"Lin Li, didn’t you bring anything?"
Chen Yu Ying wasn’t carrying a backpack, but she had a crossbody bag and a suitcase she was dragging. It seemed heavy from the sound, so she curiously asked Lin Li, who appeared empty-handed.
"I brought a backpack full of snacks, another one with board games, plus drinks and some mysterious liquids. If you need anything, just let me know," Lin Li said with a smile.
His demeanor was confident, and what he said was even more so.
But beside him, Zhou Baowei, Bai Bufan, and Wang Ze: "?"
Are you being polite?
Are those even your things to take?
The three of them subtly gave him the middle finger but didn’t argue.
"No need, I brought a lot of stuff too," Chen Yu Ying patted her suitcase and replied with a smile.
The driver of the bus seemed to have just finished dinner at a small shop outside the school. Now, leisurely patting his stomach, he approached the bus, opened the door, and turned on the air conditioning inside.
He then got off again to open the storage compartment under the bus.
"Put any luggage you don’t plan to carry here! It won’t be opened until we reach the destination, so don’t put anything you’ll need on the way in there!" the driver shouted to everyone.
The students who were already there started putting their suitcases and other items inside.
"This is hard to lift!" The storage space for the luggage was quite high off the ground, so it needed to be lifted up to be placed inside, causing Ding Sihan to complain loudly.
"Class president, want me to help you lift it?" Lin Li offered to Chen Yu Ying.
"Huh? Sure, thank you," Chen Yu Ying nodded.
"Class president, you’re not like Patrick Star and filled it with rocks, are you?" Upon lifting it, Lin Li realized how dense the suitcase actually was.
It’s just a two-day, two-night trip, how could it be so heavy?
Lin Li was grateful that his physical fitness had improved significantly. Had he not improved his physical strength before, he could still have managed to lift it, but it would have been visibly strenuous, even a bit embarrassing.
But now, Lin Li could lift the suitcase effortlessly and place it inside.
"It just ended up this heavy after packing," Chen Yu Ying said, a bit embarrassed.
"Alright, it’s done. You can get on the bus now," Lin Li habitually clapped his hands and told Chen Yu Ying.
"You guys go up first. I need to count people with Teacher Xue down here, so I’ll be the last to board," Chen Yu Ying replied.
"Okay, then I’ll head up first," Lin Li nodded, turned to see Bai Bufan and the others had already gotten on the bus, and nodded again.
"Alright."
Lin Li turned to leave but suddenly felt a chill on his back.
Is it haunted again?
He turned his head to see Ding Sihan from Class Four, standing with an expressionless smile, holding a heavy suitcase, looking at him like she was seeing a ghost.
Was she the one who needed help just now?
Not sure, didn’t really remember.
"Ding Sihan, do you need my help?" Lin Li confirmed.
"How could that be?" Ding Sihan shook her head, saying each word slowly.
You can blow that pillow talk all you want!!!
...
After loading Ding Sihan’s luggage too, Lin Li boarded the bus.
The bus had a 3+2 seating format. There were over twenty minutes left before departure, and many had yet to arrive, leaving lots of empty seats. But Bai Bufan and Zhou Baowei had saved a spot for him, calling his name.
"I want the window seat, Baowei, move over," Lin Li said, not only ungrateful but pushing his luck.
"What’s that stuck behind your ear?" After sitting down, Lin Li noticed a small round patch behind Bai Bufan’s ear and curiously asked.
"Motion sickness patch. I get a little carsick, but on a bus of this quality, I should be fine playing on my phone today," Bai Bufan explained.
"Got it."
Lin Li nodded; he used to get carsick too, but he wasn’t sure if it was because of frequent travel or a change in his physical condition growing up. Eventually, it stopped occurring.
Car sickness is truly a dreadful experience.
"Wanna play games? Something exciting, colorful, side-scrolling single-handed shooting game?" Bai Bufan turned his phone sideways, suggesting.
"Angry Birds, right?"
"No, you guys go ahead, I’m just going to listen to music," Lin Li shook his head, pulling out two pairs of earphones from his pocket, put the wired ones costing over a thousand back, and wore a pair of Bluetooth earphones costing a bit over a hundred.
The music later is rather cheap.
...
The score was 14 against 60.
"That was quite a thrilling close loss," Bai Bufan lamented over his defeat.
He turned to check on Lin Li, finding him quite content, listening to music and reading a novel.
Playing games on a bus is rather shaky, so Bai Bufan decided to watch some downloaded videos and nudged Lin Li a few times: "Wanna watch ’Alien and Refugee’ together? The latest season, produced by the Remo team, pretty good quality."
"No, I’m listening to music," Lin Li shook his head, focused.
Upon hearing this, Bai Bufan directly took the earphone from Lin Li on his side and placed it in his own ear, murmuring, "Let me check out your music taste."
"Excuse me."
Oh, it’s an English song, not bad.
"Can you tell me how much the shirt is?—Yes, it’s nine fifteen. Look at the options, the shirt is priced at 9 pounds and 15 pence, so you choose item C and mark it on the test paper," a standard yet familiar robotic male voice slowly said.
"Whoosh—" The phone in Bai Bufan’s left hand suddenly slipped out, falling to the ground.
He froze.
After a while, Bai Bufan finally turned his head.
Upon closer inspection, he was shocked.
The text on Lin Li’s phone wasn’t a novel at all; it was a text-format English listening comprehension test!
"Why did your phone fall? Damn, Bufan, what’s with that face? We haven’t even started moving and you’re already carsick?" Zhou Baowei picked up the phone and handed it back to Bai Bufan, startled by Bai Bufan’s expression.
