"Old Ancestor," Wen Maixue sat next to an elderly person, who was covered by an electric heating blanket from the waist down, squinting while puffing on an old-fashioned cigarette holder. "I don’t understand why you made me agree to send that dress over. It’s clear that he’s being unreasonable. I..."
Wen Maixue seldom lost her temper. Her experiences had made her more mature and emotionally restrained than her peers.
"Maixue, haven’t I taught you, to control a man you need to be both firm and yielding? The way you are acting now, you’re no different than the likes of Su Ziceng, both not of high society." The Old Master Wen hardly managed the family affairs anymore, most of which were now in the hands of the younger generation. Wen Maixue was personally groomed by him. Although she wasn’t the best, she was presently the most suited for the job.
"A woman’s every smile and frown should stop just at the right point, even your jealousy should be controlled to make a man feel like you care about him but not only about him. You used this quite well, even on that chubby boy from Qiu Family. Why is it that with him, you keep failing?"
"Grandfather, I just can’t manage it with him," Wen Maixue said softly and dejectedly.
"That matter back then is still affecting you, huh," Old Master Wen opened his eyes, shook his smoking pipe and ashes fell to the ground, tarnishing the clean blanket, and exposing one’s most unseemly side. After all, Maixue could never compare to... her.
"I... it’s my fault the family ended up like this," Wen Maixue couldn’t hold back her emotions, and her eyes reddened.
"What are you crying for? Your sister would never be like you, crying at the drop of a hat," Old Master Wen knocked his smoking pipe, sparking a few embers that burned his beard.
"I’m not as good as my sister, she’s always been stronger than me," Wen Maixue finally lost her composure. Everyone thought she was the pampered princess in the Wen Mansion, yet no one knew that her status today came at the expense of her own elder sister.
"No one could have foreseen what happened back then, just like no one would have expected Su Qingzhang, a penniless boy, to have his wealth today," Old Master Wen snorted and said, "If it weren’t for the Qiao Family back then, the Su Family wouldn’t be where they are today."
Qiao Family was one of the prominent families in Mo City, although not as wealthy as the Wens, they were a force to be reckoned with at that time. It was said that when the only daughter of the Qiao Family, Qiao Chu, got married, she brought dowries consisting of antiques passed down from the older generations.
"Miss, there are visitors," the butler of the Wen family came in, informing.
Hearing this call, Wen Maixue immediately shed her previous timid demeanor, reined in her emotions, and assumed the visage of a demure lady: "It must be him."
Wen Maixue quickly arranged her appearance and sat upright next to Old Lady Wen, regaining the composure befitting the mistress of the Wen family.
"Old Master Wen, it’s only the beginning of the year, and my craving for wine has kicked in," Shang Yin, a tall figure, entered the hall of the Wen family.
The mansion of the Wen family, due to Old Master Wen’s nostalgia, was furnished with antique-style furniture. The arrival of Shang Yin and the man behind him immediately infused the slightly outdated mansion with a vibrant energy.
"Pello, Mr. Shang, you’re here. Please sit down. My old ears have been listening to my granddaughter’s nagging all day," Old Master Wen dropped his previously sharp tone, adopting a generous one fitting for an elder welcoming a younger person.
His gaze flitted between Pello and Shang Yin. The two men in front of him, one being reserved and the other unrestrained, should technically be at odds with each other. Yet, who could guess that it was their arrival that would lead to earth-shaking changes in Mo City? All he could do was ensure that the Wen family survived the storm-like changes.
Shang Yin didn’t immediately sit down, but only after seeing Pello take his seat did he sit down himself.
No sooner had he sat down that Shang Yin began shaking his leg, a carefree gesture that clearly showed no regard for Old Master Wen, "I heard, the Eldest Lady Wen bought back the wine that she sold."
Because of certain reasons, Shang Yin and Pello did not personally attend the auction, but through extensive media coverage, they were well aware of everything that happened in the Subi Auction House.
Seeing Shang Yin’s demeanor, Wen Maixue couldn’t help but get furious, "You really can’t teach an old dog new tricks, Shang Yin, don’t think you can extort my grandfather when I’m not around."
"I thought after the last incident, Old Master Wen’s heart would have become strong enough not to fear any extortion," Shang Yin showed no gripe about Su Ziceng’s actions, to think that a girl like that could come up with such a scheme, outsmarting even the shrewd Wen Maixue.
"I really have to thank Mr. Shang for his care in the early years, my old heart indeed turned out to be stronger than most," Old Master Wen signaled Wen Maixue to stay quiet, "I heard the wine shop of that little girl from the Su family, you have a stake in it too."
"I just casually put in a hand, only contributing some worthless water, unlike some people, silent on the surface but investing both money and effort behind the scenes," Shang Yin deliberately provoked Wen Maixue; while speaking, he glanced at Pello’s face and only upon receiving a warning glance did he touch his nose, stand up, take a bottle of wine from the Wen family’s cabinet, and start drinking by himself.
"I’m here today to discuss this year’s curriculum setup at Kelly Women’s College with Old Master Wen. I would like to recommend a teacher for Kelly," Pello did not elaborate further but directly stated the purpose of today’s visit. (To be continued.
