Bang! The sound of something slamming into the earth wall echoed like a thunderclap through the arena. A heartbeat later, the barrier shattered into fragments, and Grey's body was sent flying across the battlefield, skidding violently along the cracked ground. Blood burst from his lips as he crashed down, motionless. "Guys..." Max's voice trembled as he watched the portals flaring open like demonic gateways, each humming with unnatural energy. The hair on his arms stood on end, his instincts screaming at him to flee. "Remember when I said we were dead the other time? Yeah... we're ultra dead now." "What do y—" Charlotte began, her eyes narrowing in confusion. But then she saw it—and her breath caught in her throat. The others followed her gaze, and horror dawned across their faces. From among the swirling vortexes of the dozen portals, three monstrous figures emerged, each more nightmarish than the last. The first was a towering gorilla-like beast, easily ten feet tall. It had ten muscular arms sprouting from its wide torso, each one corded with sinew and pulsing with raw power. A single twisted horn jutted from its forehead, and its blood-red eyes burned with primal rage. Its crimson skin shimmered with a faint metallic sheen under the arena's broken light. The second creature was an ogre that stood at a staggering twelve feet. In one hand, it gripped a massive war hammer stained with dried blood; at its waist hung an enormous sword, and a spear was slung across its back. Despite its brutal appearance, a twisted grin split its face, revealing rows of jagged teeth that hinted at a disturbing intelligence. The final figure was a monstrous wolf, the size of a small house. Its pitch-black fur absorbed the light around it like a void, rippling with dark energy. Crimson eyes glowed with menace, and its massive paws ended in claws that looked capable of tearing through steel. Two long, curved horns curled from its head, and beneath its snarling lips, rows of serrated fangs dripped with saliva. These weren't ordinary monsters. They were the apex predators—the bosses of the beasts that had come through the portal break. Arthur gulped audibly. "I didn't want to agree with you, Max... but yeah, we're definitely screwed. And just in case I die first, my favorite color is green, so someone get me a coffin in that shade." "Just shut up," Greg snapped, his voice shaking with fury and fear. "Now's not the time to joke!" "Joke? Who the hell is joking? I'm laying down facts here!" Arthur snapped back, clearly unraveling. "Wait... where's Grey? Where did he land? Please don't tell me he went unconscious again." Max groaned, anxiously scanning the battlefield. A surge of mana sparked in the air. "Like hell I'd go unconscious again!" Grey's voice rang out, slicing through the tension like a sword. Everyone turned to see him limping forward, blood trailing from the corner of his mouth, eyes burning with fury. His teeth were clenched, his fists curled tightly at his sides. He glared at the trio of monsters like they were nothing more than obstacles to crush. "Good to see you're still breathing," Kael said nonchalantly, standing a few paces behind. "If you'd passed out again, I'd have no choice but to zap you with another bolt. But honestly... I'd rather conserve my mana." Grey didn't even turn to respond. He narrowed his eyes and muttered, "Appraisal." A translucent blue screen materialized before his vision, scanning the monsters. And then his face went pale. [Appraisal Complete] Target Level: 16 Classification: Alpha-Class Beasts (Boss Tier) Grey staggered slightly. 'What the actual hell... All three of them are level 16?!' His voice cracked. 'How the fuck am I supposed to handle that?!' "Grey…" Raze called out softly, noticing the stiff tension in Grey's posture. "Why are you suddenly pale?" Grey didn't respond immediately. Instead, he slowly turned his head toward the others, then back to the towering beasts that—despite their overwhelming presence—remained eerily still. "Uhm… just to be sure," he said, his voice low, dry, and tight with dread. "What colour of coffins do you all prefer? I've already got Arthur's choice… now I need the rest of yours—because we're really going to die." Everyone except Kael went ghostly white. 'Did he just say what I think he did?' Dante swallowed hard, cold sweat running down his temple. 