Chapter 273: 252: I don’t want the stars; I just want you.
He gently patted the little girl’s back, feeling the corner of his shirt being gripped tightly, his furrowed brows nearly capable of squashing a fly.
"Zhizhi, calm down." Shi Wei softly coaxed her.
Seeing those crimson eyes showing no sign of fading, the worry in his heart magnified countless times: "It’s over now, he’s still alive."
Yu Zhi leaned against the crook of his arm, gasping for breath as though having been filled with seawater.
Trapped in guilt and self-reproach, she seemed incapable of waking from that nightmare no matter what.
"Zhizhi, Wen Renche is alive." Flustered, Shi Wei was forced to repeat it again.
He lowered his head slightly, covering her eyes with his own and placing an impossibly gentle kiss upon them.
His free hand then slipped through her fingers insistently, interlocking them tightly: "Don’t be afraid, I’m here."
His deep voice carried a hint of hoarseness.
Like coffee infused with warmth on a winter’s day, it appropriately brought a sense of comfort and ease to the girl.
Under the continuous sound of reassurance drifting into her ears, Yu Zhi took deep breaths many times, gradually calming down.
She buried her face in his chest for a while, finally speaking softly, "Shi Wei, I’m the one who wronged him."
She owed Ah-Che too much, and only by exerting every effort to make amends could she feel even a bit better.
Even if it meant becoming a bad person, she wouldn’t refuse.
Shi Wei, from those few words, had already guessed some of the things the little girl had once been involved in with Wen Renche.
The jealousy within him had also completely dissipated.
What did it matter if Wen Renche liked the little girl?
Given the circumstances, there could never be an outcome between the two of them. There was no need for him to waste emotional energy on pointless anger.
Shi Wei kissed the little girl’s forehead, his defined hands gently stroking her hair: "Zhizhi, has he taken care of the matter in Australia?"
"He said it’s almost done, but I don’t quite trust him."
"I’ll find someone to look into it tomorrow. I’ll make sure he doesn’t suffer anymore. You just stop overthinking, alright?"
His eyes were filled with heartache. Rather than letting her linger in that vicious cycle, he’d rather lend a helping hand to that person.
If they could live in peace sooner, his little girl would thoroughly put her mind at ease and wouldn’t return to that earlier state.
"Shi Wei, thank you." Yu Zhi looked up at him, her almond-shaped eyes recovering their usual clarity and purity.
Within her shimmering gaze, his face was reflected, as though silently telling him that no one else but him would ever matter again.
"Why so formal with your husband?" Shi Wei, in a good mood, pinched her nose gently, his faintly flushed lips curling into a smile of genuine joy.
"It’s courtesy."
"To me, it’s unfamiliarity."
"Then I won’t say it anymore." Yu Zhi pursed her lips.
Her slightly flushed cheeks made her look obedient and endearing.
Shi Wei chuckled softly, grasping her wrist and pressing it against his own jaw: "Zhizhi, you haven’t helped me apply medicine yet."
The treatment that Wen Renche, that dog... that man received was something that, as her husband, he absolutely had a claim to as well.
Otherwise, his mind might linger on this all night.
Only then did Yu Zhi realize her oversight, hurriedly jumping up from his knees. Without even bothering to put on her slippers, she went looking for the first aid kit.
The hurried sound of her footsteps echoed repeatedly across the redwood floor.
Shi Wei leaned back contentedly, draping one arm casually over the back of the sofa as he watched his little girl rummaging through the medicine box.
Soon, a cool sensation touched his jaw, prompting him to feign pain with a hiss: "Zhizhi, are you trying to punish me?"
Here we go again.
Yu Zhi thought Shi Wei truly excelled at playing spoiled when pampered.
Despite her movements being as gentle as possible, he still acted completely delicate.
"Not punishing." Yu Zhi pretended not to notice his little antics, giving him the answer he longed for: "You’re my favorite."
"How much do you like me?"
"Very much, the kind of very much."
"How much is very much?" Shi Wei pressed on persistently.
If there had been a mirror in front of him, he surely wouldn’t have missed seeing the self-satisfied look sprawled across his face.
Yu Zhi paused to ponder: "Apart from the stars in the sky, anything you want, I’ll give you."
Shi Wei arched his brow, his grin practically reaching the heavens.
He hugged the little girl’s slender waist tightly, his gaze brimming with dazzling starlight that burned too intensely to be met head-on.
"I don’t want the stars, I only want you."
**
In a high-rise office building located in the city center.
Employees hurriedly carrying folders moved from one office to another.
Their expressions were solemn, and the tense atmosphere left no room for idle chatter, everyone focused on their own tasks.
Ever since Shi Yin decided to bankrupt the Meng Family, this kind of atmosphere had persisted for a week.
Compared to the employees’ diligence, he himself was even more relentless, maintaining a constant state of concentration to the extent that his cheeks seemed noticeably slimmer.
"Yinyin, take a break." Ruan Yuan placed a freshly brewed cup of coffee on the table.
She kissed the side of his cheek, then moved behind his chair to massage his shoulders and neck.
Shi Yin gently patted her hand, a faint smile lingering in his tired eyes: "The Meng Family is already holding their board meeting."
"Did we succeed?" Ruan Yuan widened her eyes in disbelief.
She had assumed the Meng Family’s foundation would allow them to struggle for at least another ten or fifteen days; she hadn’t expected...
"Yes, their bankruptcy announcement should appear in about an hour." Shi Yin’s face showed unrestrained elation.
"Yinyin, you’re amazing." Ruan Yuan wrapped her arms around his neck, settling onto his lap and smothering him with a barrage of enthusiastic kisses.
Since their relationship had grown closer, she had started addressing him this way.
Initially, Shi Yin found it awkward, as though he were being treated like a child.
But later... let’s be honest, he grew to love it.
"You deserve some credit too." Shi Yin’s eyes glinted with pride. This was also the first major achievement he had accomplished since founding his company.
It not only proved his capabilities but also sent a clear message to those who dared to underestimate him that Shi Yin was not someone anyone could afford to offend.
"But I didn’t really do much to help."
Ruan Yuan looked a little downcast. Although she had graduated from a prestigious university, her work experience was practically nonexistent.
The gap between theory and real-world practice was stark, something only firsthand experience could truly illustrate.
"What nonsense is that?" Shi Yin cradled her face, resting his forehead against hers, their lashes brushing against each other subtly.
He exhaled lightly, "It was your constant encouragement that made all of this possible."
