Chapter 177: Chaos Platoon, Move Out!

Beneath the gloomy skies that threatened rainfall, twenty youngsters walked forth. The Parralen Valley Outpost was as far as the army’s manatech vehicles were permitted to go. So, Hal and his Prospect Platoon could only head to the battlefield on foot, scanning their surroundings as they did. It seemed they were in a grove, though the trees seemed extremely old and had already existed for centuries. There were a few bushes lying around, but aside from that and the oaks, the area was pretty clear. It would be difficult for beasts or monsters to ambush them here, if they even existed in the area. After a few more minutes, however, the biome they were walking through changed into a bush-dense area with reddish-brown soil. One-hundred to three-hundred-foot-tall redwood trees also gradually replaced the oaks, mesmerizing the youngsters. They had never been in such a, dare they say, relaxing place before. Unfortunately, their sightseeing was cut short when they noticed the entrance of a valley in the distance, along with a fairly large camp of soldiers, though it was only half full. They had arrived at the battlefield. ’A redwood forest valley, huh...’ Hal mused. With his meager mana affinity, Hal couldn’t sense the denseness of the mana in the area, but his underlings could. They could see why arcane beasts and monsters would opt to live close to this area. Perhaps, if not for the army, the location would already be teeming with creatures. Nonetheless, just past the valley was the true battle zone, where plenty of Fell Beasts roamed, awaiting for the call of the Fell. Their job, apparently, was to reduce the Fell Beasts’ numbers even before the creatures tried to cross the valley. The timeline of the mission would depend on when the beasts would try to cross, though the Fellkin Warriors would certainly make their move once they realized that the horde they were forming was being attacked. Soon, Hal and the others arrived in the camp. To their bewilderment... "You’re late again, Prospect Platoon!" reprimanded Zephyron, who had somehow arrived earlier than them. "Hmph, I expected you to arrive ten minutes earlier. Anyway, time for your first mission. I’ve already sent the Fire Prospect Platoon on theirs. Come, I shall give you yours." They only walked for an hour and a half to the battle camp. However, can’t they at least catch their breaths? Jeebus Bryce! Unfortunately, the Wind Magna wasn’t giving them even the slightest chance to complain. The platoon could only follow the guy inside a meeting tent. This time, they didn’t have seats. ’Why even have a meeting in the Parralen Valley Outpost if we’re going to have another one here?!’ thought Hal. "Squad leaders, take a map each," Zephyron ordered, plopping four tied scrolls onto the table. Hao, Rocky, and Yhohan immediately took one each, leaving only one map remaining. Hal, meanwhile, was a bit dumbfounded. ’Rocky is a... squad leader? Wait... there are squad leaders?!’ They had engaged in long conversations along the way, discussing all kinds of topics, and yet they somehow had not talked about this important matter. Hal had not noticed, but everyone was already looking at him, including Zephyron, who was glaring. "So? Squad Leader Hal Fennec, when will you take the map?" Hal froze, quickly taking the last map. How could he have forgotten that he would lead his own squad? ’Damn it, I’m becoming like Rocky!’ Fortunately, aside from a lingering glare that lasted another second, Zephyron chose to move on. "Now, open your maps," the Wind Magna began. "The intel officers have marked the areas on the map with either red or blue. The blue ones are yours, while the red ones are the responsibility of the Fire Platoon. Do not take on the marks that aren’t yours. Understood?" "Sir, yes, sir!" responded the Chaos Platoon. "Good," nodded Zephyron, slightly pleased. "Every area has around five to seven isolated Fell Beasts. However, do not forget that they have legs and can move. Do not rely too much on the intel, and make sure to conduct proper recon. If there is a B-ranked Fell Beast, retreat immediately and target a different area, or return directly here and report it. Understood?" "Sir, yes sir!" "Your quota is three marked locations per day. Do not worry about the Fellkin Warriors, as we have veterans stationed in the middle of your areas of operation. They will intervene if they sense the bastards. That is all from me. Head out!" The entire platoon bowed before leaving. It was already noon, and they still had to eliminate three marked locations for the day. The Chaos Platoon had no time to waste. Unfortunately, even the slightest mana vibrations could alert the Fell Beasts to their presence, so they had to reach each location on foot. The good thing was that the targets were not very far from their current position—perhaps only about thirty minutes to the nearest one, with the other locations about ten minutes apart. Exiting the tent, Hal said, "Come. Since we’re behind schedule today, we shall take on these three marks." Hao’s brows furrowed. The three marks Hal had chosen were among the most dangerous of the nearby ones, as two were located close to each other, only about five minutes apart. The Fell Beasts there could potentially help each other. The short squad leader was about to voice his opinion, but remembered that this was Hal’s first order. If he immediately argued with him, the other members might lose confidence in their leader’s decisions. Hal was a Magna Prospect, and he was not. Hao decided to give his leader the benefit of the doubt for now. If their first operation failed for the reasons he had already predicted, he would not hesitate to voice his opinions next time, although it was uncertain if there would even be a next time if they failed. The point was, he wasn’t as strong as Hal, so the short nerd acknowledged that there might be angles to the operation that someone like him wasn’t qualified to see. He could only hope that their leader wasn’t overestimating himself.