'Did Grey just admit defeat? He's never… never said anything like that.' Greg's fists clenched so tightly that his nails pierced into his palms, drawing blood. 'Grey's terrified… Grey. The guy who stood tall in every battle, who never wavered—even when everything was crumbling around him. If he's this shaken… then what chance do we even have?' Kael's usual aloof expression tightened. 'This guy… Grey. Even when facing me, he never showed fear. Not a flicker of doubt. And now… this?' The oppressive silence was suddenly broken. "Humans…" rumbled a deep, guttural voice that sent tremors through the air. Everyone snapped their attention toward the source—eyes widening in horror. The ogre—the grotesque twelve-foot behemoth with a twisted grin and eyes like molten coals—had spoken. "S-Sorry," Raze stammered, blinking rapidly. "I think my ears are busted. Did that beast just… talk?" "Unless we both went deaf and delusional at the same time, yeah," Dante muttered, disbelief etched on his face. "It definitely spoke." "You're weak," the ogre continued, its guttural voice mocking. "Fearful. Shaken. You crushed the foot soldiers and dared to think you could face the bosses? Call your leaders. Let's end this where it matters." The ground trembled beneath its words, as if the arena itself acknowledged the power in its voice. Kael casually stepped forward, hands tucked in his pockets, a defiant smirk still lingering on his lips. "Before we do that," he said, cocking his head, "how about you humour me, beast? How the hell are you able to speak?" "Does it matter?" Grey asked, now standing beside Kael, his jaw clenched and eyes locked on the beasts. "Actually? Not really." Kael gave a nonchalant shrug. And in one seamless motion, his hand lashed forward, unleashing a bolt of lightning as thick as a tree trunk. The bolt screamed through the air, crackling with deadly voltage, illuminating the battlefield with a burst of white-hot light. But the ogre merely chuckled—a low, bone-vibrating sound—and lazily pulled the massive sword from its waist. With a sickening thud, it swatted the lightning bolt aside with the flat of its blade. Bang! The deflected energy surged back at Kael at breakneck speed, faster than a heartbeat. "Kael, move!" Grey shouted, but it was too late. The bolt slammed into Kael with a thunderous explosion, hurling him like a ragdoll across the arena and into the far wall with a deafening crash. Dust and debris scattered as his body crumpled to the ground. "What the hell?!" Dave gasped, horrified. "That thing just wiped out Kael like he was nothing!" Panic erupted like wildfire. Magic flared from trembling hands. Everyone took a defensive stance. "We were warned…" the ogre growled, gesturing toward the hulking wolf beside him. Its black fur seemed to absorb the surrounding light, its claws gleamed like obsidian blades. "But we didn't believe. Humans… foolish and weak. Thank you for proving the tales right." With that, the wolf let out a low snarl that reverberated through the very bones of those present. "Grey!" a voice roared. Amir. He sprang to his feet, eyes blazing as he saw the wolf prepare to pounce. "You've already revealed all your affinities. Now is not the time to hold back! Call your damned familiar already!" "I don't need him to tell me what to do!" a familiar voice snarled in Grey's mind. It was Noir. The black wolf's voice thundered with irritation—and power. The wolf's horns suddenly sparked, and in a blinding instant, two beams of concentrated energy shot toward Grey like twin comets. There was no time to react. "But I do know that your weak arse can't handle what's about to happen," Noir growled. "So I will…" In a burst of black light, Noir materialized before Grey, his fur whipping violently in the storm of energy, his presence radiating raw might. Within seconds, the wolf expanded—massive muscles stretching and reshaping until he stood the size of a small house, fangs bared and horn glowing. "I will help." With a roar that split the skies, Noir raised his horn and unleashed two devastating beams of his own, the radiant black energy clashing against the incoming ones. Boom! The arena exploded with sound and fury, shockwaves rippling through the air like tsunamis. Dust and flame engulfed the stage as the titanic forces collided in a blinding tempest of light, heat, and mana. And in that chaos, one thing was clear— This was no longer just a battle.
