The battle to decide the brightest star of this batch is about to begin!" announced Akari, her voice vibrant and clearly matching the crowd’s excitement. It was time for the grand finals of the Arcana Primis Cup, and the first to emerge from his tent and make his way toward the stage was Hal. "Hailing from the illustrious Grand Magic Academy, this freshman went from questionable qualifications to demolishing everything and everyone in his path. He carved his own way forward by toppling other young geniuses, including one of his seniors from the academy, and secured his place in the grand finals through a series of thrilling battles. Give it up for Hal Fennec!!" After him came the indigo-haired Felix, wearing the same relaxed and aloof expression as always. It was as if he didn’t see his opponent as a threat at all. Hal could finally understand why Felix was so confident, though. After hearing about the properties of void magic from Headmistress Isolde, and knowing that one’s manabound artifact granted a one-hundred-and-twenty-percent boost in this rare element, it was easy to see why someone like Felix would have a hard time feeling threatened by others his age. This specific element was also among the biggest reasons why the fell race managed to defeat even the dragonkin, the race blessed by the gods. The bastards were children of the void, after all. Of destruction. Locking eyes with Felix, there was no animosity, only curiosity and a bit of a bad impression on Hal’s part due to the bastard’s history of ruining Fernan, while the young master of the Dargon Clan remained quite apathetic, despite this battle being the most important one of their batch and generation. "Oh, I smell competitiveness in the air!" exclaimed Akari as she gave the two youngsters ample time to size each other up. Sunset was approaching. What better way to end the day than with the sight of a talented youngster sprawled on the ceramic ground, defeated by another? Hal didn’t pull out any weapon, as usual, while Felix retrieved his Void Elemental Wand strapped to the side of his hips. "Three." No words were exchanged between the two, only gazes. "Two." "One." The moment the timer hit zero, Hal began casting spells like a wizard gone mad, two at a time. He fired [Glacial Shard]s, [Fireball]s, [Wind Cutter]s, [Rock Bullet]s, [Sparkblast]s, and many other common-tier spells one could think of, utterly flabbergasting the audience with the sheer variety of elements he could call upon. Hal knew the best option would be to defeat Felix before he could finish building up his domain. The young master of the Dargon Clan already predicted that this would be his approach, though. And so, without hesitation, Felix conjured a translucent purple dome that cost him a ton of mana but was sturdy enough to protect him and his void eyes for a while. "Tch." Hal clicked his tongue in annoyance upon realizing that all of his spells were being nullified by the defensive half-sphere, although the barrier shrank with each spell it absorbed. He also noticed that Felix had already summoned six void eyes. He couldn’t allow his opponent to continue, so Hal decisively used his last charge of the [Rare]-tier spell, [Radiant Decimation], to finally destroy the dome into mere purple fragments that scattered to the four winds with a horrifying smite of light. This left Felix exposed. However, the young master remained as calm as ever, countering Hal’s attacks with void rays while summoning more eyes. ’Well, damn...this isn’t good...’ Hal cursed inwardly. He had no more charges of [Spatial Swap] and [Dark Grip]. Plus, he doubted that Felix would be so stupid as to fall for the same trick that took out Donner. The guy had eyes and a brain, after all... And he knew how to use them. In fact, Felix now had twelve eyes. A pair of regular ones and ten born from the void. Hal’s [Common]-tier spells just weren’t sufficient anymore, as every time he cast two spells, they were easily destroyed by five to six void rays. The remaining four also continued shooting at him, now forcing him on the defensive. The situation was quickly deteriorating for Hal. To make matters worse, not once had Felix stopped summoning more. If nothing changed, it wouldn’t be long before he couldn’t fight back. ’Tch...but I don’t want to destroy my summons...’ Hal pondered what to do as he sprinted across the edges of the main stage, dodging the rays, though the difficulty in doing so increased every two seconds. ’Oh well, in times like this, didn’t that spell always give me some breathing room?’ And so, bad for entertainment as it might be, Hal slammed his palm to the ground after dodging yet another void ray, causing thick white mist to spread and cover the entire stage. Not even he could see a thing. If there was one thing Void Magic was bad at, it was destroying a smoke cover, since the element’s attacks focused on as small a point as possible for maximum destructive power. Felix had no way to clear it easily. "Hmph!" The young master merely snorted in response, however. Felix had his ways. In the meantime, he made a lemonade out of the lemons the situation gave him, deciding to summon a few more Void Eyes and the big one, his Void Annihilation Eye. The young master also created a few void pockets for defensive purposes. Meanwhile, Hal had turned invisible using [Dark Ward], observing things from a bird’s eye view through the Spirit Sparrow’s vision, swapping out a few cards while at it. A plan was forming in his mind, but so was a question: How the hell was Felix maintaining such an expenditure of mana? He was no stranger to mana cost, and those Void Eyes, Void Pockets, and the Void Annihilation Eye certainly drained mana from their caster continuously... ’Tch, if only I had a way to know for sure...’ In the end, Hal could only act on his plan. He dismissed his Spirit Sparrow and began walking closer to Felix.
