But something told him he didn’t have the luxury of waiting for an examination. Maybe even the medics are against him now. With a sharp intake of breath, the general summoned the last dregs of his teleportation energy and, with a flash, disappeared from the hallway. When he reappeared, he collapsed onto the cold, sterile floor of the medical room, gasping for breath. The sudden loss of energy made the room spin, and for a moment, he thought he might lose consciousness right there. ‘No,’ he willed himself. ‘I can’t. Not yet.’ Pulling himself up, the general staggered toward the nearest examination table, his legs feeling like lead. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt this weak. His once-invincible body was betraying him, and the more he tried to summon his energy, the more it slipped through his grasp like sand in a clenched fist. His thoughts flickered back to Jake. That conniving bastard had always been two-faced, playing the loyal soldier while harboring his own ambitions. And then there was the blue cat—a creature of unnatural power, appearing out of nowhere just when things had started to go wrong. The more he thought about it, the more convinced he became. Jake and the cat were behind this, but without proof, he was just a paranoid man grasping at straws. The general’s breath hitched as he remembered Dr. Mei and Dr. Pan. ‘Oh right! Where are they? God! They must have been harmed by the blue cat too!’ Their absence, coupled with his sudden weakness, painted a picture too clear to ignore. He couldn’t let this go unanswered. His superiors had to know. They had to send reinforcements to deal with Jake and that damn blue cat. His head pounded as he dragged himself out of the medical room, his legs barely supporting him. Each step felt heavier than the last, but his will pushed him forward. He couldn’t collapse now. Not before he made the call. The hallways were eerily empty, the usual hustle and bustle of soldiers absent. It was as if everyone had disappeared, leaving the general to his own fate. Normally, he would have called out to one of the soldiers to help him or at least fetch the satellite phone. But something stopped him—a creeping suspicion that the soldiers might no longer be under his command. After all, the soldiers who just now attacked him were his trusted subordinates too! Clearly, they can’t be trusted anymore. With gritted teeth, the general forced his legs to keep moving until he reached the control room door. He fumbled for the handle, almost falling as he pushed it open. Inside, the room was dimly lit, the consoles casting a soft glow on the empty chairs. Usually, the room would be staffed around the clock, but now it felt like a tomb, abandoned and cold. His eyes zeroed in on the satellite phone sitting on the central console. It was his only lifeline now, his last chance to set things right before he lost consciousness. Every muscle in his body screamed as he dragged himself toward the console, finally collapsing into the chair in front of it. With shaking hands, he reached for the phone and dialed the encrypted number that connected him directly to his superior. The ringing tone seemed to stretch on forever, each second an eternity as his vision began to blur again. He couldn’t black out. Not now. Finally, the line connected, and a gruff voice answered. “State your identification.” The general didn’t waste time with formalities. “It’s me,” he rasped, his voice barely above a whisper. “General Yi… I need immediate reinforcements at the base.” There was a pause on the other end of the line. “General Yi? Is this really you?” his superior asked, the tone sharp with suspicion. “You don’t sound right. Is this some kind of impersonation attempt?” The general’s heart pounded in his chest, both from the strain and the rising frustration. “Damn it, it’s me!” he barked, though his voice cracked under the strain. “Who else would be calling from this line? Listen to me!” Still, the superior hesitated. “If you’re really General Yi, you’ll need to prove it. Tell me something only you and I would know.” The general’s hands trembled, both from exhaustion and the cold fury boiling inside him. Of course, his superior would demand proof. This was protocol, after all. Taking a deep, ragged breath, the general racked his brain for detail, something private between him and his boss. Something that no one else could know. “Three years ago,” he began, his voice hoarse, “you gave me the order to neutralize the rogue scientist, Dr. Zheng, in the western outpost. But instead, I convinced you to let him live… because we needed his research. You trusted me, and we covered it up, saying the mission was a success.” There was a long silence on the other end of the line. The general’s vision was starting to go dark around the edges, his body on the verge of shutting down completely. He could barely hold the phone to his ear anymore, his strength fading rapidly. Then, finally, his superior spoke. “I need more proof.” The general wanted to curse, but he could hold back and say, “Sir it’s a truly important matter, you see Dr. Mei and Dr. Pan-” But before he could finish, the other end suddenly said coldly, “Who are you? You know so much about the general and me…” “Sir HQ! It’s me! What I can say to make you sure I am indeed General Yi!” The general was truly desperate. “Really? Imposter nowadays are truly smart. Fine. Then tell me about Jake’s past.”
