'Shit! I need to help Charlotte and also protect Grey.' Max gritted his teeth as he prepared to leap into action when— "ARGHHH!" a scream pierced the air. He turned sharply. Vanica was pointing upward, her face pale with horror. Swirling ominously above them, the portal pulsed as hundreds of hawk beasts came pouring out once more like a dark plague of winged death. "Ugh… what the hell?!" Max muttered in frustration, his body crackling with barely contained lightning as he braced himself. Bang! He launched a barrage of lightning arrows skyward, each crackling bolt a streak of blue death aimed at the oncoming beasts. But the hawks, unnaturally agile, twisted and dove with eerie coordination, dodging every bolt with mocking ease as they swooped toward the group at terrifying speed. "Screw this!" Max shouted, eyes narrowing. He crouched low, then sprang into the air with a deafening crack, lightning bursting from his feet as he launched himself onto the back of one of the leading hawks. The hawk screeched violently, thrashing midair, but Max held on. Slamming both palms against its feathered hide, electricity surged from his fingertips, turning the beast's body into a conduit of pure pain. Then, with a brutal yank, Max twisted the beast's flight path, steering it toward the heart of the flock. "What is he doing?" Vorden gasped, eyes wide. "Is he crazy or something?" Gordon asked, alarm creeping into his voice. "Damn it! He might die. My magic can't reach him at that distance!" Arthur cursed, beads of sweat running down his temple. As if sensing the threat, the rest of the hawk beasts diverted their attention toward Max. In a horrifying synchronized motion, hundreds of them closed in on the lone rider glowing with fierce electric fury. Max stood tall atop the hawk's back, arms spread. Lightning coursed wildly across his body, wreathing him in blinding arcs of blue energy. His eyes gleamed like thunderbolts. "Here goes nothing," he whispered. And then he detonated. BOOOOOOM!!! A colossal explosion tore through the air with a thunderous roar. The entire arena trembled, the sky split with light so intense that everyone below had to shield their eyes. Beasts were incinerated in midair, and feathers turned to ash that rained down from the heavens like black snow. Max's body dropped from the epicenter, charred smoke trailing behind him. With a sickening thud, he crashed into the ground, the force cracking the arena floor and sending shockwaves that blew the surrounding stands to pieces. "Sir Max!" Vanica cried out, bolting toward his fallen form. Blood trickled from his forehead, arms, and lips. His chest rose and fell shallowly, but he was still alive. A broken chuckle escaped him. "Call me Max…" he rasped. Vanica quickly knelt beside him, her hands glowing with soft white light. Healing magic pulsed from her palms and wrapped around his wounds, knitting flesh and mending torn skin at an impressive pace. 'Oh! Healing magic? Impressive.' Max thought as he stared at Vanica concentrating hard to mend his wounds. "That was incredibly reckless," Arthur scolded as he approached, casting a wary glance toward the still-spinning portal in the sky. "Agreed. Only Grey pulls stunts like that," Vorden muttered with a shake of his head. "I guess he takes after me," Max chuckled, now sitting up, his body visibly drained. The portal above still churned ominously. "What now? Did that take care of those damn birds?" Gordon asked, squinting into the sky. Before anyone could answer, a familiar sound returned—flapping wings. Hundreds more hawk beasts burst out of the swirling vortex. "Nope. We didn't," Max sighed as he forced himself to his feet. "Can you still fight?" Arthur asked, concerned. "I've got mana left. I'm not done yet," Max replied, wiping blood from his chin. He turned his gaze to the sky and clenched his fist. "I didn't want to use this yet… but I don't have a choice." His eyes drifted to Charlotte, who had just felled an ogre with a final, elegant flourish of water magic. 'My little sister… you've come a long way.' He returned his gaze to the sky. "Using this will put me out of commission for a bit… but it better be worth it." His hair began to rise, floating as though caught in an invisible wind. His body radiated a soft, almost divine glow. His irises blazed with pure white light. "Breakthrough," Max said calmly. The air warped around him, and a deafening pulse of raw energy exploded from his body. Beasts in the sky wobbled mid-flight, thrown off balance by the overwhelming pressure. "AAAHHWWOOOO!" A colossal dragon of flame descended from the sky, roaring as it rained fireballs upon the wolves, scattering them like leaves in a storm. Its body, forged entirely of raging fire, twisted through the air like a serpent of destruction. Riding atop the fiery beast, a crimson-haired young woman leapt down, her eyes burning just as fiercely. Then— ZIP!
