For the next month, I can cast Universal Comprehension on you twice a day, free of charge,” Mitt added with a clean smile. “Her Majesty the Goddess has decreed that we are to aid you however we can.” “And after a month?” Glory’s Light caught the time limit instantly. “After that, each casting will cost one Silver Puck.” Glory’s Light blinked. He knew from the official site that Gold, Silver, and Copper Pucks were the currencies used in the game, but he had no idea if a Silver Puck was a lot or a little. “Lord Mitt, is there anything I can do to assist you?” He had clearly entered full-on player mode. If you want to level up, get stronger, and earn money. What’s better than taking on quests? Mitt shook his head. “Glory’s Light, you’re still too weak. Where the hell do I go from here?” When Glory’s Light finally stood on the main street of Green City, the dazzling spectacle before him made him momentarily forget his goals. He stared wide-eyed, greedily drinking in the view around him. The city before him was built in full medieval European style. The buildings on either side of the street mostly had steeply pitched spires, and many rooftops bore carved statues of dragons or angels. Down below, semicircular windows shimmered with stained glass in vibrant hues. The walls along the street were covered with vivid, colorful murals. There was a rich, ancient flavor to it all. This was culture. True culture, accumulated only through the slow passage of time. Glory’s Light was filled with excitement, his eyes overwhelmed by the details around him. On the wide bluestone streets, peasants clad in rough gray linen moved with caution, their eyes lifeless and dull. Only when they saw nobles or mercenaries bearing weapons did any emotion flicker across their faces, and it was always fear. Warriors clad in gray leather armor swaggered past street corners, heads held high in arrogant pride. Shopkeepers and passing peasants alike watched them with wary glances. Nobles riding tall horses were dressed in lavish attire, robes embroidered with golden and silver threads, half-sheer sleeves and elegant cravats, every detail screamed noble heritage. Each scene was filled with the exotic flavor of another world. Sunlight seared his skin, and a pungent odor of sewage clung to the air. All these sensations made Glory’s Light’s face light up in utter exhilaration. “Holy crap, this is a real virtual game. Everything else before this? Trash. No, this is a whole other world!” After ogling everything around him for a long while, Glory’s Light finally pulled his gaze back in and suddenly his face dropped. He realized he had absolutely no idea what to do next. This was a truly open world. And for someone used to games that bombarded you with tutorial quests from minute one, this left him completely lost. Just then, he overheard two peasants dressed in short gray shirts and sun-darkened skin whispering nearby. “Did you hear? The Crimson Mage Tower is recruiting apprentices again. Maybe you should let your kid go try?” “Man, I’m jealous. I heard mage apprentices get twenty Silver Pucks a month!” The dazed Glory’s Light perked up like a drowning man spotting a lifeboat. Beaming, he rushed over and interrupted their conversation. “Excuse me, do you know where the Crimson Mage Tower is?” The two men jumped at the sudden interruption, but when they saw the ragged young man looked like just another peasant, their wariness turned into smug pride. “New refugee?” Refugee? Glory’s Light almost exploded, does this handsome face look like a refugee to you?? But seeing the arms on these two were thicker than his thighs, he wisely decided not to press the issue. “No, I’m an adventurer from another world. Do you know where I can find the Crimson Mage Tower that’s recruiting apprentices?” Adventurer from another world? The two exchanged looks of derision. Doesn’t even know where the Crimson Mage Tower is? I surrender!” “Daddy, I’m sorry...” After being dragged into an alley and thoroughly “disciplined,” Glory’s Light barely escaped with his life from the hands of two random peasant NPCs. As he limped away, every inch of him screaming in pain, Glory’s Light was struck by an overwhelming despair. What kind of bullshit game is this?! I’m a freakin’ PLAYER, and I couldn’t even beat two rando peasants?! Just as he was crawling out of the alleyway, he overheard another conversation nearby. “See that tower? That’s the Crimson Mage Tower. Tsk tsk, they’ve been recruiting a lot of apprentices lately. Maybe you should let your kid try.” “Heh, Jelley, you didn’t hear? My boy got picked just yesterday.” “Praise the Goddess, that’s amazing luck.” Glory’s Light’s eyes lit up instantly. I will have my revenge!! Those two bastards, just you wait, I’ll show you what Grandpa can do! He whipped his head toward a tall crimson tower three streets away, twenty blades high, with an exterior like burnished blood. That’s the Crimson Mage Tower where they’re recruiting mage apprentices? Priest Mitt had said he had some talent for spellcasting. And according to the official site, Mages were the top-ranked class in Glory. “I will become a Mage... and I will have my revenge!” Bloodied and bruised, Glory’s Light, with panda eyes and a shredded shirt, charged toward the crimson tower like a madman.
