Chapter 299: Chapter 299: Silver That Doesn’t Belong to Ms.Hua Junior
"I wonder where Ms. Hua Junior would hide the stuff?" Yang Chuxia muttered while searching. But she couldn’t find anything after looking around. "Could Ms. Hua Junior be carrying the items on her body?"
As soon as she finished saying that, Yang Chuxia immediately shook her head. People might carry silver and land deeds on their person, but not many would do the same with their household registration records.
Yang Chuxia then thought about where rural women typically hid things. As far as she knew, Ms. Liu liked to hide important items in her underwear, Old Lady Hua loved digging holes at home, and Ms. Luo preferred sewing things into her quilts.
Don’t ask her how she knew; it was just that the Hua Family’s mother-in-law and daughter-in-law would reveal everything during arguments, making it hard for her not to hear it.
Thinking of Old Lady Hua, Yang Chuxia wondered if Ms. Hua Junior would also be like her aunt and enjoy digging holes to hide things. With this in mind, Yang Chuxia searched the room’s floor for loose soil and even looked under the bed.
But while she couldn’t find any loose soil under the bed, she noticed that the bed’s plank seemed a bit off, as if it protruded outward slightly. She reached out to touch it, and the plank unexpectedly caved in.
She didn’t expect the plank to be a hiding spot, but when she took it out, several pieces of paper and small silver ingots fell out.
Opening the slightly yellowed papers, what else could they be but land deeds and the household registration? Most importantly, one piece of paper caught her attention because it turned out to be a silver banknote worth fifty taels.
Ms. Hua Junior definitely couldn’t have that much money, so where did it come from? Could it be from Ye Ziping?
It was possible. Ye Ziping must have trafficked more than the few people he confessed to. There was no telling how many more he had sold. This money was either from trafficking young women or given by higher-ups, so it certainly wasn’t clean.
But, looking at the silver banknote, she found herself in a quandary. It was easy to deal with the broken silver bits by giving them to Brother An as compensation, but what should she do with Ms. Hua Junior’s banknote worth fifty taels? She definitely wasn’t going to take it as it was too disgusting to use.
Should she wait for Brother An to come back at night and discuss it with him?
With that thought, Yang Chuxia put the items into her bag and opened the door to leave. The two aunts had already cleaned up the outside area by that time.
Yang Chuxia let people come in again to help her tidy up the inner room. As for Ms. Hua Junior’s belongings, she packed them into a bundle and threw it to the side.
After arranging the rooms and cleaning the courtyard, it was getting late, so Yang Chuxia paid the two aunts some silver coins before heading home.
When she got home, she saw that Ye Zi’an and Yang Qingrui had already returned.
"Huh, why are you both back so early today? I thought you’d come back with my dad from the shop."
Yang Qingrui replied, "Our teacher has something to do tomorrow, so we have a day off and were told to come back and study."
"I went to the shop, but Uncle told me to come back early. Plus, I rode a neighbor’s ox cart back from the village today, so that’s why I’m early," Ye Zi’an added.
When Yang Chuxia heard that he had ridden someone else’s ox cart back, she suggested, "There’s not much going on at home recently, and we barely use the ox cart. You might as well drive it to town from now on, it’ll be more convenient when you come back at night."
"No need, it’s the same if I walk back, and it also helps me train my leg strength," Ye Zi’an thought for a while before saying, "Besides, there’s not enough space for my ox cart at the tavern."
