Chapter 267: 246: Have a candy and don’t be angry anymore.
"Ah-Shi, listen." Wen Renche’s tone was firm.
He started the car, repeated his instruction for the girl to wait, and directly hung up the phone.
Not giving her the slightest chance to refuse.
Yu Zhi slowly put down the phone from her ear, glanced around, and found a bench to sit on.
The bright crescent moon hung at the edge of the sky, glittering alongside scattered stars, their glow dazzling.
Thin, cold strands of light, mixed with the soft amber of streetlights, quietly spilled through the gaps in the dense branches above.
A chill wind swept past, rustling the leaves with a sharp sound.
The girl drew her coat tighter around her, curling into a small bundle as she cupped her pale jade-like hands near her lips and exhaled warm breath onto them.
Her gaze rested on the passing cars, her long, feathery lashes trembling lightly, like a butterfly in delicate flight.
By the time Wen Renche arrived as fast as he could, that small bundled figure was still staring blankly in one direction.
He grabbed a blanket from the back seat, hurried to her side, and wrapped it tightly around her.
"Why aren’t you waiting inside?" Wen Renche saw her cheeks flushed red from the wind, his heart aching for her.
He placed his palm on her forehead, repeatedly confirming she didn’t show signs of fever before finally sighing with relief.
"I didn’t want to walk back there." Yu Zhi absorbed the blanket’s warmth, gradually feeling better.
She turned her head, only then noticing the injuries on his face.
Wen Renche’s lips and cheekbones bore deep bruises, and his disheveled hair hadn’t been tidied up yet.
Looking closer, it was clear his coat had traces of dust on it, his messy appearance unmistakably showing he’d just been in a fight.
Yu Zhi’s faint smile faded: "Who hit you?"
She reached out from the blanket, checking his shoulder blade where he’d previously taken a gunshot wound, her delicate brows furrowed tightly.
"I’m fine." Wen Renche held her hand, subtly brushing his thumb over it.
Though he cherished her warmth, he worried about her feeling cold.
After just a few moments, he gently tucked her hand back into the blanket: "I just accidentally bumped into something."
"Ah-Che, do you think I’m stupid?" Seeing his reluctance to tell the truth, Yu Zhi became somewhat upset.
Her face stiffened, frustration evident in her eyes.
Her rosy lips pressed tightly together, and for a moment, she truly didn’t want to engage, not caring to deal with him anymore.
"I’m the stupid one." Wen Renche took out a few pieces of candy from his pocket, coaxing her like a child: "Have some candy, no more anger."
"I don’t want it." Yu Zhi said so with her mouth, but her gaze couldn’t help but dart toward his outstretched palm.
Her duplicity drew a chuckle from Wen Renche.
Wary of irritating her further, he stifled the upward curve of his lips.
With deft fingers, Wen Renche peeled the candy wrapper and held out the pink candy close to her lips.
Seeing her hesitation to open her mouth, his throat shifted slightly, releasing a gentle laugh: "Not eating? Then I’ll—"
He deliberately stretched out the syllable, pretending to withdraw his hand.
But just as it moved barely a few inches from her, a warm sensation spread from his fingertips, traveling directly to his soul.
Yu Zhi took the candy, and as its pleasantly sweet yet not overwhelming flavor filled her mouth, she shot him a begrudging glare: "Don’t get into fights again next time."
Fighting was one thing, but getting injured while doing it.
Such a disgrace to her.
