She watched as its head, which had nearly been crushed by her blow, slowly started to regenerate, the shattered bones knitting back together right before her eyes. “When did these zombies gain regeneration abilities?” she muttered under her breath, her brow furrowing as she stepped back, keeping a cautious distance from the recovering creature. [Host, while you were in a coma, about a year ago, lower-level zombies started to evolve. Level 1 and 2 zombies didn’t change much, but Level 3 and above gained regeneration abilities. She quickly sidestepped and smacked it with her trusty C-rank rolling pin, sending it sprawling into a pile of rubble. The fight was becoming more and more challenging. Sure, her rolling pin had served her well in the past, and the colander on her head—an A-rank artifact—protected her from head injuries, but against these regenerating zombies, her tools felt like children’s toys. She knocked a zombie down with a solid hit, only for it to pop back up like a spring-loaded jack-in-the-box. “Okay, this is getting ridiculous,” Su Jiyai muttered, wiping the sweat from her brow. She swung her rolling pin in a wide arc, bashing two zombies at once, but they just kept coming. Should she buy a new weapon? But it is too costly! Su Jiyai didn’t lack money now. But due to her system’s sneaky behavior time and time again, she felt the urge to save as much as she could. “System is there any way to save money on the weapons? They can barely form a coherent growl.” Just then, a group of five Level 3 zombies closed in on her, snarling and snapping their jaws. Su Jiyai’s eyes darted around the battlefield, quickly assessing her options. She spotted a nearby stack of broken crates and had an idea. “System,” she whispered under her breath, “get ready to hide my presence again.” [Host, are you going to retreat?] “Retreat? Never,” Su Jiyai said, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “I’m going to trick them. Watch.” She darted toward the pile of crates, kicking up dust as she moved, and as the zombies followed her in hot pursuit, she suddenly leaped onto one of the higher crates and crouched down. Then, she called out, “Now, system!” In an instant, her presence disappeared, leaving the zombies confused and disoriented. They stopped in their tracks, groaning and sniffing the air, trying to locate their lost prey. Su Jiyai grinned to herself as she watched them mill around aimlessly beneath her perch. “Okay,” she muttered, clutching her rolling pin tightly. “Time for some classic guerrilla tactics.” Without warning, she leaped off the crates and brought the rolling pin down hard on the closest zombie’s head. Before the others could react, she vanished again, moving swiftly to another position while the confused zombies turned to face empty air. Over the next few minutes, Su Jiyai played a deadly game of hide-and-seek with the regenerating zombies. She would reappear just long enough to land a solid blow, then vanish before they could retaliate. It was a slow, frustrating process—especially since the zombies’ regeneration meant that none of her hits were permanent—but it was better than being overwhelmed. At one point, she found herself in a tight spot, surrounded by three zombies. She grinned to herself, adjusted the colander on her head, and whispered, “Time for the secret technique.” She threw the rolling pin high into the air, and as the zombies instinctively followed the motion with their lifeless eyes, she dropped to the ground and rolled between their legs, springing up behind them with her arms outstretched. “Catch!” she shouted, as the rolling pin came back down, smacking into the heads of all three zombies like a perfectly executed bowling strike. The zombies stumbled and fell, and Su Jiyai snatched the rolling pin back before it hit the ground. “I’m starting to feel like a chef in a post-apocalyptic cooking show,” she muttered, wiping more zombie goo from her weapon. “Today’s special: mashed zombie brains.” [Host didn’t you say you want to test your powers?] “I did. The best power a human could possess is intelligence. I can be tired and out of stamina any time, but my intelligence could never be tired. That is the benefit of training it.” Su Jiyai muttered. But despite her efforts, the fight was wearing her down.
