Chapter 97: Chapter 97: Neither the first nor fourth branches of the family are willing to take the blame for the second branch.
Ms. Liu was truly at her wit’s end, all sorts of vulgar and harsh words spouted out at once, "Look at you, totally reliant on Second for being a scholar to live a life of decadence. How can you afford rouge and compact, but not prepare the finances for Second? If you have the ability, take out your own money to help Second redeem himself! If you can’t, just stop making plans involving other people’s husbands."
With that, Ms.Liu turned to Ms. Luo, "You, sister-in-law, must watch your step carefully. Don’t think because your household can’t provide what’s needed that you can shift your focus onto our Brother Four. Hmph, don’t think your mistakes will be shouldered by us all."
After saying that, Ms.Liu showed none of the usual respect as she addressed Old Lady Hua directly, "Mother, I’ll make it clear today: if the head of our household is forced to take the blame for Second, our branch of the family will hang ourselves at your doorstep. Just watch if you don’t believe!"
Having dropped this bombshell, Ms.Liu stomped off, dragging Yang Da’an back to their own courtyard.
Ms. Luo, the last one left, noticed Old Lady Hua’s gaze returning to Yang Xiaochuan. Terrified, she pulled Xiaochuan along with her as she fled. As they were exiting, she managed to get out, "Mother, our branch of the family will never agree. Let Second’s wife figure out a way to raise funds instead."
For a while, the only people left in the room were Old Lady Hua and Ms. Ye, face to face.
"Mother, what should we do now?"
Old Lady Hua waved her hand weakly. "What can we do? Let’s first raise the funds and see if we can redeem him." This was her son, too. If someone had had the willingness to help, it would have been good. If not, by forcing them, Ms.Liu might very well follow through on her threat, killing her entire family.
Yang Chuxia had heard some of the commotion from the main house, but didn’t pay it too much mind. In any case, it didn’t make any difference who was locked up; as long as it was one of Old Lady Hua’s sons.
Thinking of the conversation she had had during the day with the tavern owner, Yang Chuxia picked up the iron hoe close at hand.
"Xiaxia, what are you doing?"
Yang Chuxia chuckled at the question and instructed Yang Qingrui and Yang Qingtong, "You two go play in the yard for a bit. Only come back after I call you."
Once the younger brothers had left, Yang Chuxia finally answered Ms.Wang, "Remember I buried those crabs earlier? I want to dig them up to see if they have spoiled and how they taste."
Theoretically, there shouldn’t be any problem. But she was still uneasy and wanted to check ahead of time. If there were no problems, their future finances would be secured. But if there were, she’d have to think of another plan quickly.
Over the past couple of days, with Brother An injured and her filing a complaint with the authorities, money had been flowing out like water. Though Brother An had offered his own savings, how could she accept it? Not to mention that Brother An had been injured trying to save her. The medical fees should be paid by the Yang family, and not by An himself.
But, now that a complaint had been filed, they could only wait for the magistrate’s judgement regarding the medical costs.
Yang Chuxia brandished her hoe and started to dig. Seeing this, Ms. Wang put aside her work and came over to help.
The hole wasn’t particularly deep, just a bit over a meter, and the previously loosened dirt was easy to dig. When the buried jars came into view, she leaned over to lift the leftmost small pottery jar out of the hole.
Ms. Wang hurried over to help carry the jar.
After Yang Chuxia had cleaned her hands and removed the rainproof paper wrapped around the pottery jar, she revealed a clean small jar. Eager, she quickly opened it and was immediately greeted by a rich, intoxicating smell of wine, perfectly mixed with a fresh aroma.
