Kars glanced at Su Jiyai, still gripping his weapon. “We were just discussing how to get past those beasts. We need a distraction,” he said. Blaze smirked, clearly still annoyed. “Why don’t we send Ragnar? Since he likes sneaking around so much.” Su Jiyai raised an eyebrow but didn’t rise to the bait. She was too focused on the mission. “What’s the plan?” she repeated calmly. Kars sighed and shook his head at Blaze. “Cut it out, Blaze. We need teamwork here, not bickering.” He then looked back at Su Jiyai. “Here’s the idea: Mei and Juliet will use their power to create an illusion on the far side of the clearing. The beasts will get curious and hopefully head over there. That’s when we sneak inside the mine.” Su Jiyai nodded, but her mind was already working on a backup plan, just in case things didn’t go as smoothly as they had hoped. “Sounds simple enough,” she said, trying not to show her doubts. “Let’s move then,” Kars said, giving a nod to Mei and Juliet. The two women stepped forward, their hands glowing faintly. A shimmering light appeared at the far edge of the clearing, taking the shape of a small group of people. The monsters, as predicted, noticed the illusion almost immediately. One of them let out a loud snarl, and within seconds, the whole pack started heading toward the fake group. “Now’s our chance,” Kars whispered, motioning for everyone to follow him. The group moved quickly and quietly, staying low as they approached the mine entrance. The beasts were still distracted by the illusion, giving them just enough time to slip past. Su Jiyai kept her eyes on the monsters, ready to react if anything went wrong. But they managed to reach the entrance without being spotted. Once inside, Kars let out a small sigh of relief. “Alright, that went better than I expected,” he said, though his expression stayed serious. “But we’re not out of danger yet. The mine goes deep, and there could be more creatures inside.” Blaze rolled his eyes. “Great. More monsters. Just what we needed.” Ignoring him, Su Jiyai scanned the dark tunnel in front of them. The air inside the mine was thick and musty, and the only light came from the glowing crystals embedded in the walls. But what stunned her was how similar the crystals looked to the zombie crystals. Even their sizes were the same! “But let’s mine these energy crystals. a single energy crystal can be sold for 10,000 federal coins,” Kars said. “So they are valuable, huh?” Su Jiyai muttered. Kars pulled out a small pickaxe from his bag and handed it to her. “Yeah, they’re valuable. We’ll each take turns mining. These crystals can power a lot of things, so don’t waste them.” Blaze grabbed his own pickaxe and grinned. “Finally, something useful.” Mei and Juliet nodded and started picking at the walls, carefully chipping away at the crystals. Su Jiyai watched for a moment before starting to mine herself. She wasn’t here for crystals, but it wouldn’t hurt to collect a few. As she chipped away at the wall, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was watching them. Her instincts were rarely wrong, and the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. She paused for a moment, glancing back down the tunnel. Nothing. Just darkness. “Stop daydreaming, Ragnar,” Blaze sneered, noticing her hesitation. “We’re not here for a sightseeing tour.” Su Jiyai rolled her eyes and continued mining. She couldn’t waste too much time here. Kars was busy filling his bag with crystals when a low rumbling sound echoed through the mine. Everyone froze. “What was that?” Mei whispered, her voice shaky. Kars held up his hand, signaling for everyone to be quiet. The rumbling got louder, and the ground beneath their feet started to shake. “Uh… Kars?” Juliet asked nervously. “Is that… normal?” Kars’s face was grim. “No. Everyone, stay alert.” Suddenly, a loud crash came from deeper inside the mine, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps. Su Jiyai’s heart raced. Whatever was coming their way, it was big. “Back up! Back up!” Kars ordered, motioning for everyone to retreat toward the entrance. They scrambled back, but it was too late. From the darkness, a massive creature emerged. It had thick, rocky skin, like the stone walls of the mine, and glowing red eyes. Its huge claws scraped against the ground as it lumbered