He stood up with confusion etched on his face, his gaze flickering between Vanessa and Millie, both trembling in fear while staring at the people who now had their weapons drawn. "What are they looking at?" Grey asked, his voice slightly hoarse. Vanessa, her hands shaking, slowly raised a finger and pointed at his head. His hands crept up to his hair almost instinctively. That was when he realized—his hat had fallen off. Scanning the ground frantically, Grey spotted the hat lying a few metres away. Turning around more, his eyes finally caught sight of what had crashed into him moments ago. It was an injured man now struggling to stand, clearly trying to make a run for it. Grey narrowed his eyes, taking in the man’s appearance: red attire from head to toe. Shirt, pants, even his broken weapon were dyed in different shades of crimson. And now, his face had joined the lineup, battered and bruised. ’What is this? What’s going on?’ Grey thought inwardly, panic rising like a wave in his chest. His gaze flickered back to Vanessa, who clenched her fists tightly. "He’s part of them—a terrorist! Catch him!" someone in the crowd shouted, pointing directly at Grey. "Wait, a terrorist? I don’t even know who I am!" Grey said in shock, taking a step back as more townspeople surged forward with weapons drawn, their movements quick and ruthless until— "Stop!" Vanessa roared in anger, her voice echoing across the street and halting the crowd’s advance. She stepped forward, pulling Millie protectively along with her. "I don’t know what you are on about, but Grey is no terrorist!" Vanessa shouted, her glare sharp enough to cut through steel. "Tell it to his red hair!" another voice spat from the crowd, filled with venom and accusation. "My red hair?" Grey mumbled in confusion, his fingers running through the crimson strands. His mind raced as he recalled the injured man’s outfit and then Clarice’s warning earlier that morning. "Red attires, red hair, or anything red is forbidden in this town—or any part of the Aetherian faction—because it proves that the person is part of the terrorist organization!" someone in the crowd bellowed with righteous fury. "Terrorist organization?" Millie echoed with a raised eyebrow, tilting her head in confusion. "The Red Brigade? You don’t know them? Seriously, what are kids being taught nowadays?" a man groaned in disappointment, shaking his head. "The Red Brigade..." Vanessa muttered under her breath, her eyes widening as a long-buried memory surfaced. Her father had told her about them once, in a quiet moment at home. "They were a small terrorist clan that attacked the Aetherian faction, razing down half of the faction’s territories until the three powerful clans banded together to stop them." "Yes, those terrorists," another person confirmed, voice grim. "And what are their signs?" "Red..." Vanessa whispered, her eyes now fully widened in horror as she turned back to glance at the now-sweaty Grey, realization dawning on her face. "Now stand aside and let us deliver justice without you getting hurt, kid," someone demanded harshly, drawing his sword and pointing it forward. His voice was cold, void of empathy. "No!" Millie suddenly shouted, her small frame stepping right in front of Vanessa. Her tiny hands stretched outward in a protective stance. "No one is harming brother Grey! And anyone that wants to, would have to go through me first!" "Millie..." Vanessa’s voice trembled; she didn’t know what else to say. She stared down at her little sister, standing her ground with her arms outstretched, eyes fierce and unwavering. "Kid, you don’t know what you’re dealing with. Leave our way now, or we won’t have any mercy on you," a woman yelled from the crowd, brandishing a whip that cracked menacingly in the air. Vanessa’s heart pounded louder than the murmuring voices around her as she realized that this was no longer just about protecting Grey. It was about protecting Millie too—her stubborn, brave little sister who refused to back down even in the face of danger. "No! I won’t be moving from here at all. Do your worst!" Millie retorted, her voice loud and unwavering as she took a stance. "I promised Dad that I would protect him, and I intend on keeping that promise." She punched her fist into her palm with determination sparking in her eyes. ’Little Millie is trying to protect me? I don’t even know her that well, and she’s willing to stand her ground against grown adults? Is this family crazy or what?’ Grey thought, gritting his teeth in frustration and anger. "Fine! It looks like you need some serious spanking!" a man shouted as he prepared to dash forward, but just as his foot lifted, it froze mid-step. His body stiffened, locked in place, as though invisible chains were binding him. "What the—?!" he gasped, confusion plastered on his face. There were no visible bindings, no ropes or Ki restraints, yet he was utterly unable to move. "Come on now... trying to attack a kid?" a calm voice asked as a new figure stepped forward through the parted crowd. It was a young man who didn’t look older than twenty-five. He wore a yellow, tight-fitting outfit that outlined his broad shoulders and bulging muscles. His presence was casual, yet there was an unmistakable air of authority about him. "Wait—the Midnight Sun?!" someone from the crowd shouted, eyes wide in alarm. "Crap... This is bad," Vanessa muttered, her voice dropping as she caught sight of the insignia on the man’s chest—a sun, shining brightly against the yellow fabric. "What’s wrong? Who is he?" Grey asked, his voice low, sensing even Millie tensing up beside him. "He... he’s a member of the Midnight Sun. A clan that acts like the security of almost every town in the Aetherian faction. They’re like police or something—round up rogue warriors, stray Red Brigade members..." Vanessa whispered, her face tightening with unease. "Are they strong?" Grey asked with a raised brow, though the words left his mouth before he even realized it. ’Wait, why am I asking that? Not like I could even fight...’ "Can you defeat Finral?" Vanessa asked back sharply without looking at him. "Do I want to die?" Grey answered with a nervous chuckle. "Their members are even stronger than him," Vanessa replied, her tone grim and serious now. Grey gulped audibly, his throat dry as dust, as his gaze returned to the yellow-clad man making his way forward. The townspeople parted like water before him, each one stepping back with wary respect. "Terrorist. It would be wise for you to surrender now and not try anything funny with those kids," the man spoke, his voice calm but laced with steel as his yellow hair shimmered in the sunlight. "Terrorist? For the last time, I’m not a terrorist! Just because my hair is red doesn’t mean I’m a terrorist!" Grey shouted back, frustration boiling over as he clenched his fists tightly at his sides. "Well, it actually does," the man replied, scoffing as though Grey’s words were a child’s protest. "You could have dyed your hair any other colour, but red? That’s absurd. I refuse to believe any child is born with crimson hair." "How crazy are people in this place?!" Grey shouted again, shaking his head in disbelief. "Now..." The man’s stance shifted suddenly. His muscles bulged as though pulsing with energy, veins rising on his arms and neck. "Do you want us to do this the easy way or the hard way? Kids! Return home." "No! You won’t be taking my brother!" Millie shouted, stepping forward again. Her stance was shaky, but her spirit blazed bright. "Millie, get back here now!" Vanessa hissed urgently, reaching out to pull her sister back, but Millie pushed her hand away without hesitation. "Crap! This is all my fault..." Grey mumbled, his nails digging deep into his palms as guilt and anger churned inside him. His eyes locked onto the Midnight Sun warrior, body trembling. ’I... I... I wish there was a way for me to help!’ he thought, clenching his fists so tightly it hurt. And then— Zzzap! Sparks of lightning crackled faintly around his fingers, flickering for just a second before dying back down. ’What the hell was that?!’ Grey’s mind raced in shock. "Fine! Have it your way," the man declared. His voice carried finality like a judge passing sentence. "The Clan of the Midnight Sun does not tolerate terrorism, and trying to protect one makes you a terrorist too. Regardless of whether you are a child or not, I don’t care!" And with that, the man bolted. His body blurred, moving faster than Grey’s eyes could track—so fast it was as though he had simply disappeared, leaving only the wind in his wake. He was headed straight for Millie.