Bai Bufan didn’t say anything, his face pale, as he put the Bluetooth headphones he was holding onto Zhou Baowei’s ears.
Three seconds later.
"Swoosh——" Both of Zhou Baowei’s phones fell to the ground.
Silence.
Silence.
The storm is coming——
"Lin Li! You’re freaking crazy!" Bai Bufan roared at Lin Li, his eyes filled with panic and disbelief.
"Lin Li! Are you nuts?" Zhou Baowei followed closely behind.
Lin Li sneered, spreading his hands in a loose grip, closing his eyes, with an expression of enjoyment: "This is real music."
English written exams rely on memorizing vocabulary, generally not losing points, but listening is different, it’s always been a weak point for Lin Li, and it needs language sense to solve the problem, relying solely on memory is not enough.
Need to do more listening.
To rank in the top hundred in the next monthly exam, this is the price one must pay.
But in the eyes of Bai Bufan and others, this is a blatant betrayal.
"Hey! I don’t care who you are, you’ve been using Lin Li’s body long enough, right? Enough already, give us back the Lin Li we know!" Bai Bufan righteously shouted to the demon inside Lin Li, then hesitated: "Why don’t you possess me and make me fall in love with studying too?"
Lin Li sneered and looked at Bai Bufan, reached out: "Give me back the headphones, I want to continue listening to music."
"No way! Lin Li, have you forgotten Old Jian’s words? He said if you’re going out to play, just play properly. Turn off the listening practice right now, switch to Xiaomo’s rap or ’Eighteen Touches’, or I’ll die right here!"
Bai Bufan refused to return the headphones and threatened him sorrowfully.
"Before you die, can you loan me some cash? I’ll send you the list of loan apps, you just need to download them now." Lin Li’s eyes lit up.
Bai Bufan: "..."
This buddy is really a buddy, huh.
"Did you see my look? Three parts sorrow, three parts nostalgia, four parts despair, Lin Li, quickly remember who you are, quickly recall our good old days!" Bai Bufan’s voice was mournful.
"Let your eyes tone down the sector graph." Lin Li was unmoved, listening with just one headphone, preparing to continue doing exercises.
Zhou Baowei’s expression shook, his head moved closer, seriously staring at Lin Li: "Speaking of sector graphs, Japan’s flag is a sector graph showing all places in the world that were hit by atomic bombs, did you know this, Lin Li?"
Lin Li paused slightly, looked at his phone, licked his lips a few times, and finally turned his head to Zhou Baowei:
"Bao Wei, do you hate Japan so much because you’re chubby, and you’ll explode if you cross over?"
Bai Bufan’s eyes lit up, Bao Wei indeed knew Lin Li’s user manual—the Hell joke segment indeed piqued his interest.
"The priests think Japan is the most beautiful place to preach because little boys fall from the sky here!" Whatever the reason, Lin Li finally stopped listening to those annoying listening files, which was worth celebrating, so Bai Bufan also said.
Lin Li thought for a while and spoke:
"Every time Japan’s college entrance examination rolls around, Japan’s perverts increase dramatically because these guys have figured out the mindset of girls taking exams — the college entrance exam is a major life event, and mistakes mustn’t be made. So even if harassed, girls dare not speak out and can only endure silently.
This was exposed by the media and caused a sensation, people condemned these despicable perverts, parents were even more anxious.
To prevent their children from being bullied, fathers took leave to escort their daughters to exams.
Thus, the perverts in society doubled."
"I have, I have more..."
"..."
From the front row, Wang Ze stood up and turned around, as a righteous sports student, he couldn’t bear it anymore: "You guys seem to be a little too Hellish."
"Just now Buddha messaged me on QQ, said it’s okay to laugh freely this time, no loss of virtue." Lin Li waved, watching Wang Ze trying not to laugh.
"Then carry on, sounds good, love to listen." Wang Ze immediately grinned, "You three are really attacking from all angles, impressive."
"It’s not really a full attack," Lin Li waved again, "We don’t criticize three things about Japan: music, anime, and ’movies’."
Bai Bufan and Zhou Baowei nodded in agreement.
Wang Ze scratched his head in confusion: "Music, anime, and what’s the third one?"
The three snickered in unison, sports students are just sports students, this is a difference of paths, no mutual consultation.
"Darn, it’s music, anime, ’movies’!" Wang Ze belatedly realized.
...
"Alright, I really have to continue listening now, I have a bet with Wang Yuezhi..." After being Hellish for a while, Lin Li spoke about his bet with Wang Yuezhi, "...so, nothing can stop me from studying on the way to Pingjiang."
"How dare you make such a bet?" Bai Bufan exclaimed unexpectedly.
"The class president is the notary? Isn’t this bringing shame to yourself?" Zhou Baowei was equally surprised.
They also couldn’t believe Lin Li could reach the top hundred in the next monthly exam without cheating.
That’s too far-fetched.
Although they didn’t understand, they reluctantly accepted Lin Li’s plan to study on the way.
A listening exercise ended.
Lin Li glanced at the scenery outside the window.
The afterglow of the setting sun was like a golden thread, piercing through the clouds, illuminating the entire sky.
One could see this scenery every day from the classroom, but it always seemed a bit prettier now.
Maybe it’s a different mood.
The time was about right to depart, everyone should have arrived, Lin Li saw Xue Jian and Chen Yu Ying and Ding Sihan who was accompanying her checking the door of the storage space, then walking toward the car.
Rest for a minute and then listen to another passage.
With this in mind, Lin Li closed his eyes.