toward them. “A Rockback!” Blaze shouted, his face pale. “We’re dead!” Kars gripped his weapon tightly. “Stay together! Don’t panic!” The Rockback let out a deafening roar, shaking the entire cave. It was clear that running wouldn’t be an option. They’d have to fight their way out. Julliet asked in a trembling voice, “What’s the plan?” Kars didn’t hesitate. “We attack together. Aim for the joints. It’s slow but strong. We can’t let it pin us down.” Blaze let out a nervous laugh. “Easier said than done!” Su Jiyai prepared herself, taking a deep breath. “Alright,” Kars said. “On my signal—” Before he could finish, the Rockback charged forward, faster than they expected. “Move!” Kars yelled, diving to the side as the creature barreled past. Su Jiyai dodged to the left, barely avoiding the Rockback’s massive claws. It slammed into the cave wall, sending chunks of rock flying everywhere. “Hit it now!” Kars shouted. Blaze and Kars both swung their weapons at the creature’s legs, trying to hit the joints. The blows barely left a mark on its thick skin, but they kept at it. Mei and Juliet used their powers to create illusions, trying to confuse the Rockback, but it didn’t seem to care. It was focused on them. Su Jiyai knew she had to do something. She couldn’t just sit back and watch. “Time to roast this thing,” she muttered. With a flick of her wrist, flames erupted from her hands, and she aimed them at the Rockback’s exposed leg joints. The creature let out a roar as the fire hit its vulnerable spots, causing it to stumble for a moment. “Nice one, Ragnar!” Kars shouted. But the Rockback wasn’t done yet. It turned its attention to Su Jiyai, its glowing red eyes locking onto her. The Rockback charged at her, its claws ready to strike. Su Jiyai jumped to the side, narrowly avoiding the attack. She rolled across the ground, quickly getting back on her feet. “Hey, ugly! Over here!” Blaze yelled, throwing a rock at the creature’s head. The distraction worked. The Rockback turned toward Blaze, giving Su Jiyai a chance to regroup. Kars moved in, slashing at its leg again. “Keep hitting the joints! It’s slowing down!” The Rockback roared, clearly furious now. Blaze stood there, frozen in place, as the massive creature locked onto him. His eyes widened with fear, and for a moment, he didn’t move. “Blaze, move!” Kars shouted, but Blaze was too stunned to react. The Rockback charged at him, its claws ready to slice through anything in its path. Just as it was about to strike, Juliet, out of nowhere, leaped forward, pushing Blaze out of the way. Blaze hit the ground hard, but he was safe. Juliet, on the other hand, wasn’t so lucky. The Rockback’s claws slashed across Juliet’s side, and she let out a scream of pain. The force of the hit sent her flying across the cave, crashing into the wall with a sickening thud. Juliet’s face was pale, and she was gasping for breath. Blaze scrambled to his feet, his face pale as he stared at Juliet, clearly shaken. “Juliet… she… she saved me,” he stammered, guilt washing over him. Kars rushed over, kneeling beside Juliet. His face was grim as he checked her wound. “It’s bad… really bad,” he muttered, his voice low. Juliet winced, trying to speak through the pain. “I… I couldn’t let him die,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “Stupid! Stupid! Why did you do it!” Blaze cried. Julliet lifted her hand and said in a ragged breath, “I…lo…ve you…” Blaze’s eyes widened, and tears streamed down his face. “Why…why didn’t I understand before…I thought you liked…Ragnar…and hence I never proposed to you! Ugh! I am sorry! I love you, too! Please don’t leave me! I can’t live without you!” Julliet smiled as if she would die soon. Su Jiyai, not being able to bear to see the scene and said, “Alright, stop overeacting. She won’t die.” With how casually they were having a conversation in between fights, Su Jiyai started to doubt their survival skills. Stupid people. Without a word, she turned toward the monster and said, “I didn’t plan to take you seriously before, but now…looks like I need to deal with you.” The massive creature roared again, its red eyes glowing brighter. It stomped the ground, preparing to charge at her. But Su Jiyai wasn’t fazed. She had fought bigger and stronger enemies before, and this thing was just another obstacle.
