A soldier who often chatted with Ruby Bluen to keep her from feeling too bored couldn’t resist walking over to help her pick up the pieces. "Sis, let me help you," he offered. He was also concerned that Glades Horne might only see Julia as a stand-in for her older sister. "Dad, don’t worry, I’ll be fine," Julia reassured him with a smile. She was confident Glades Horne did not see her as a substitute for her sister, yet this part perplexed her. Her three-year relationship with Nicholas Coldwell, though she had been forced to end it, was too recent; the pain still lingered in her heart like a knot.
