Chapter 121: Chapter 121- Sorry
Bert’s eyes lit up with a hint of surprise when he saw her like that. He quickly stepped forward, carrying the breakfast he had just bought, and carefully set up the small tray on her hospital bed. Lilian smiled faintly and said thanks, then lowered her head to eat.
But as soon as she took a bite, a wave of intense disgust washed over her again, making it impossible to swallow anything.
Thinking of her parents, she gritted her teeth and forced herself to sip a few spoonfuls of porridge, but that was all she could manage. She pushed the bowl away, feeling awkward, and shook her head at Bert.
"I really... can’t eat anymore..."
Bert didn’t push her. He simply said,
"If you can’t eat, it’s fine. Eat when you feel like it."
Lilian nodded. While Bert was tidying up, she instinctively reached for her phone to check the time—but then realized it was switched off.
Yesterday, when Bert had driven her away, Morrison had called her.
She hadn’t answered. She had chosen to turn it off.
She didn’t know what he wanted after their breakup, but she was certain of one thing: she didn’t want any connection with a man who didn’t want her anymore.
She put the phone down, leaving it off.
Then she turned to Bert.
"Bert... when you take me home later, can we stop by a phone store first? I want to get a new phone."
Her old phone... she was done with it.
The number didn’t matter anymore, and neither did the memories stored inside.
Bert glanced at her, noticing how decisively she set the phone down, and felt a small sense of relief. He smiled and nodded.
"Alright. What kind do you want? I’ll get it for you."
The first step was clear: sever all ties with Morrison.
On the way back, Bert took Lilian to the phone store, just as she had wished. Lilian had originally planned to pick a simple, second-hand phone, but Bert wouldn’t hear of it. He insisted she take her time to choose properly. Lilian didn’t really have the heart to pick anything, so in the end, it was Bert who carefully helped her select one while she just stood by.
Having had little contact before, Lilian didn’t know much about Bert. Watching him so focused on helping her choose a phone, she realized he was the type of person who took things seriously—once he decided to do something, he had to do it perfectly.
So she let him take the lead. In the end, Bert helped her pick a stylish phone, comfortable to hold and smooth in performance, and even set up a new number for her. As for her old phone and number, Lilian had wanted to throw them away, but Bert said that there was too much personal information inside. It would be better to hand it to him first so he could wipe everything clean before discarding it.
Lilian didn’t care. Everything stored in that phone was part of a past she never wanted to revisit anyway—it was better to erase it all.
Bert had asked for her phone for another reason too. He knew it must contain countless memories with Morrison. And he had a plan... oh yes, he had plans to use those photos to get under Morrison’s skin. He wouldn’t let Morrison off easy. If there were any pictures of them together, Bert would casually send a few to Morrison from time to time, making him squirm—even if he had a new love, he would feel the sting every day.
After dropping Lilian off at Tiffany’s building, Bert said goodbye. Before leaving, he reminded her,
"Go home and get ready for the trip abroad. I’ve already told your brother."
Lilian nodded.
"Mm."
Bert hesitated for a moment, then added,
"I was originally planning to take you with me. I don’t want you to waver or change your mind."
Yesterday, she had volunteered to go to the U.S. with him—surely a bit of impulsive sadness had been behind it. Thinking about it at home might make her hesitate, so Bert gave her a preemptive warning.
Lilian shook her head.
"No... I really want to leave here."
A faint, self-mocking smile flickered across her pale face as she said,
"I guess I have no choice but to leave, right?"
A man like Morrison... changing women like changing clothes. He dumped her yesterday, and who knew—maybe he already had someone new today. Why should she stay here and humiliate herself?
Back when she graduated from university, her parents and even her brother Dave had asked for her opinion about going abroad. After all, in their social circle, people with her kind of background usually chose to study overseas. Most of her classmates, both male and female, had gone abroad.
But she had chosen to work. She hadn’t gone because she couldn’t bear to leave her parents. She had never been apart from them her entire life. And at that time, her parents and her brother’s marriage were having problems—how could she leave without worry?
Yet, in the end, life had its own way. After all the twists and turns, she still had to leave.
If she had known it would turn out like this, she might as well have left right after graduation. At least then she wouldn’t have met Morrison, wouldn’t have started such a bone-breaking, heart-wrenching relationship... wouldn’t have ended up shattered in every way.
Yes... she really did feel utterly shattered.
On the surface, she seemed fine. No one knew the painstaking journey she had taken—from never daring to love, to finally summoning the courage to give her heart. Yet he had discarded her mercilessly, leaving her feeling that she might never love again.
Bert watched her with that faint, bittersweet smile, his heart aching.
"Good... as long as you’re determined to leave. Just go home quickly."
Lilian nodded and turned to go upstairs. Bert drove off; with no end in sight for this departure, he had plenty to handle himself.
When Lilian got home, everyone was there.
She forced a small smile.
"You’re all here? Oh, you’re making a fuss over nothing. I’m fine."
Then she cheerfully walked toward them.
Daniel, heart aching for her, immediately stood up and grabbed her hand, leading her toward the bedroom.
"Come with me!"
Tiffany got up and followed. The remaining three—Dave and his family—stayed behind. Laurent sighed.
"I’ll make her something to eat."
He knew about Lilian’s loss of appetite and figured his cooking might help. Even if she only took a few bites, it would be something.
Lilian followed Daniel into the bedroom. Daniel pulled a bank card from his pocket and handed it to her.
"This is the money Dad prepared for your trip abroad. Go without looking back."
Lilian froze, staring at the card. Tears welled up instantly, blurring her vision.
Tiffany turned away. Lilian’s throat tightened, and tears flowed freely.
"Sorry, Mom and Dad... I’ve made you worry."
What was she even doing? It was just a breakup, yet she had thrown the whole family into panic.
She hated this side of herself.
