Zhou Yuwen was still wearing the school-issued gray T-shirt with the camouflage pants, looking quite tall and sturdy.
And Zheng Yanyan, youthful and pretty, was in a white shirt paired with dark blue denim shorts. The two standing together were like a talented and beautiful college couple; the director needed no guesswork to ascertain their relationship.
"How did you know the fence behind the cafeteria was broken?" Having finished a game of Fight the Landlord, the director asked leisurely and curiously.
"I like to wander around when I have nothing to do at night, and I discovered it when I walked to that area."
"Oh." The director nodded, looking at Zheng Yanyan, who was bowing her head in boredom.
"Girlfriend?"
"Um,"
"Boyfriend?"
"Yes."
Zheng Yanyan nodded her head.
"You two are quite a match."
"Hehe, thank you, Director!" Zheng Yanyan felt that director was quite approachable upon hearing this.
Zhou Yuwen patted Zheng Yanyan, signaling her to stop messing around.
But Zheng Yanyan shrugged it off and made a face at Zhou Yuwen.
The director saw this and slightly pursed his lips; hailing from the south, he spoke with a distinctive inflection, commenting that the young man was quite romantic.
"Even took her to KFC, huh! Is KFC tasty?"
"It is delicious, Director, haven’t you ever eaten there before?" Zheng Yanyan asked.
"What are you thinking, how could the director possibly have never eaten at KFC." Zhou Yuwen quipped.
Zheng Yanyan immediately said, "But what if the director’s wife is strict, and he can’t have it?"
"..."
Zhou Yuwen gave Zheng Yanyan a look, letting her figure it out for herself.
Zheng Yanyan, however, stuck her tongue out at Zhou Yuwen.
The director, finding it uninteresting, exclaimed, "Alright, alright, save the lovey-dovey stuff for when you get back home."
"So we can go back now?" Zheng Yanyan’s face lit up with surprise.
"Oh my, little girl, I find not only is your appearance beautiful, but your thinking is quite pretty too!"
"Hehe, thank you for the compliment, Director!"
The director picked up his thermos, slowly and methodically took a sip, and said, during military training, indeed there was a rule against hoarding snacks.
Zheng Yanyan’s face fell upon hearing this.
But the director continued, "However, seeing as it’s your first offense, I won’t penalize you this time."
"Thank you, Director! You’re such a good person, no wonder, the moment I saw you, I felt a closeness!" Zheng Yanyan was overjoyed inside; she had been quite scared just before.
The director, however, waved it off, saying punishment wasn’t necessary, but there had to be consequences for mistakes.
"Both of you, write me a self-criticism of two thousand words each," the director said.
This demeanor annoyed Zheng Yanyan a bit. Hey, I’m so touched, and you show no feeling at all.
"Hey, when you spoke up just now, what were you thinking?"
"What do you mean, what was I thinking?"
"Didn’t you consider that if you took the blame for me, you might be the one getting punished?"
"They wouldn’t punish me for such a small matter."
"But what if they did?"
"Then I’d just take the punishment."
"So then you would have taken the blame for me?"
"If I have to, then I will."
The two of them walked on the school path, flanked by the tall and dense Metasequoia forest, shadowy under the moonlight.
The moon made the concrete path appear somewhat pale.
Their shadows stretched long on the concrete road as they chatted, intermittently.
It was mostly Zheng Yanyan asking the questions.
And Zhou Yuwen answering them.
Zheng Yanyan said, "Zhou Yuwen, do you know, you’re really asking for a beating."
"Oh? Do you want to hit me?"
Zhou Yuwen stopped in his tracks, turned around, and looked at Zheng Yanyan.
Originally, Zheng Yanyan was just following Zhou Yuwen.
His sudden turn startled Zheng Yanyan.
At that moment, standing close, Zhou Yuwen’s face, sharp and clear under the moonlight, was especially vivid.
"No,"
Zheng Yanyan replied, and Zhou Yuwen rolled his eyes at her.
But the corners of Zheng Yanyan’s mouth curled up into a mischievous smile.
The moonlight tonight was exceptionally bright, casting clear shadows of the boy and girl.
On the ground, the boy’s shadow had sharp contours and was half a head taller than the girl’s.
The girl’s shadow showed her long hair, her figure, and her straight, slim legs, even the outline of her denim shorts was discernible.
"Zhou Yuwen,"
"What is it?"
"Do you want to be my boyfriend?"
"?"
On the ground, the girl tiptoed, and before the boy could react, she turned her head to the side.
"Mwah."
