Chapter 46: Chapter 46_1Glades Horne’s eyes crinkled with amusement. He pointed at Julia Bluen and said, hiding a smile, "Aren’t your clothes on you?" Julia Bluen paused, stunned for a moment. She patted herself down and then started to laugh too. She had been flustered by the Grandmother’s sudden arrival, which led to her searching for clothes while already wearing them, creating quite a comical situation. Noticing Glades Horne struggling to suppress his laughter, she slid out of bed, shot him an annoyed glance, and said irritably, "If you want to laugh, then laugh. You look even funnier trying to hold it in." HEH HEH! Glades Horne then laughed heartily without holding back. Julia Bluen punched him. Downstairs, the Grandmother, supported by Uncle Ying and his wife, walked into the room and sat down on the sofa. The Grandmother was in high spirits, her face alight with a sly smile, as if she had struck gold. She showed no signs of fatigue despite waking up early. The incident the previous night, where Glades Horne had driven Orlando Evans out of the Horne Villa, had startled quite a few family members. The Grandmother was overjoyed, having finally gotten rid of the annoying, hypocritical, and shameless Orlando Evans, who had designs on her golden grandson. After Glades had left home, the shrewd old lady immediately guessed he must have gone to the Bluen Villa to find Julia Bluen. That was why, early this morning, she had instructed Uncle Ying to fetch the set of keys—the betrothal gift—from the Bluen family and come here to stir things up. After all, she was old, a playful old dear, and felt no embarrassment. "Aunt Mei, please go to the kitchen and prepare breakfast," the Grandmother instructed after sitting down, not forgetting to have Aunt Mei prepare a meal for the young couple. They’ve finally had their bridal chamber night ahead of schedule, she thought with satisfaction. Now I don’t have to worry about any more changes to the wedding plans. Hmm, after such a long night, the young couple must be exhausted, she mused. Thinking this, the Grandmother became even more considerate. She called out to Aunt Mei, who was about to prepare breakfast, and whispered a few instructions in her ear. Aunt Mei nodded with a slight smile before turning towards the kitchen. This villa was cleaned daily, and the kitchen was always fully stocked. The refrigerator was filled with food that was restocked periodically, ensuring it was always ready for occupants, with meals available at any time. Aunt Mei had gone to prepare breakfast, and Glades Horne and Julia Bluen finally came downstairs. Glades Horne held Julia Bluen’s hand. Her expression was a little awkward, and her head was slightly bowed. If Glades hadn’t been holding her hand, she feared she might trip while walking. The Grandmother is so cunning, Julia Bluen thought, dead set on us having our bridal chamber night early. And now she’s actually shown up here first thing in the morning! Even if we haven’t done anything yet, I feel like I wouldn’t be able to clear my name even if I jumped into the Yellow River. However, considering she and Glades Horne were legally married, there was no need for such dramatic explanations. Her mood lightened somewhat at the thought. "Come, Julia, come over to Grandma," the Grandmother said the moment she saw the two, her face immediately beaming with happiness. She gestured for Julia Bluen to sit beside her. Once Julia obediently did so, the Grandmother’s eyes became like sharp knives, scrutinizing her from head to toe. Seeing Julia’s prettily flushed cheeks, she smiled with satisfaction. "Good! Grandma doesn’t have to worry anymore!" Her words are loaded with hidden meaning again! Julia Bluen glanced up, about to ask, when Glades Horne came over and sat down next to the Grandmother. He said teasingly, "Grandma, it’s a good thing Julia and I are married, otherwise you would have caught us in bed. By the way, how did you get in?" "We walked in with our feet," the Grandmother replied in the same teasing tone. She took Julia’s hand, looking at her with affection. "Don’t go out too much today," she said ambiguously yet caringly. "Get plenty of rest." At first, Julia didn’t catch the subtle hint in the Grandmother’s words. But once she did, her face turned as red as a beet. The Grandmother chuckled happily, spoke a few more caring words, and then changed the subject. Once she started talking, she went on and on, as if she had a whole bellyful of things to share with Julia. Julia maintained a gentle smile, patiently keeping the Grandmother company as she chatted. Glades, sitting to one side, no longer interjected, simply gazing deeply at Julia. In truth, the Grandmother liked Julia because, out of all the young people, only Julia had the patience to keep her company and listen to her talk without showing any sign of annoyance. Elderly people, especially those who feel lonely, always appreciate having someone to talk to. Yet, within such a large family, despite having a house full of children and grandchildren, everyone was busy with their own careers and lives. None of them really had the time to chat with her. Even when they did find some time, they didn’t understand what she truly desired, mistakenly thinking that providing the best material comforts was the extent of their filial duty. While chatting with the Grandmother, Julia thoughtfully poured her a cup of warm water to soothe her throat. "Grandma, I think after we’re married, I’ll have to bring Julia to live here," Glades joked, seeing the Grandmother moisten her throat. "Otherwise, you’ll try to steal my wife from me." "She’s mine during the day, and yours at night. We won’t interfere with each other," the Grandmother retorted casually, causing Glades to burst out laughing and Julia to blush. It was a truly tender and affectionate scene. Aunt Mei finished preparing breakfast. The couple then helped the Grandmother into the Side Hall, which served as the dining room. The three of them ate the breakfast Aunt Mei had prepared. Julia’s portion was especially nutritious, making it quite different from the others. She didn’t notice at first and continued eating. It wasn’t until she was nearly finished that she belatedly realized her portion was different from Glades’s and the Grandmother’s. By the time she figured out what extra nutrients were in her bowl, her cheeks were burning again. Aunt Mei must have added many nutrients beneficial for a woman’s health to my food, she realized. No wonder there was a faint taste of medicinal herbs. I thought everyone’s breakfast was the same and didn’t notice mine was special. The Grandmother must have been worried that Glades would drain all my energy, so she instructed Aunt Mei to prepare this nutritious breakfast for me. Although she felt shy, the Grandmother’s kindness warmed Julia’s heart. After breakfast, Glades had intended to take Julia shopping. However, Julia then received a call from her good friend, Rachel Bailey, asking to meet at Serendipity Cafe. Rachel’s voice sounded somewhat weary over the phone, which worried Julia greatly. Consequently, she declined Glades’s shopping trip to go meet her friend instead.
