He moved past her to the elder lady’s side, where he and Julia Bluen sat on either side of her. Gian Horne and his wife could sense something unusual from his actions. After exchanging glances, they didn’t ask any questions, waiting instead for what would come next. "Uncle Ying, is dinner not ready yet?" asked Glades Horne in a deep voice. His first question was about the meal. It was getting late, and he was worried Julia might be hungry. Uncle Ying hurried out from the dining room, smiling as he responded, "Young Master Horne, it’s just been prepared." Glades Horne turned to look at Julia across from him, speaking gently, "Julia, help Grandma inside." After he finished speaking, he stood up first, helped the elder lady to her feet, and together with Julia, guided her to the main seat at the head of the dining table. Everyone was stunned, feeling that Glades’s behavior was somewhat odd. Soon, everyone was seated at the long dining table. "Big brother, what is going on here?" Adele Horne, seeing Julia sit down so nonchalantly, was filled with such fury that she burst out, questioning Julia loudly. Mila Anderson also spoke up, slightly displeased, "Glades, have you forgotten what happened yesterday?" James was the son of Gian Horne’s concubine, Pheobe Rogers. Pheobe was not permitted to live with the Horne family; only James had been brought back to be raised in the Horne residence. He was, however, barred from any involvement in the family’s enterprises. This was stipulated in an agreement signed with Pheobe Rogers when the Horne family allowed James to be formally acknowledged and return to the family. Due to being born out of wedlock, James had developed a somewhat cold and unpredictable personality. Glades Horne sat down by Julia’s side. His handsome face was cold and stern, his lips pressed tightly together. "Big brother, her sister treated you that way, aren’t you angry at all?" Adele changed her tone. To the similar inquiries from everyone, Glades remained silent, his lips tightly sealed. He didn’t even raise an eyebrow. Instead, he personally ladled a bowl of soup for Julia, placed it before her, and said, "Have some soup first." His attentiveness to Julia, as if no one else existed, greatly displeased everyone present, yet no one dared to utter a single word. Orlando Evans wore an expression of aggrieved innocence, gazing pitifully at Glades and Julia as if she were Glades’s wife and Julia the audacious home-wrecker. "Let’s give it to Grandma first," Julia said, looking toward the elder lady. At this dining table, the elder lady was the most senior, and they all had to show her filial respect first. With a turn of his hand, Glades swiftly transferred the bowl of soup in front of the elder Mrs. Horne. His dark, ink-like eyes gazed at the matriarch as he smiled faintly. "Grandma, this soup is from your eldest granddaughter-in-law, as a token of her respect." Eldest granddaughter-in-law? All present were taken aback. That sentence... didn’t it imply that Julia was Glades’s wife? How could that be possible? Had Glades Horne gone mad from Ruby’s flight from the wedding? Was he substituting the younger sister for the one who had fled? "Glades, what do you mean by this?" Gian Horne was the first to voice the confusion reflected in everyone’s eyes. Everyone stared blankly at the small red booklet Glades Horne had placed in the middle of the dining table. The three words ’Marriage Certificate,’ in dazzling gold lettering, seemed so real, so quietly embedded on the cover of the booklet. It was an ironclad fact. Grandma Horne, who had been silent all along, finally stood up. Her aged face showed little surprise, as if she had expected this all along. She extended her hand, picked up the marriage certificate, and examined it carefully. Then, smiling, she closed it, handed it back to Glades, and kindly cautioned, "A marriage certificate is a very important document. You must keep it safe and never lose it." "Big brother, why must you marry a woman from the Bluen family!" Adele Horne exclaimed, having recovered her senses. She shot Julia a harsh glance and questioned him angrily. SLAP! Grandma Horne suddenly picked up her chopsticks and slammed them down on the table, producing a sharp sound. It wasn’t excessively loud, but it carried an undeniable authority that instantly silenced everyone, their attention snapping to her. "A bride swap between sisters? Good! Very good indeed!" Nobody had expected Grandma Horne to utter words of such strong approval for Glades and Julia’s marriage. "Mother!" Mila Anderson and Adele Horne, mother and daughter, exclaimed in low voices simultaneously, wondering what had gotten into the old lady to actually praise such a situation. "Eat!" Grandma Horne, indifferent to what the women present were thinking or resenting, commanded with a stern expression. Seeing Grandma Horne’s stern face, Gian Horne, a son of supreme filial piety, turned to look at the two most important women in his life and spoke calmly, "Glades is the one getting married. He’s an adult now. As long as he doesn’t regret it, that’s all that matters. We, as parents, should not interfere." With that one statement, he indicated his acceptance of Julia marrying in her sister’s stead. A calm instantly fell over the dining table. Yet Julia could feel that beneath the surface calm, a storm was raging, one that would wait until she truly moved into the Horne household before surging towards her.
