Chapter 192: Redwood Skirmish (3)

"We’ve come to assist!" roared Rocky from behind Ennya. The Chaos Platoon, along with the scattered remnants of the Fire Platoon, had managed to rejoin the fray due to Hal’s Steel Golem managing to defend the Fellkin Five’s final attempt to end the battle quickly. As they ran, Hao asked a member of Ennya’s platoon if they had already requested reinforcements. They apparently tried, but the signal was jammed and the call wouldn’t connect. Hao gave it a quick try and confirmed the abnormality, clicking his tongue in frustration. He was displeased at his own incompetence. He, of all people, should have thought about this and not lost the majority of his rationality due to the suddenness of the situation. He should’ve contacted the camp before they arrived! ’Damn it!’ Unfortunately, they’ve already joined the skirmish, and he would have to focus on their opponents if he wanted to live. One momentary loss of focus against enemies of such caliber would prove fatal. And so, despite his mediocrity in the scale of this skirmish, Hao fired away with his wind elemental spells, contributing what he could. A short distance away was another ongoing battle. Hal dodged three Thunder Spears in succession—the first by a swift step back, the second with the help of [Licht Step], and the third with [Blink], though he didn’t cower away, reappearing in front of Arukha instead of fleeing farther away. There was a translucent-blue orb floating a few centimeters away from his palm, hovering in accordance with his every motion. Hal palmed forward, and the orb shot forth. It was fast. However, his Fellkin opponent merely sneered in disdain, punching at it with lightning crackling in his fists. To Arukha’s shock, his fists simply phased through the [Spirit Orb], and so did his entire body. ’Got you!’ Hal then pulled his arms back, guiding the orb as it returned to his hands. "What..." Arukha was confused, feeling slightly weaker and more lethargic each time the mysterious sphere passed through him. His breathing also momentarily stopped during those unpleasant moments, adding to his exhaustion. The Fellkin Warrior didn’t know exactly what happened to him. But how could he dwell on the matter when Hal Fennec, a so-called Magna Prospect of the lesser race, was grinning smugly in front of him and wasn’t running away. The young bastard dared fight him in close combat? "Delusional brat, die!" Arukha roared in fury. The next moment, clawed thunder gauntlets appeared on the Fellkin Warrior’s forearms, crackling menacingly as he swiped at the arrogant young human like a bloodthirsty beast. Hal, however, easily dodged, maneuvering as fast as lightning and reappearing to the side, just a few centimeters out of Arukha’s reach. He then willed the orb to shoot forward once more, phasing through the Fellkin Warrior two more times and making him feel weaker and ever-so-slightly more exhausted. "Agh...what the hell is that orb?!" raged the fell veteran, not noticing that his breathing was a bit heavier now. "Heh, you might want to back away now." Hal mocked. "Perhaps you can defeat me in a ranged battle. But close-quarters combat? Heh, dream on!" He said everything as though he were a master of the said fighting style. It was a ten out of ten ragebait. Naturally, Arukha, who fought in such a way his whole life, was infuriated to the high heavens. The audacity of the human brat!! He had indeed lost in the previous exchanges. However, he refused to believe that the brat was better than him in close-quarters! It was just that he didn’t know what the orb was and what it did. Now, he did, and he would like to see how the bastard would continue to play his cheap little tricks against him. Arukha now knew that the orb could only be avoided. It wasn’t slow, but it wasn’t too fast either. The strange spell was easily dodgeable for someone like him. Meanwhile, Hal had made a few adjustments himself. He changed the gesture slot with no cards to a hand waving motion, which meant that nothing would happen even if he performed it. He indeed was playing tricks. However, the bamboozlement ran deeper than Arukha could ever expect, as the orb was controlled only through the mind and not through any palm thrust motion that he had been doing since earlier. He now had a different spell in the palm thrust gesture slot—one that would catch Arukha off-guard. Hal knew he had to end it before his Fire Elemental was destroyed by the Fellkin warrior named Bor, as he wouldn’t be able to move as freely as he could now if he were fighting two opponents. Two was always better than one, after all, and there was no chance that his elemental would pull off an upset victory, as it was currently only fighting using its instincts as a summoned flame spirit without Hal’s guidance. ...The duel soon resumed. Arukha rushed towards Hal, performing a few hand seals to cast a new thunder elemental spell as a Thunder Spear descended on Hal like a meteor. Hal was able to dodge the attack quite easily. But then, in the next moment, a massive dark blue magic circle appeared—one that was larger than Donner Rakurai’s. Thunder then began striking the area around Arukha, the field following the Fellkin Warrior as he bolted forth. Hal clicked his tongue in annoyance as his adversary arrived within striking distance. Aside from the bastard’s attacks, he now had to watch for the lightning strikes, as one could randomly strike him. "Let’s see you talk once you’re charred black by my thunder!" roared Arukha as he clawed at the arrogant human brat. Hal was able to dodge the attack by [Zephyr Step]ping backwards before thrusting his palm forward. "I already know your tricks, brat!" Swiftly shifting his body to the side without stopping his forward momentum, Arukha evaded the [Spirit Orb], his frustration culminating in a cruel smile as he grabbed at Hal’s head, ready to fire a Lightning Wave if he stepped back or crush the young human’s skull with his bare hands if he didn’t. Hal could use other, more complex repositioning spells, though the Fellkin warrior doubted it. Even so, Arukha was ready to chase him down no matter where he went with Thunder Rush. The fell veteran had everything covered. With his reflexes, it should be easy to give chase instantly, regardless of what action the arrogant brat took. Yet Hal Fennec chose the dumbest option: holding his ground with a desperate expression that didn’t match the sarcastic, arrogant words that came out of his mouth next. "Really?" The next thing Arukha knew, he was blasted heavenward by a scorching [Geyser] eruption.
