Congratulations! You’ve earned 60 Chaos Points!] After all, he had killed far more than he expected, taking down three Orc Warriors instead of just one. But to his surprise and confusion, five of the underling brutes still remained... ’What? That C-ranked snake gave me 20 points, so why...’ It was then that he realized the situation wasn’t the same, as this one was far more dangerous. Any other human his age would have died by now. Perhaps Liora, too, had she been the one pursued instead of him. A few seconds later, it was the Orc Captain’s turn to attack, chopping at him again after catching up. This time, Hal remembered he had an unusual [Common]-tier spell that might work as effectively as [Blink]. He had slotted it earlier and cast the spell card by pointing two fingers forward. The next moment, an unexplainable force sent the brute leader flying back several dozen meters, though it wasn’t hurt in the slightest despite the seemingly devastating impact. This was one of the limited-use [Common]-tier spells he had drawn: [Knockback]. "Hahaha, take that!" To his surprise, the orcs suddenly came to a sudden stop, gazing coldly past him, seemingly slightly nervous. The Orc Captain and Orc Shaman, too, did the same. It was as though Hal faded into the background. The next moment, he shuddered, sensing a presence behind him. He also heard low snarls mixed with the crackling of thunder. For some reason, Hal was petrified, even though he didn’t know what was behind him. Or maybe he couldn’t move because he had a feeling about what creature was there. His suspicion soon proved true as a fairly large, malnourished demonic fox with blue fur and a thundering maw, paws, and tail walked past him just a few meters to his right, slowly making its way toward the orcs.
